The reliable check is on your primary phone: open WhatsApp and review Linked Devices. Every browser, desktop app or other companion device shown there is linked to your account. Select any device and tap Log Out to disconnect it remotely. The current multi-device system means your phone does not have to stay continuously online for a linked device to remain usable.
Use the official WhatsApp Help Center and Meta’s multi-device explanation as references if menu wording differs in your release.
Check WhatsApp Web activity on an iPhone
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Linked Devices.
- Review every browser, computer or companion device listed.
- Tap a device you do not want connected, then tap Log Out and confirm if prompted.
Labels can vary slightly by WhatsApp version, language and account state, but Linked Devices is the relevant account-level control. The procedure is documented through WhatsApp’s Help Center.
Check WhatsApp Web activity on Android
- Open WhatsApp from the Chats screen.
- Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Linked devices.
- Review the sessions shown.
- Tap an unwanted device and choose Log out.
Android capitalization and exact menu placement can change between releases, but the three-dot menu is the normal route to the linked-device list.

What the Linked Devices list tells you
A listed entry means that a browser, WhatsApp Desktop installation or another companion device is authorized to use your account. Depending on the release, WhatsApp may show a device category, operating system, browser or a last-active indication. A recent activity time means the session was used or synchronized around that time; it does not prove that somebody is looking at the screen at this exact moment.
This is different from a contact’s online indicator. A contact being online says nothing about whether your own account has an active Web session.

How to judge whether a device is yours
- Compare the device category or operating system with your laptop, work computer or phone.
- Check the browser or desktop-app description, if one is shown.
- Compare the last-active time with when you used that computer.
- Consider whether the apparent location or network is plausible, but do not treat it as exact. IP-based locations can be distorted by VPNs, proxies, Tor, corporate networks and mobile routing; Security in-a-Box explains this limitation.
A duplicate-looking entry is not automatically evidence of hacking. Multiple browsers, a browser plus the desktop app, or a re-linked session can create entries that look unfamiliar. If you cannot explain an entry, logging it out is the safest reversible response.

Log out of WhatsApp Web remotely
- Open Linked Devices on your phone.
- Select the browser or computer session.
- Tap Log Out.
Remote logout disconnects that companion session without access to the computer. Close the browser tab as well if you can, but do not rely on closing a tab: the authorization can remain until the session is logged out or otherwise invalidated. Remove every unfamiliar or unused entry, not just the first one you notice. WhatsApp’s multi-device documentation describes viewing linked devices and logging them out remotely: Meta Engineering.

Does a listed device mean someone is reading your messages?
No. It confirms that the device has account access, or had recent activity, not that a person is currently reading a chat. The device could be your own laptop, an old work computer, a family computer or a desktop installation you forgot to remove. An unexplained device should nevertheless be treated as unauthorized until you identify it and log it out.
Linking normally requires an action from the primary phone, such as scanning a QR code or completing an approved linking flow. A linked session can therefore indicate that somebody had access to your unlocked phone at some point, but the list alone cannot show what was viewed previously.

What if WhatsApp Web is open but no device appears?
The phone’s Linked Devices list is the account-level source of truth, while a computer only shows that browser’s local state. An apparently open page may be stale, logged into a different account or already unauthenticated.
- Refresh the WhatsApp Web page.
- Check whether it now shows the QR-code or phone-number login screen. That indicates the browser is not authenticated.
- Close and reopen the browser.
- Check Linked Devices again on the phone.
- Update WhatsApp and the browser if the discrepancy continues.
- Log out all listed sessions and relink only the computer you trust.
Browser cookies or local storage may have been cleared, an incognito session may have ended, or the session may have expired. Do not infer security from a locked screen or inactive tab alone.

What if no linked devices are listed?
An empty list means no currently listed companion devices are visible at the time you checked. Possible explanations include a session that was never linked, was already logged out or removed remotely, a different WhatsApp account or phone number, an app that has not refreshed, or a private browsing session that has ended. It does not prove the account was never accessed.
Secure the account after finding an unknown device
- Log out the unknown entry immediately.
- Review the phone’s screen lock and biometric settings, and change them if another person may know or have used them.
- Enable WhatsApp two-step verification if it is not already enabled. See WhatsApp’s instructions at How to manage two-step verification settings.
- Look for unexpected verification-code notifications or SMS messages.
- Update WhatsApp and the phone’s operating system.
- Consider who had temporary access to the unlocked phone and whether other accounts on it need protection.
- If you suspect takeover rather than an abandoned Web session, re-register your phone number through WhatsApp’s official recovery guidance at WhatsApp Security.
Two-step verification strengthens future account protection, but it does not remove existing linked devices; log those out separately. WhatsApp says it uses identity checks when it detects suspicious or unauthorized takeover attempts.
Using WhatsApp on a shared or public computer
- After finishing, log out from Linked Devices on your phone.
- Never leave your phone unlocked while linking a computer.
- Avoid opening sensitive chats on an untrusted computer.
- Do not save passwords or permit another person to use the browser profile.
- Before scanning a QR code, verify that the address is the official https://web.whatsapp.com/ domain.
- If the computer is gone, remove its session remotely from the phone.
WhatsApp Web versus WhatsApp Desktop
The same Linked Devices screen covers both browser sessions and installed WhatsApp Desktop apps on Windows or macOS. A desktop entry is not exempt from the security check: review its activity and log it out if you no longer trust or use that computer.
Can WhatsApp Web work while the phone is offline?
Modern multi-device support was designed so linked companions can operate without the phone remaining continuously connected. The phone remains the primary account-management device, and individual features can still be affected by WhatsApp versions, connectivity, outages or account transitions. The older rule that WhatsApp Web always stops when the phone loses connection is therefore outdated; see Meta’s technical explanation.
