Most Samsung Galaxy phones do not show an Apple-style battery-health percentage in Settings. Samsung’s supported check is Samsung Members’ phone diagnostic, which normally reports Normal, Weak, or Bad. An actual percentage requires a third-party estimate, such as AccuBattery, or a professional service diagnostic.
Charge percentage is not battery health
These terms describe different things:

| Battery condition | Samsung’s diagnostic classification, such as Normal, Weak, or Bad. |
| Capacity estimate | A calculated approximation from a third-party app or service tool. |
| Cycle count | Equivalent full charge cycles; it is not the same as health percentage and is not consistently exposed on Galaxy phones. |
A phone reaching 100% charge only means it reached its current charging limit. It does not prove the cell still holds 100% of its original capacity. Likewise, an 80% or 85% charging-protection limit is a feature setting, not a health reading.
Check Samsung’s official battery condition
- Open Samsung Members.
- Tap Support at the bottom.
- Under Phone diagnostics, choose Get started, Phone diagnostics, or Test all—the label depends on the app version.
- Select Battery status, or run the full test and open the battery result.
Samsung documents this workflow in its Galaxy Battery support guide. Menus vary by Galaxy model, One UI release, country, and Samsung Members version.

Some phones expose the same check through Settings → Battery and device care (or Device care) → Diagnostics → Phone diagnostics → Battery status. This path is not universal; newer Samsung user guides describe Diagnostics under Device care. If it is missing, update Samsung Members and the phone software, restart, and use the Samsung Members route directly.

What Normal, Weak, and Bad mean
Samsung’s published support response describes the results as follows:
- Normal: The available software test detected no battery-performance issue. It does not certify a particular capacity percentage or prove the cell is original.
- Weak: Battery efficiency may have declined with age, use, or environmental conditions. Expect shorter runtime, but troubleshoot drain before assuming replacement is necessary.
- Bad: Battery life has significantly degraded. Samsung recommends contacting a support center for evaluation.
Do not convert these labels into numbers. “Weak” is not automatically 80%, and “Normal” is not automatically 100%. Samsung’s ordinary consumer diagnostic generally does not expose a universal maximum-capacity percentage.
Can you get an approximate percentage?
Yes, but it will be an estimate rather than an official Samsung measurement. AccuBattery and similar Google Play apps compare measured charging data with the phone’s reported design capacity.

- Install the app from the Google Play listing.
- Confirm the phone’s original design capacity; correct incorrect model data if the app allows it.
- Let it monitor several meaningful charging sessions, ideally across a broad range from low charge to near full.
- Compare the measured-capacity estimate with design capacity and watch the trend over time.
One short session is not enough. Estimates can be distorted by charging from an already-high level, an 80–85% protection limit, heat, background activity, charger and cable losses, Android background restrictions, gauge calibration, or a replacement cell with incorrect specifications. Different apps may disagree because they use different assumptions and sampling periods. Treat the number as an indication—not laboratory capacity, a warranty certificate, or Samsung’s service diagnosis.
Troubleshoot drain before replacing hardware
- Open Settings → Battery and device care → Battery and identify unusually demanding apps.
- Review background-use limits and apps installed shortly before the problem began.
- Compare use on 5G, weak signal, high brightness, GPS, gaming, and hotspot; these can increase consumption without a failed battery.
- Install phone and Samsung Members updates, restart, and repeat the diagnostic.
- Try a known-good Samsung-compatible charger and cable.
- Check whether the phone gets hot while idle.
- Use Safe mode temporarily if a third-party app may be responsible.
- Judge runtime over several ordinary days rather than one unusually poor day.
When service or replacement is the right move
Seek Samsung or qualified professional service for unexpected shutdowns despite a substantial displayed charge, rapid percentage drops, severe runtime loss, excessive heat during ordinary use or charging, repeated charging interruptions, or a Samsung result of Bad. Also seek service after liquid or impact damage.
Stop using and charging the phone immediately if the back cover is lifting, the screen is separating, the battery is swollen, or you notice a burning or chemical odor. Do not squeeze, puncture, freeze, open, or repeatedly recharge a suspected damaged battery. Back up important data before service; repair may require a reset.

Samsung’s replacement guidance recommends a service-center check for drastic battery-life reduction and unexpected shutdowns. An authorized center can distinguish a worn cell from a charging-port, board, software, or thermal fault.
Repair options and their trade-offs
- Samsung-authorized repair: Best for swelling, warranty claims, water-resistance concerns, and uncertain hardware faults. Use Samsung’s service locator or repair portal; pricing and availability depend on model, region, warranty, and damage.
- Samsung Care+: The current US plan page says battery repair is subject to diagnostics confirming 79% or less capacity. That is a plan threshold, not Samsung’s universal on-phone health scale; eligibility, fees, and terms vary.
- DIY kits: iFixit lists parts and guides for selected models. Opening a sealed phone requires appropriate tools and skill, can compromise water resistance, and may affect warranty or safety. Never attempt DIY work on a swollen battery.
- Independent repair shops: Compare technician reputation, parts quality, warranty, data handling, and whether the original water-resistant seals can be replaced.
Checking a used Samsung phone
Ask the seller to run Samsung Members diagnostics in front of you. Treat Normal as reassuring, not as proof of a particular percentage or an original battery. Inspect for a lifting back, overheating, unexpected shutdowns, poor runtime, and charging that works only at certain cable angles. Request the exact model number and region, and prefer a return period or warranty over relying on one third-party number.
Common edge cases
- Samsung Members is absent: Install or update it through the supported app store for your region.
- Battery status is missing: Update One UI and Samsung Members, sign in if prompted, restart, and check both menus. Some models or regional builds simply do not expose the test.
- Refurbished phone: Software may not reveal whether the cell was replaced.
- Apps disagree: Compare multi-day trends and physical symptoms, not isolated percentages.
- Post-replacement reading: A reported 100% may reflect reset history or design-capacity assumptions; it is not proof of factory-new capacity.

It is the appropriate first-party screening tool, but it is a condition assessment rather than a laboratory capacity measurement.

Can a swollen battery be recalibrated?
No. Stop charging and seek qualified service immediately; recalibration cannot make a damaged cell safe.
Why do Samsung Members and AccuBattery disagree?
They measure different things: Samsung reports a diagnostic category, while the app estimates capacity from assumptions and sampled charging data.
The Bottom Line
Run Samsung Members first. If it says Normal, monitor real-world runtime; if it says Weak, troubleshoot and watch the trend; if it says Bad—or the phone is swollen, hot, or shutting down—back up your data and arrange professional service. Use third-party percentages only as approximate supporting evidence.
