To see the WordPress version currently running on your site, sign in to the dashboard and open Tools > Site Health > Info. Expand the WordPress section and read the Version value. WordPress.org documents this as the version currently in use.
Check the installed version in Site Health
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Tools > Site Health > Info.
- Expand the WordPress section.
- Find Version; that value identifies the version currently in use. WordPress.org’s Site Health screen documentation describes this dashboard location and field.
This screen reports information about the site; it is not where WordPress directs you to install a core upgrade.
Check separately whether an update is available
Open Dashboard > Updates to check for an available WordPress core upgrade. The Updates screen provides the upgrade link when one is available and indicates when no upgrade is available. See WordPress.org’s Dashboard Updates screen documentation.
The two screens answer different questions: Site Health shows the exact installed version; Updates checks whether WordPress offers a newer core version. You do not need to start an update just to find your version. If you decide to update, first follow your site’s backup and compatibility process.

If you cannot access the dashboard
Ask the site administrator or hosting provider to check the version. An administrator with server or filesystem access may also inspect WordPress core files; WordPress.org release documentation references /wp-includes/version.php, but does not provide a complete version-check procedure for that route. See the WordPress 4.6.30 release page for the file reference. File inspection is a technical alternative, not the simplest route for most site owners.
Do not treat a public page, its source code, generator metadata, or a website-scanner result as a definitive way to identify the installed version. The official documentation cited here does not establish a reliable public-site detection method.

Compare your version with current releases
For a dated comparison, consult WordPress.org’s WordPress Versions list. The page reviewed on September 23, 2026 listed WordPress 7.1.2 as released September 22, 2026. Release information changes, so check the live list rather than relying on that example as current indefinitely.
