To check for pending Windows 11 updates, open Start → Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates. To verify what is already installed, use Update history; to identify your exact release and build, open Settings → System → About → Windows specifications or run winver.
Check for new Windows 11 updates
- Select Start, then open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If Windows offers an update, select Download & install (or the equivalent button shown).
- Save your work and restart when Windows requests it. Keep a laptop connected to power while downloading or installing.
Download time depends on the update size, connection speed and network settings. Microsoft’s installation guidance is available at Install Windows updates.
See which updates were installed recently
Checking for updates and checking update history answer different questions. To confirm an installation, go to Start → Settings → Windows Update → Update history.

Find your Windows 11 version and OS build
Use Settings
Open Start → Settings → System → About, then read Windows specifications. Record the edition, version and OS build.
Use winver
Search for winver and open the result. The dialog reports the Windows edition, version and build. The build matters when you compare your system with Microsoft’s release notes. Microsoft’s version guidance is documented on its Windows 11 version information page.
Match an update with Microsoft’s release notes
- Open Update history and copy the newest Windows update’s KB number, date and build.
- Open the update-history page for your installed Windows 11 version. Microsoft maintains separate pages for releases such as version 25H2.
- Select the entry with the same KB number and confirm that its version and build match your PC.
- Read Improvements, Known issues and How to get this update.
Do not assume there is one universal “latest Windows 11 update.” Monthly updates and feature releases depend on your Windows version, device compatibility, edition and rollout status. Microsoft can release an update in phases, so a compatible PC may not see it immediately.

What “You’re up to date” means
The message means Windows Update currently has no applicable update ready for this device under its current configuration and rollout status. It does not necessarily mean the PC has the newest Windows 11 feature version released anywhere.

- A feature update may still be in a staged rollout or under a compatibility safeguard hold.
- Your PC may be running a different Windows version from the one discussed in a news report.
- An employer or school may control update timing through management policies.
- Optional drivers, Microsoft Store apps and every announced feature are separate from the standard Windows Update result.

Know which kind of update Windows is offering

Microsoft explains how cumulative updates can incorporate fixes from an earlier preview in its version-specific release notes, such as the March 10, 2026 release entry. Recommended-driver behavior is described in Microsoft’s driver guidance.
If Windows finds nothing but you expect an update
- Check whether updates are paused and whether a restart is pending.
- Confirm that the article or announcement refers to your Windows version and build.
- Allow for phased delivery or a compatibility safeguard hold; do not force-install a feature update solely because it was announced.
- On a work or school PC, ask the administrator because policy may defer or restrict updates.
- Check Update history: the update may already be included in a differently labelled cumulative entry.
- If you are looking for an app update, open Microsoft Store instead; Store apps do not update through Windows Update.

- Restart the PC. A downloaded update may not complete until a restart.
- Check the connection. Resolve Wi-Fi, metered-network or captive-portal issues.
- Check storage. Free space safely. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page cites 16 GB for a 32-bit OS upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS upgrade in that upgrade context; those figures are not a universal requirement for every monthly update.
- Run Microsoft’s troubleshooter. Windows 11 users should start with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If available on your build, use Start → Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run.
- Check services and security software. Confirm the Windows Update service is running. If Microsoft’s guidance points to third-party antivirus or firewall interference, disable it only for diagnosis, use a trusted connection, and re-enable protection immediately.
- Use the error code. Search Microsoft’s specific support guidance for the exact code rather than repeatedly retrying blindly.
Use Microsoft’s full escalation guidance at Troubleshoot problems updating Windows. Do not begin by deleting system folders such as C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution; that is an advanced procedure, not a first-line fix.

- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. When manual installation makes sense
For ordinary monthly updates, Windows Update is the safest and simplest route. If an eligible feature update has not arrived automatically, Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant can help install the latest feature release. It supports x86 and x64 devices, but not ARM-based PCs.
The Microsoft Update Catalog and standalone .msu packages are primarily for experienced users and administrators. Download update files only from Microsoft, never from third-party “driver” or update utilities.
Pause updates or schedule a restart
Pause temporarily
In Settings → Windows Update, choose the pause control and select an end date. Microsoft’s current support page allows pausing for up to 35 days. Pausing is temporary; updates resume when the pause expires. See Pause updates in Windows.
Choose a convenient restart
When Windows offers Schedule the restart, select a suitable time. Configure Active hours in Windows Update to reduce the chance of an automatic restart interrupting work. Scheduling changes timing, not whether the update is ultimately installed.

If an update causes a problem
First restart, check Update history and read the matching Microsoft release notes for known issues. If removal is necessary, open Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates and follow the available controls. Uninstalling is a recovery measure, not routine maintenance; use Microsoft’s instructions at How to uninstall a Windows update.
Windows 11 version caveat
Do not treat every newly announced version as an in-place upgrade for every existing PC. Microsoft’s current information says Windows 11 version 26H1 is intended for new devices with select 2026 silicon and is not offered as an in-place update to earlier Windows 11 devices. Always compare your own version and build with the applicable release-history page.
If a search result sends you to Settings → Update & Security, it is describing Windows 10, not Windows 11. Microsoft ended free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance and security fixes on October 14, 2025; Windows 11 uses the Windows Update section in Settings.

How do I know whether my last Windows 11 update installed correctly?
Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history and check for the update’s KB number and installation date. Then compare the reported OS build with the matching Microsoft release note.

Why does Windows say I’m up to date when a newer update was released?
The update may be staged, compatibility-held, intended for another Windows version, delayed by organization policy, or already included in an installed cumulative update.
Where can I find the KB number?
Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history. Expand the newest relevant category and read the KB identifier beside the installed update.
Can I use Windows Update Assistant on an ARM PC?
No. Microsoft says the Assistant supports x86 and x64 devices, not ARM-based PCs.
