On a supported iPad, go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Apple currently lists only certain newer models for this built-in screen, so if the menu is missing, check your exact model before troubleshooting.
Which iPads have a Battery Health screen?
Apple lists these models as supporting Battery Health in Settings:
- iPad Pro with M4 or M5
- iPad Air with M2, M3 or M4
- iPad mini with A17 Pro
- iPad with A16
Check your model at Settings → General → About → Model Name, then compare it with Apple’s supported-model list. Eligibility depends on the specific model, not simply how new or expensive the iPad is. Apple does not currently list many older models—including M1 iPad Pro models—as supporting this menu.
How to check iPad battery health
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Health.
On supported models, the screen can show Maximum Capacity, a battery-health status, Cycle Count, Manufacture Date and First Use Date. Some supported combinations of hardware and software may also show an 80% Limit control; that setting manages charging and is not a reading of current battery health. See Apple’s instructions and its 80% Charge Limit guide.

What Maximum Capacity means
Maximum Capacity is an estimate of the battery’s capacity compared with when it was new. For example, 90% indicates the iPad is reporting roughly 90% of its original capacity. It does not predict a specific number of hours: brightness, apps, background activity, cellular signal, temperature and software all affect runtime.
| Reading | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|
| 95–100% | Little apparent capacity loss; it does not guarantee long runtime in every workload. |
| 85–94% | Some wear may be present. Judge it alongside runtime and the iPad’s age and use. |
| Around 80% | Capacity loss may noticeably reduce time between charges. |
| Below 80% or a service recommendation | Consider an official diagnosis, especially if runtime or operation is affected. These are practical guideposts, not Apple diagnostic categories or automatic replacement rules. |
The figure is an estimate and can be recalculated as the iPad gathers information. A small change does not necessarily mean the battery physically lost that exact amount overnight.
What Cycle Count means
A cycle is cumulative use equal to 100% of the battery’s capacity, not necessarily one charge from empty to full. For example, using 40% one day and 60% later adds about one cycle.

That is a design target, not a guarantee that every battery will reach exactly 80% at exactly 1,000 cycles or a hard failure threshold. Wear also depends on age, heat, charging conditions and use. Manufacture Date and First Use Date help put cycle count and capacity in context, particularly when evaluating a used iPad. A low cycle count alone does not prove that a battery is healthy.
If Battery Health is missing
Confirm the exact model
Start at Settings → General → About → Model Name. If the model is not on Apple’s supported list, a missing Battery Health menu is expected; repeatedly restarting or resetting the iPad will not add the feature to an unsupported model.
Install the latest compatible iPadOS
Software labels and availability can change, so install the latest iPadOS version your iPad supports. An update does not guarantee that an older, unlisted model will gain the menu.
Review battery usage separately
Open Settings → Battery to review battery use by day, app and system activity. Apple’s current guide also describes Settings → Battery → View All Battery Usage. These charts can help identify a power-hungry app, background activity, heavy screen use, notifications or poor cellular coverage, but they do not report maximum capacity. A healthy battery can drain quickly under heavy use, and a degraded one may seem adequate during light use. See Apple’s battery-usage guide.

Consider a computer-based estimate for an older iPad
iMazing advertises battery-health and lifespan information for iPads on macOS and Windows. It requires connecting the iPad to a computer and granting device access. Its reading is a third-party diagnostic estimate, not Apple’s consumer-facing Battery Health screen or a substitute for Apple’s service diagnosis. See iMazing’s product page and battery-health guide. Avoid utilities that ask you to jailbreak, disable security protections, install questionable profiles or upload personal device data.
Allow for a temporarily unavailable reading
Apple says Maximum Capacity may be temporarily unavailable after the iPad has remained connected to power for a prolonged period. Disconnect it and allow it to complete additional full cycles; Apple says the field may then become available. This is a specific information-refresh case, not a repair method. See Apple’s guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to seek battery service
Consider a professional diagnosis if runtime no longer meets your needs, the iPad shuts down unexpectedly, charging is erratic, or the Battery Health screen recommends service. A normal-looking percentage does not rule out every battery or power-related problem. Apple’s technical status documentation includes values such as normal, service-recommended, non-genuine, unknown and unsupported; the consumer screen may not show every state in that exact wording. See Apple’s battery-health status definitions.
For a visibly swollen or damaged iPad, a lifting screen, unusual heat or other physical warning signs, stop using and charging it and arrange professional service. Do not rely on a software percentage to decide whether a physically damaged battery is safe. Apple directs users to professional battery service and recycling.

Apple’s iPad repair process can provide an inspection and estimate; cost and service options vary by model, region and provider. Apple says AppleCare battery service may be available at no extra charge when capacity falls below 80%, subject to the plan’s terms and eligibility. That coverage condition is distinct from the 80%-after-1,000-cycles design target. Check Apple’s current repair information rather than treating 80% as a universal free-replacement rule. For an older iPad, compare the quoted service cost with the device’s remaining value and replacement cost.
Ways to reduce avoidable battery wear
Use the 80% Charge Limit for devices often left plugged in
Where available, go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health → 80% Limit. It can suit a desk, kiosk or classroom iPad that stays connected to power for long periods, but it trades some immediately available runtime for potentially reduced long-term wear. It is optional, not necessary for every user. Apple says the iPad may occasionally charge to 100% to keep its battery-percentage estimate accurate. See Apple’s instructions.
Avoid excess heat and routine full discharges
Avoid using or charging the iPad in excessive heat, such as leaving it in a hot car. There is no need to routinely drain it to 0% or perform repeated full-charge cycles to “calibrate” or restore the battery; a full discharge does not recover lost capacity. Apple’s battery guidance covers how use and charging conditions affect batteries: apple.com.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChecking a used iPad
When buying a supported model, ask the seller to show the Battery Health screen, including Maximum Capacity, Cycle Count, Manufacture Date and First Use Date, as well as Settings → General → About. On an unsupported model, a claimed health percentage may come from an external tool or guesswork; treat it as an estimate and favor an in-person inspection or a return policy.
