There is no single universal computer-usage history. Use your browser’s History page to find visited websites, Screen Time or family-management tools to review app and device usage, recent-file lists to find opened documents, and operating-system logs to investigate sign-ins, wake-ups, sleep, and shutdowns.
The right method depends on the evidence you need—and most reports cannot prove that someone was actively using the computer every minute it was awake.
First, identify the type of history you need
| You want to know | Check first | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Which websites were visited | Browser history or Google My Activity | It records navigation, not reliable time spent or active attention. |
| Which apps were used and for how long | Mac Screen Time, Microsoft Family Safety, or managed ChromeOS reports | Tracking must usually have been enabled in advance. |
| Which files were opened | Recent files in the relevant application or operating-system file lists | Recent lists can be cleared, limited, or changed by the application. |
| When the computer was signed in, unlocked, awake, or shut down | Windows Event Viewer or equivalent system logs | Events show system activity, not necessarily a person’s active work. |
| Battery-powered usage | Windows Power & battery | Battery drain is not the same as screen time or productive time. |
| A child’s or family member’s activity | Family Safety, Family Link, or Apple Family Sharing | Coverage depends on accounts, devices, browsers, and permissions. |
| Detailed future activity | A consent-based time-tracking or monitoring tool | It generally cannot recover activity from before installation. |
Ordinary browser history is especially easy to misunderstand: it records browsing events, but normally cannot reliably tell you how long a page remained open, whether it was in the foreground, or whether someone was actively reading it. Research on reconstructing browsing activity identifies these gaps as important limitations of browser history (research on browsing-history reconstruction).
How to check usage history on Windows 11 and Windows 10
1. Review Windows Activity history
Windows Activity history is a configurable local record of selected activities. Microsoft says it can include certain apps and services used, files opened, and some website activity. It is not a complete chronological record of everything done on the PC.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Activity history.
- Review Store my activity history on this device.
- Use Clear history only if you want to delete the stored history.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Select Activity history.
- Review the local-storage and account options.
The interface and available options vary by Windows version, account type, browser, privacy settings, and whether Activity history was enabled when the activity occurred. Microsoft also says that sending Activity history to Microsoft was deprecated for supported Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 updates in January 2024, while local storage can still be used. See Microsoft’s current Activity history and privacy documentation.
Windows 10 note: Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. The steps may still apply to an installed Windows 10 system, but it should not be treated as receiving ordinary free security support.
2. Check browser history
If you need a recently visited website, the browser is usually the fastest place to look. History is separate for each browser profile, so confirm that you are viewing the correct Windows account and profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Microsoft Edge: open the browser menu and choose History.
- Google Chrome: open the three-dot menu and choose History.
- Mozilla Firefox: open the application menu and choose History.
Private, InPrivate, or Incognito sessions generally do not remain in the ordinary local browser-history list. However, deleting local history does not necessarily remove records held separately by a Google account, employer, school, router, DNS provider, or monitoring system.
For Edge-specific privacy details, see Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation.
3. Review Microsoft Family Safety activity
For a child or family member, Microsoft Family Safety can report apps, games, screen time, and some web and search activity across supported devices.
- Connect the person’s device and Microsoft account to Microsoft Family Safety.
- Sign in as the family organizer.
- Select the family member.
- Enable Activity reporting for the relevant platform.
- Review Apps, features and games, Web and search, or Screen time.
The important limitation is browser coverage: Microsoft documents web and search reporting when the family member uses Microsoft Edge while signed in. Activity in Chrome, Firefox, or another browser may not appear in that web report. See Microsoft’s Family Safety activity-reporting guide.

- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > System or Windows Logs > Security.
- Filter or search for relevant event sources and event IDs associated with logons, unlocks, sleep, wake, restart, and shutdown.
Event Viewer is an advanced investigative source, not an “hours used” dashboard. Logs may be disabled, incomplete, rotated, or restricted by permissions. A wake or login event proves that the system changed state; it does not prove that a person was actively working. A logged-in session can remain unattended.
Windows forensic investigations may also examine browser databases, shortcut files, file timestamps, and event logs, but these artifacts should be treated as partial evidence rather than a guaranteed reconstruction of continuous human activity. See Microsoft’s Activity history documentation and this Windows forensic-artifact reference.
5. Check battery and power usage
On a supported Windows laptop, open Settings > System > Power & battery. Depending on the device and Windows version, you may see battery or app-level usage information.

Use this as an approximate clue only. Battery consumption can come from background processes, sleep behavior, charging, video playback, or power settings. Desktop PCs generally do not offer an equivalent battery-based report.
How to check usage history on a Mac
Use Screen Time
macOS Screen Time can show app usage, website activity, notifications, pickups, and device statistics—but only after its reporting feature has been enabled.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Screen Time.
- Turn on App & Website Activity if it is disabled.
- Select App & Website Activity.
- Choose the relevant day or week.
- Select the individual Mac or choose All Devices.
- Switch between apps, categories, websites, and the available usage views.
Apple’s Screen Time guide explains the available reports. Apple also documents viewing App & Website Activity by date, week, device, app, or category (viewing activity on Mac).
Choose the individual Mac when you need computer-only results. If Share across devices is enabled, the report can combine activity from multiple Apple devices. Family Sharing can allow a parent or guardian to view a family member’s reports when configured appropriately.

Screen Time is not a forensic record of every keyboard, mouse, or file action. It reports device and app usage, which may include an app left open while nobody is present. It cannot reliably distinguish productive work from idle use.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Turning off App & Website Activity stops future tracking and removes access to related Screen Time reports and limits. Apple documents this behavior in its Screen Time settings guide.
Check browser history separately
For a specific website visit, use the browser’s own history:
- Safari: choose History > Show All History.
- Chrome or Firefox: open the browser’s History view.
Screen Time is better for approximate app or website duration; browser history is better for identifying individual navigation records. Neither is a perfect record of active human attention.
How to check usage history on a Chromebook
Personal Chromebook
On a personal Chromebook, start with Chrome history. You can also check Google My Activity if Web & App Activity, Chrome-history synchronization, and related account controls were enabled.
My Activity is not identical to local Chrome history. Its contents depend on the signed-in Google account, device synchronization, Google-service activity, retention settings, and whether the relevant controls were enabled.
Child account with Family Link
Google Family Link can supervise a child’s app usage and manage website access on a Chromebook. Its available features and supported platforms differ, so it should not be assumed to provide the same reports on Windows, Mac, Linux, and ChromeOS. See Google’s Family Link Chromebook documentation.
School- or work-managed Chromebook
A managed Chromebook may provide reports to its administrator rather than to the person using it. Google’s ChromeOS administration documentation says device-state reporting can show recent activity and app usage for managed devices. The documented reporting windows include recent device activity for up to 30 days and app usage for up to 28 days, subject to administrator configuration and product availability (ChromeOS managed-device reporting).
To check whether Chrome is managed:
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and look for Managed by your organization at the bottom.
- Alternatively, enter
chrome://managementin the address bar.
Google explains that managed browsers can have administrator-installed extensions, restrictions, and reporting. A managed Chromebook administrator may also install apps, restrict features, and monitor activity (Chrome management; managed Chromebook help).

Browser history versus Google account activity
Local browser history and Google My Activity are separate sources.
Browser history may show:
- Visited URLs or page titles.
- Search pages and navigation records.
- Visit timestamps, depending on the browser’s view.
- Records associated with a particular browser profile.
It usually cannot reliably show:
- How long someone actively read a page.
- Whether a page was in the foreground.
- Whether the user was physically present.
- What happened during private browsing.
- Activity after history was cleared.
- Activity in another browser, account, or profile.
Google My Activity may include Chrome history and activity from sites, apps, and devices that use Google services when the relevant setting is enabled. It therefore may contain records not found in one computer’s local browser history, but it is not a guaranteed copy of everything done in Chrome. Check Google’s Web & App Activity documentation.
What usage reports can—and cannot—prove
Device uptime is not active use
A computer can be awake, logged in, playing media, displaying a browser tab, or running a background task while unattended. Prefer precise terms such as reported device usage, app usage, or session duration rather than calling every recorded minute “productive time.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdvance setup matters
Screen Time, Family Safety, Family Link, and enterprise reports generally cannot recreate a complete history that was never collected. If a feature was disabled, the wrong account was used, or the activity happened before setup, the report may be empty or incomplete.
Accounts and profiles matter
Check the correct Windows user, Mac family member, Google account, browser profile, guest session, and work or school account. A history that appears empty may simply belong to a different profile.
Private browsing is not the same as invisible activity
Private browsing generally prevents ordinary local browser-history entries, but it does not guarantee that no other system retained information. Google account activity, DNS services, routers, employer or school systems, and authorized monitoring tools are separate sources.
If no history appears
- Confirm that you are signed in to the correct operating-system and online account.
- Check every relevant browser profile, not just the default profile.
- Confirm that Activity history, Screen Time, Family Safety, Family Link, or management reporting was enabled at the time.
- Check whether the device or browser is managed by a school or employer.
- Consider whether history was cleared or a private window was used.
- Look at another evidence source, such as recent files, account activity, power events, or security logs.
- For future tracking, configure a transparent, consent-based tool before the activity occurs.
Do not assume that deleted history can always be recovered, or that a monitoring application can reconstruct old activity. A tool installed today normally records future activity only.
Privacy, consent, and managed devices
Checking your own computer is different from monitoring a child, employee, student, or another adult. Family and workplace tools require appropriate account permissions and should be used transparently and lawfully. Do not try to bypass administrator controls or install covert monitoring software on someone else’s device.
For workplace reporting, administrator-managed products can be more comprehensive than consumer tools, but they also create greater privacy, security, compliance, and policy obligations. Users may not be able to view the reports collected about them.
