The reliable way to check whether a SIM supports 5G is to ask the carrier that issued it. Use its SIM-compatibility or activation tool, which may check the phone’s IMEI and the SIM’s ICCID, then confirm that your plan, phone, settings and location all support 5G. There is no universal 5G label or SIM-number prefix that works across carriers.
What a 5G-compatible SIM means
A SIM does not create a 5G connection on its own. It identifies your subscription to the carrier, which must accept and provision that SIM for the service you want. “5G-compatible” can mean the SIM is accepted for a carrier’s regular 5G service, supports a particular network architecture such as 5G Standalone, or is correctly provisioned for your specific account, plan and phone. The meaning varies by carrier.
For a working 5G connection, you generally need all of the following:
- A phone model that supports 5G on your carrier’s network.
- A SIM or eSIM the carrier accepts and has activated for your line.
- A plan that includes 5G access.
- 5G coverage where you are, with compatible bands and any required software support.
- Phone settings that allow 5G on the line selected for mobile data.
Apple likewise lists the carrier, plan, coverage, device and SIM setup as separate requirements for 5G. Apple’s 5G support guidance describes the iPhone-specific conditions.

Check compatibility with your carrier first
A carrier’s activation, SIM-compatibility or bring-your-own-device (BYOD) tool is the best starting point. It can assess the phone, SIM and account requirements more reliably than the card’s appearance or an online prefix list.
- Identify the carrier that issued the SIM. For an MVNO, contact the MVNO rather than assuming its host network’s rules apply.
- Open the carrier’s official activation, BYOD or SIM-compatibility page.
- Enter the phone’s IMEI and, if requested, the SIM ID/ICCID. Use the result for the exact phone and SIM you plan to use.
- Confirm with the carrier that your plan includes 5G and the line is activated and provisioned correctly.
- If the tool rejects the SIM, follow the carrier’s replacement-SIM or eSIM activation instructions.
The IMEI identifies the phone and is commonly used for device compatibility checks. The ICCID, often called the SIM ID, identifies a physical SIM. The EID identifies a device’s embedded eSIM hardware; it is not the same as an active carrier profile. The IMSI identifies a subscriber to the network internally and is usually not the number a customer needs to enter.
Verizon’s activation instructions call the SIM ID the ICCID and show how to check it during activation: Verizon device activation. T-Mobile’s checker uses the phone’s IMEI to assess device compatibility: T-Mobile BYOD IMEI checker. An IMEI result alone does not always establish that a particular SIM is compatible, so check both when the carrier offers that option.
Find the ICCID or SIM ID
- iPhone: Try Settings → General → About → Physical SIM. Depending on the model and configuration, the identifier may appear in the cellular or eSIM section instead. Verizon also lists Settings → General → About for iPhone SIM information: Verizon SIM guidance.
- Google Pixel: Try Settings → About phone → SIM status. Labels can differ by model and Android version. See Google’s Pixel SIM and network information.
- Samsung Galaxy: Try Settings → Connections → SIM manager. The ICCID’s exact location varies by model, carrier firmware and One UI version. Verizon lists Settings → Connections → SIM card manager in its guidance linked above.
- Other Android phones: Look under Settings → About phone → Status → SIM status, Network & internet → SIMs, Connections → SIM manager or Mobile network. Android menu names are not standardized; searching Settings for “SIM,” “ICCID” or “SIM status” may be quicker.
Use your phone’s settings as a supporting check
Phone menus can show whether the device offers 5G and whether 5G is enabled for a line. They do not provide a universal certification that the SIM, plan and account are ready.

On iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular or Mobile Data, then Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options.
- Tap Voice & Data and look for 5G Auto or 5G On, rather than LTE-only settings.
Apple says that the Cellular Data Options screen on a compatible iPhone indicates device support for 5G; the screen alone does not prove the SIM, plan or coverage is compatible. Apple’s general requirement is an iPhone 12 or later, a carrier that supports 5G and a 5G plan, subject to regional and carrier limitations. Apple’s guidance covers supported indicators and troubleshooting.
On Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet, Connections or Mobile networks, then select the SIM you use for mobile data.
- Open Preferred network type or Network mode.
- If available, choose a mode such as 5G/LTE/3G/2G, 5G preferred, 5G Auto or NR/LTE. Make sure 5G is not explicitly disabled.
Labels depend on the phone maker, Android version and carrier software. Samsung notes that a compatible device, appropriate SIM, plan and coverage are needed, and that a phone can fall back to LTE when 5G is unavailable: Samsung 5G support.
Test for an active 5G connection
A status-bar label such as 5G, 5G+, 5G UW, 5G UC or 5GA is useful evidence that the phone has connected to a 5G service at that moment. Names and meanings vary by carrier; some distinguish network types or higher-frequency services. The indicator is not a permanent certification of the SIM, nor does it guarantee a particular speed. Apple explains common iPhone indicators at its 5G support page.
For a more useful test, use a known 5G coverage location and an eligible plan, select the correct data SIM, temporarily turn off Wi-Fi, toggle Airplane Mode off and on, and allow the phone to reconnect. Restart if needed, then check the status bar. Keep in mind that the indicator may disappear indoors, while the phone is idle, during congestion or when the carrier dynamically assigns LTE.

Seeing LTE does not prove that the SIM is incompatible. Coverage, plan eligibility, phone bands, carrier provisioning, settings, battery-saving behavior and software can all produce the same result. If the carrier confirms SIM compatibility, test those conditions before replacing the card.
Do you need to replace an older 4G SIM?
Not necessarily. The answer depends on the carrier and sometimes on which 5G service you want. These examples are carrier-specific, not universal rules:
| Carrier | Published guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon | Compatible 4G SIM cards, 5G SIM cards and eSIM profiles can work on Verizon 5G. | Verify the specific SIM and phone through Verizon’s activation or BYOD process. Verizon SIM FAQs |
| AT&T | AT&T says a 5G device may require a 5G SIM for 5G network access. | Check the line and device with AT&T; requirements may depend on device and settings. AT&T SIM-swap guidance and AT&T Prepaid 5G |
| T-Mobile | An existing SIM may support ordinary 5G but not T-Mobile’s 5G Standalone service. | Ask whether your SIM supports the particular network service and whether a phone software update is required. T-Mobile SIM guidance |
| Jio | Jio says its SIMs, including eSIMs, are 5G-ready on its network. | Check Jio plan, device and coverage conditions. Jio True 5G FAQ |
| MVNO or regional carrier | Rules are specific to the provider; a host network’s policy may not apply to the MVNO’s SIM or plan. | Use the issuing provider’s own compatibility and activation guidance. Cellcom, for example, identifies its “Mobile 2.0” SIM as 5G-capable and publishes an ICCID method specifically for its network: Cellcom 5G FAQ. |
You may not need a new SIM, but only your carrier can confirm that for your account, device and network. Do not rely on card size, packaging alone, a prefix list for another carrier or the fact that a SIM looks newer. A nano-SIM is a physical size, not proof of 5G capability.

- Confirm coverage. Try a location where your carrier says 5G is available; indoor reception and local network conditions can affect the connection.
- Check the plan. Confirm with the carrier that the account and line have 5G access.
- Check the setting and data line. Enable a 5G network mode and, on a dual-SIM phone, select the intended line for cellular data.
- Verify the exact phone model. A phone may be 5G-capable but lack the bands or carrier compatibility needed in your region. Confirm it is unlocked if you are bringing it to another carrier.
- Refresh the connection. Toggle Airplane Mode, restart the phone, and install available phone software or carrier settings updates.
- Ask about SIM provisioning. Have the carrier check whether the SIM is active and correctly provisioned. If ordinary 5G works but a specific service does not, ask whether the SIM supports that service, including 5G Standalone where relevant.
- Consider roaming separately. Domestic and international roaming can have different 5G rules. Apple notes that a carrier without 5G roaming support may connect by 4G/LTE or require a local SIM or eSIM for 5G: Apple 5G guidance.
For dual-SIM iPhone 12 models, Apple says using 5G with Dual SIM requires iOS 14.5 or later. Other phones may limit 5G to one active SIM at a time, so a compatible SIM in the inactive data line will not provide the 5G connection.
If the phone connects to 5G but performance is poor, that points to a different problem than SIM compatibility. Signal strength, congestion, network prioritization, indoor reception, device temperature and the carrier’s spectrum all affect speed. AT&T distinguishes 5G and 5G+ and notes that some 5G+ services need specific phone bands, such as n77 or n260: AT&T 5G and 5G+ information.
Choose a replacement SIM or eSIM if the carrier recommends one
A replacement physical SIM is appropriate when the carrier says the existing card is unsupported, damaged or cannot be provisioned. Request it from the carrier that owns the account, not from a marketplace listing for a generic “5G SIM.”
An eSIM can avoid replacing a removable card and may allow a carrier to download a fresh profile, but it is not automatically more 5G-compatible. The phone must support eSIM, the carrier must support that device and account, and the carrier may need to reprovision the line. Moving service to eSIM can deactivate the old physical SIM. See T-Mobile SIM and eSIM support or AT&T eSIM activation. Verizon advises checking eSIM availability on the phone before ordering a replacement physical SIM: Verizon SIM FAQs.
