Capture the same page in the same state, compare the new screenshot with an approved baseline, and inspect the resulting difference. This is visual regression testing: the comparison flags changes for review; it does not decide whether they are bugs. Accept a new baseline only when the change is intentional.
What a visual screenshot check can tell you
A screenshot comparison checks one rendered page state at a time. It can reveal changes in layout, text wrapping, colors, imagery, or other visible details, but the result depends on the conditions used to create both images. A changed pixel is not automatically a defect: dynamic content, animation, or a different viewport can create differences even when the underlying feature is working as intended.
Applitools describes visual testing as a type of regression testing that checks whether previously correct screens have changed unexpectedly. In practice, treat a diff as a review prompt: decide whether the visual change is expected, then either approve the new reference or investigate the page.

Choose a meaningful checkpoint
Decide which page and interface state matter. A landing page after load, a menu after it opens, or a form after validation are different checkpoints. Exercise the UI into the state you want to protect before taking the screenshot.

Keep capture conditions consistent
Use the same browser, viewport, page state, and test data for the baseline and the new run. If one run captures a mobile layout and the other a desktop layout, the resulting difference does not isolate the code change you meant to check. For pages with changing content, arrange stable test data or choose a checkpoint where that content is predictable.
-
Compare with an approved baseline
A baseline is the reference image the team has accepted, not an unquestionable statement of what the page should always look like. Compare the new capture against it and inspect the changed areas in context.
-
Set an appropriate tolerance
Comparison tools can expose thresholds such as maximum differing pixels or a matching threshold. A permissive setting may hide a small but important defect; a strict setting may flag harmless rendering variation. Choose thresholds with the screen’s risk and expected variability in mind, and review failures instead of treating the threshold as proof of correctness.
-
Review and decide
If the change is intended, update the baseline through your team’s review process. If it is unexpected, retain the old baseline while investigating the page, test data, or capture conditions. Do not accept snapshots automatically just to make a failing run pass.

Cover the states and viewports that matter
One screenshot checks only one captured state at one viewport. Add checkpoints for the important responsive layouts and interactive states. The needed coverage depends on the product; there is no universal number of screenshots that guarantees a page is protected.
Use Playwright Test for an in-suite check
If your project already uses Playwright Test, its screenshot assertion is a direct way to compare a page with an expected screenshot. The basic assertion is await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();. Playwright documents waiting for consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the final screenshot with the expectation, which helps avoid capturing an unsettled frame.
In a test, navigate to the page, put it in the state to check, then make the assertion:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png');
});
Replace the local URL and viewport with values appropriate to your application. The first run establishes an expected image where one does not yet exist; inspect that image and commit it as the approved baseline. Later runs compare against the stored expectation. Keep the baseline changes visible in code review so a snapshot update is an intentional decision rather than an unnoticed side effect.

Playwright’s snapshot assertions provide options for tolerances, including a maximum number of differing pixels and a matching threshold. Consult the API version used by your project for the accepted option names and semantics; set a limit only after considering how much visual variation is acceptable for this particular screen.
Choose between local assertions and hosted review
Start with the workflow your team can reliably maintain. Playwright Test is a natural fit when it is already part of your test suite and you want screenshot assertions alongside other tests. Hosted visual-review services may suit teams that want a managed baseline and review workflow or broader responsive and browser coverage. Applitools documents a Playwright integration and review capabilities; Percy documents responsive design support. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent comparative test results.
| Approach | Good fit | Trade-off to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test screenshot assertions | Teams already using Playwright Test that want visual checks in their test workflow. | Expected snapshots and their updates are part of the test and code-review process; configure tolerances and review changes intentionally. |
| Applitools Eyes | Teams evaluating a hosted visual-review workflow and Playwright integration. | It is a vendor-specific service. Verify current plan, security terms, and program details directly before choosing it. |
| Percy | Teams evaluating hosted screenshot review and responsive design testing. | It is a vendor-specific hosted service. Verify current plans and supported workflows directly. |
Compare options based on where screenshots and baselines are stored, how reviewers inspect diffs, how tolerances or ignored regions work, the browser and viewport coverage you need, and how the checks fit into CI. The available product descriptions do not establish a neutral winner for price or performance.
Use ScreenshotNeo when you need a screenshot API
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for approving and comparing visual-regression baselines. It can supply a screenshot for your workflow; you still need a comparison tool or test assertion to decide how it differs from the reference. A one-request capture is useful when you want to obtain an image without setting up a browser locally.

One-call capture with cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL. The request saves the response as a WebP file. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response details.
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Node.js example shows the request; handle and save the returned response body in the way your application expects. For a visual regression suite, store the captured image as the current artifact and pass it to your chosen image comparison workflow. Keep the viewport, page state, and test data aligned with the baseline; an API capture by itself does not establish whether a change is acceptable.
What the API can and cannot do for this workflow
ScreenshotNeo offers PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output, along with options such as full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport settings, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, waiting for a selector or network idle, and hiding selected elements. Those controls can help make a capture fit a test case, but they should be chosen consistently between baseline and current captures. Its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. These functions help capture and inspect pages; they do not replace visual-diff review.
Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. The service lists the same features on every plan, with yearly billing offering two months free.

Troubleshoot noisy or failed visual checks
- The diff is large even though the code change was small. Check whether the viewport, browser, page state, or test data changed. Confirm that the page reached the intended checkpoint before capture.
- Only dynamic regions keep changing. Make test data stable where possible and capture after the relevant content has settled. If your comparison workflow supports excluding regions, use that selectively; excluding too much can conceal a real regression.
- A tiny difference fails every run. Review the diff before increasing tolerance. Determine whether it is harmless rendering variation or a real visual defect, then set a threshold appropriate to the screen.
- A snapshot update makes the test pass but the output looks wrong. Restore the prior baseline and investigate. A passing comparison against an unreviewed new baseline does not demonstrate that the page is correct.
- The screenshot shows the wrong UI state. Ensure the test performs the needed interaction—such as opening a menu or triggering validation—before taking the screenshot.
- An API capture is blank, blocked, or times out. Check the target URL and the response’s page-verdict and billing headers to understand what happened. For a failed load, bot check, or blank page, fix the capture conditions or target-page issue before treating the image as a valid baseline.
Keep the workflow useful in CI
Run visual checks at deliberate checkpoints rather than taking screenshots indiscriminately. Name screenshots by page and state, retain enough context in test output for a reviewer to locate the changed area, and make baseline updates reviewable. When a check fails, distinguish a product defect from changed inputs or an unsettled capture before deciding what to do.
For cost and reliability, account for the total number of page states, viewports, and runs your workflow captures, and verify the current plan and service terms of any hosted provider directly. The documentation cited here does not provide a neutral price or performance comparison among the visual-testing services.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a visual difference always a bug?
No. It is a change for review; it may be intentional or caused by differing capture conditions.
Can an API screenshot alone perform visual regression testing?
No. It supplies an image, but the workflow also needs an approved reference and a comparison step.
