Use adb shell wm size to read Android’s reported width and height in pixels, and adb shell wm density to read logical density. Start with adb devices to confirm the device is connected:
adb devices
adb shell wm size
adb shell wm densityThese values describe Android’s current logical display configuration, not necessarily the panel’s physical diagonal in inches. Use adb shell dumpsys display for additional display-service details, and record any override, rotation, display ID, and multi-window state when you need reproducible results.
What the ADB commands actually measure
Android exposes several different ideas of “screen size.” Keeping them separate prevents incorrect device inventories and bad layout tests.
- Reported resolution: the width-by-height pixel configuration returned by
wm size. - Logical density: the scaling value returned by
wm density, used when Android maps density-independent pixels to physical pixels. - Display-service state: records such as display IDs, modes, overrides, and other diagnostics available from
dumpsys display. - Physical diagonal: the panel’s real measurement in inches. ADB’s resolution and density output does not uniquely determine this value.
Android can adjust the reported display area for system decorations, scaling, display partitions, and window-manager emulation. Therefore, a value printed by ADB is a configuration value, not automatically a measurement of the glass panel.

Prepare the device and verify the connection
- Install Android’s ADB command-line tools (the SDK Platform-Tools package) on your computer.
- On the phone or tablet, enable Developer options and USB debugging. If you are using wireless debugging, pair or connect it through the Android settings first.
- Connect the device with a data-capable cable when using wired ADB. A charge-only cable will not provide an ADB connection.
- Run
adb devices. Approve the RSA debugging prompt on an unlocked device if Android displays one.
adb devicesA device listed with the state device is ready. An unauthorized state means the authorization prompt has not been accepted; an empty list means ADB has not established a connection.
Read the reported resolution
adb shell wm sizeA typical response can contain a physical or native value and an override, for example:
Physical size: 1080x2400
Override size: 720x1600The active logical size in this example is the override, 720x1600. If no override line appears, the physical/native value is normally the active reported size. Width and height follow the current display orientation; rotating the device can swap their order.
Why an override matters
The window-manager size can be changed for testing, compatibility, or emulation. Android documents that a display size returned through its APIs can differ from the display’s native resolution, and that an emulated size can match a value set with adb shell wm size. Always preserve both lines of output rather than recording only the first number.

Read logical density (often called DPI)
adb shell wm densityThe result is usually a density value such as Physical density: 420 and, when changed, an Override density line. The override is the active logical scaling value. Density controls how Android converts density-independent pixels (dp) into pixels; it is not a trustworthy measurement of the panel’s diagonal or a guaranteed laboratory DPI value.
For UI work, treat density as an Android scaling configuration. For hardware inventory, keep it alongside the model, Android version, and resolution, but do not label it as the screen’s physical pixels-per-inch unless you have an independent manufacturer specification.
Inspect broader display details with dumpsys
adb shell dumpsys displayThis command asks Android’s display service for a much larger diagnostic record. It can expose multiple displays, display IDs, modes, logical and physical dimensions, rotation, and other state that explains why a simple wm result looks unexpected.
Because unrestricted dumpsys output is verbose, target the service you need and save the result with the capture date. On a device with several displays, identify the display ID associated with the panel or window you are investigating instead of assuming display 0 is always the relevant one.

Resolution, window size, and physical size are different
Resolution is not the application window
wm size describes a display configuration. An app may receive a smaller usable window when system bars, split-screen mode, freeform windows, or a display partition consume part of the area. Android recommends current window metrics for application-layout decisions rather than assuming a global display value. If your goal is to test an app’s layout, collect the app’s window metrics in the same state in which the bug occurs.
Resolution and density cannot reveal inches exactly
Two panels can share the same pixel dimensions and logical density while having different physical diagonals. Conversely, the same panel can report a different logical size after an override. To obtain the diagonal, consult the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model or measure the visible panel yourself. Do not calculate a supposedly exact inch value from wm size and wm density alone.
Reset size or density overrides
If a test override is causing confusing output, remove it and read the values again:
adb shell wm size reset
adb shell wm density reset
adb shell wm size
adb shell wm densityThe reset commands remove the corresponding window-manager overrides. They do not change the panel’s native hardware. Rerun both read commands after resetting and record the new output.

A reproducible screen-size inventory
For a device lab, bug report, or CI run, capture enough context that another person can interpret the numbers later:
- Record the exact output of
adb devices, without publishing sensitive device identifiers unnecessarily. - Record the manufacturer and model, Android release, and API level.
- Record
adb shell wm sizeandadb shell wm density, including both physical and override lines. - Record the orientation at capture time and whether the device is in split-screen, freeform, or another partitioned mode.
- When several displays are present, record the display ID and the relevant sections of
adb shell dumpsys display. - Keep the command output with a timestamp and test name. If you reset an override, preserve the before and after outputs.
A small shell capture can make the process repeatable:

Troubleshooting common ADB screen-size problems

Performance, reliability, and safety notes
The wm queries are lightweight and normally return immediately. dumpsys display is more expensive to read and parse because it returns a broad diagnostic snapshot; use it when you need context, not for every high-frequency poll.

Results are state-dependent. Rotation, external displays, multi-window mode, display partitions, and temporary overrides can all change what an app or the window manager reports. For reliable comparisons, hold those conditions constant and retain the raw command output. Do not infer hardware quality, panel size, or color characteristics from these commands.

Can I identify the correct physical display when a device has more than one?
Yes, but you must correlate the display ID and records in adb shell dumpsys display with the panel or window under test. Do not assume that the first display listed is the one your app uses.
Should I use wm size values to choose an Android layout breakpoint?
Not by themselves. Global display values can differ from the app’s usable window in split-screen, partitioned, or decorated windows. Use the app’s current window metrics for layout decisions.
What should I archive for a bug report involving screen dimensions?
Archive the raw wm size, wm density, and relevant dumpsys display output together with model, Android/API version, orientation, display ID, and any active override.
