There is no single reliable visual trick that proves an image on a website was made by AI. Check the original file for signed Content Credentials, inspect EXIF and IPTC metadata, search for earlier versions with Google Lens or Google’s “About this image,” and use supported provenance checks such as Gemini’s SynthID analysis or OpenAI’s verifier. Then assess visual details as corroborating clues—not as a verdict. A missing credential does not prove a human took the picture, and a signed history cannot prove that the scene shown is true.
Use several checks, not one AI detector
Image verification is best treated as a provenance investigation. Different methods answer different questions: a credential may describe who created or edited a file; metadata may record camera or software details; reverse image search can reveal where the picture appeared before; and visual inspection can flag inconsistencies. None of these, alone, establishes every fact about an image.
- Provenance: Is there a signed record describing an image’s origin or edits?
- Metadata: Does the file contain camera, capture, or declared-source fields?
- Context and reuse: Has the image appeared elsewhere, and what do earlier pages say?
- Pixel clues: Are there visual inconsistencies that merit closer checking?
Keep the result qualified: “The original file contains a valid credential stating X” is more precise than “This picture is definitely real.” Google explicitly cautions that Content Credentials do not establish that a file is definitely AI-generated, and says the viewer must judge whether the credential’s signer is trustworthy (Google Gemini Help; Google Cloud).
Follow this verification workflow
- Save the best available version. Use the image’s original download or source file if the site provides one. A screenshot, crop, or re-export may remove metadata or interfere with provenance checks. OpenAI advises avoiding cropping or format conversion when checking supported provenance signals (OpenAI’s C2PA guidance).
- Look for Content Credentials. Open the file in a C2PA-compatible viewer and inspect any available creator, device, application, and editing history. Check that the record is valid and identify who signed it; a signature authenticates the record’s association with its signer, not the truth of every claim in the image.
- Inspect EXIF and IPTC fields. EXIF may show a camera model, capture date, or settings. For publisher-declared AI media, Google recommends the IPTC value
DigitalSourceType=TrainedAlgorithmicMedia(Google’s image metadata guidance). Treat ordinary metadata as clues: it can be edited, omitted, or stripped. - Reverse-search the image. Use Google Lens or Google Search’s “About this image” to look for earlier appearances, related pages, and context. An older appearance may show that a site reused an image or misrepresented when it was made; search results do not by themselves prove AI generation (Google About this image; Google Lens).
- Try supported provenance checks. Gemini can interpret compatible Content Credentials and Google’s SynthID signals. OpenAI’s verifier may report C2PA metadata, SynthID, or no supported signal; follow its file guidance and preserve the original where possible (Gemini Help; OpenAI Verify guidance).
- Inspect pixels for corroboration. Look closely at hands, teeth, small text, reflections, shadows, lighting, background details, and repeated patterns. Google notes that errors in small details, inconsistent light or shadows, and unnatural repetition can be clues (Google’s guidance). These are not reliable standalone tests.
- Write down what each check establishes. Separate observed facts from inferences: for example, “no credential was found in this downloaded copy” rather than “the image is human-made.” Note if a check was unavailable or the file had been recompressed.
What the main methods can—and cannot—tell you
| Method | What it can reveal | Original file needed? | Cryptographically signed? | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C2PA Content Credentials | Signed provenance information, such as creator or editing history | Best results depend on a copy retaining its credential | Yes, when a valid signed credential is present | It describes recorded history; it does not prove the depicted event is true or that the signer is trustworthy |
| EXIF and IPTC metadata | Camera/capture details and declared source labels, including the recommended AI media IPTC field | Prefer the original or highest-quality download | No, not inherently | Fields can be missing, changed, or stripped |
| Google Lens / “About this image” | Earlier appearances, related pages, and context | No; a usable image copy is enough to search | No | Finds context or reuse, not an authoritative AI-generation verdict |
| Gemini / SynthID checks | Supported Google credentials or watermark signals | Use a supported image and the best copy available | Depends on signal; SynthID is a provenance watermark, not a general signed event record | Coverage is limited to supported signals and content |
| OpenAI verifier | Supported C2PA metadata, SynthID, or absence of a supported signal | Preserve the original; cropping or conversion can interfere | Can detect signed C2PA metadata when present | “No supported signal” does not mean “not AI-generated” |
| Visual inspection | Possible image-generation artifacts or inconsistencies | No, though a larger, clearer image helps inspection | No | Artifacts are clues, not proof; real images can also look unusual |
Understand Content Credentials, SynthID, and metadata
C2PA Content Credentials
Content Credentials are a C2PA-based, cryptographically signed provenance record that can describe creation and editing actions. A valid credential is stronger evidence about the recorded history than an editable text field, but it is not a universal AI detector. It does not tell you whether the image depicts a genuine event, nor does a signature alone establish that the signer is a reliable source. Google states that Content Credentials do not tell viewers an image is definitely AI-generated (Google Gemini Help).

SynthID
SynthID is a watermark/provenance signal used by Google AI systems. Google’s Gemini guidance describes checks for supported signals, and OpenAI’s verifier guidance also refers to SynthID for supported content. It is not a universal check for every AI model or every image. A negative result means only that the tool did not identify a supported signal under that check—not that a human camera made the picture (Gemini Help; OpenAI guidance).
EXIF and IPTC
EXIF fields can include camera and capture information. IPTC fields can carry publisher-declared source information; Google recommends DigitalSourceType=TrainedAlgorithmicMedia for AI-generated images in its image metadata guidance (Google Search documentation). These labels are useful when present, but they are conventional metadata rather than an inherently signed proof. Their absence is inconclusive.

Reverse search and visual clues
Reverse search asks where else the image or similar versions appear. It can expose reuse, chronology, and contextual inconsistencies, but not settle how the image was generated. Visual clues may help decide what to investigate next. They should not be turned into a verdict: image details can be distorted by compression, editing, resolution, or ordinary photographic conditions.
How to inspect an image shown on a website
A page’s displayed image may be a resized or recompressed rendition, not the original asset. Start with the clearest original available from the site or its linked source. If you must save from the page, use the browser’s image context menu or open the image in a new tab and save that file; avoid taking a screenshot as your only copy. Then run the checks above on the file you actually have and report that limitation.

For a page you need to preserve for later comparison, a screenshot can document what the website displayed at a particular moment, but it is not a substitute for the underlying image file or its metadata. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it can capture a page, but a screenshot should be treated as a record of page appearance, not as the original image provenance.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a page capture as part of documenting an image’s website context, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. It does not replace downloading the source image and checking its provenance. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Troubleshooting: why a check may not work
- No Content Credentials found: The file may never have had a credential, or a screenshot, crop, re-export, or platform conversion may have removed it. Check the original if possible; do not infer a human origin.
- Metadata is empty: Websites often serve optimized copies, and processing can strip EXIF/IPTC fields. Try the source download. A blank metadata panel is not evidence against AI use.
- A verifier reports no supported signal: The image may be unsupported, altered, or made with a system the tool does not check. Interpret this as “no supported signal detected,” not “verified human-made.”
- Reverse search finds nothing: The image may be new, uncommon, or not indexed in a useful way. Lack of matches is not proof of originality or authenticity.
- Visual details look wrong: Check image size and compression before drawing conclusions. Low resolution, sharpening, or resizing can create artifacts; a suspicious detail merits corroboration from other evidence.
- The page image differs from the downloaded file: The site may use responsive variants or transforms. Record the URL and the exact file checked, and avoid claiming that a page screenshot carries the source file’s history.
What to say in a careful assessment
State the evidence and its limits. For example: “The downloaded image contains a valid C2PA credential naming the listed creator and edits; this supports that recorded history, but does not independently verify the scene.” Or: “Google Lens found an earlier version on another page, which suggests reuse; it does not establish whether the image was AI-generated.” If no signal appears, say which file and tools you checked and that the result is inconclusive.

A signed credential is most useful when the original file retains a valid record. Reverse search is strongest for context and reuse history; metadata can disappear; and visual artifacts are corroboration at most. There is no accuracy statistic established by the official guidance cited here for this particular website-image workflow, so avoid assigning a numeric confidence score to these checks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does no Content Credential mean an image was taken by a camera?
No. Credentials can be absent from the start or lost through screenshots, cropping, conversion, or other processing. Their absence is inconclusive.
Can Google Lens prove a picture is AI-generated?
No. Lens and “About this image” can help find earlier appearances and context, but that history is not itself proof of how the image was made.
Can a valid C2PA credential prove that the event in the image happened?
No. It can describe a signed provenance history; it does not independently establish that the depicted scene or claim is true.
