Start in your WordPress dashboard and check Appearance. If you see Editor, your site uses a block theme: open Appearance → Editor and edit the Footer template part. If you see Widgets, use Appearance → Widgets to change the footer widget area. Classic themes may also put footer settings under Appearance → Customize.

First, identify your theme’s footer workflow

The active theme determines which controls are available. WordPress.com describes the distinction plainly: how you edit the footer depends on the theme type.

Dashboard menu Theme type What it controls Typical scope
Appearance → Editor Block theme Footer template-part blocks Every page using that template part
Appearance → Widgets Classic theme Footer widget areas Templates that display those widget areas
Appearance → Customize Usually a classic theme Theme-specific footer and site-identity settings Depends on the theme

If Editor is missing, that does not necessarily indicate an error. Your theme may be classic, or your WordPress installation may expose only the controls its theme supports.

Change a footer in a block theme

Block themes treat the footer as a reusable template part. A saved change can therefore appear on every page that uses that footer.

  1. Open Appearance → Editor.
  2. Open the homepage preview, or select Patterns if you want to work directly with a template part.
  3. Open List View and select Footer.
  4. Choose Edit original or Edit pattern, depending on the interface shown.
  5. Modify the blocks. Use a Paragraph for copyright text, Social Icons for profile links, Navigation for footer menus, or Contact Info for address and phone details.
  6. Click Save and confirm the changes.

If no Footer template part appears, open the Block Inserter and search for “footer,” then add or create the footer structure supplied by your theme.

Change copyright text

Select the existing paragraph or text block in the Footer template part and replace its wording. Check the live site afterward, because this shared block may be displayed on several templates.

Add social links or a footer menu

Insert a Social Icons block for profile links, or a Navigation block for pages such as About, Contact, Privacy, and Terms. Configure each link in the block settings, then save the template part.

Change a footer in a classic theme with Widgets

Classic themes commonly provide one or more footer widget areas, such as Footer 1 and Footer 2. These areas accept blocks even though the theme does not use the full Site Editor.

  1. Go to Appearance → Widgets.
  2. Scroll to the footer area. Your theme may label it Footer, Footer 1, Footer 2, or something similar.
  3. Expand the area and select an existing block to edit it.
  4. Use the inserter to add a Paragraph, Navigation, Social Icons, or another available block.
  5. Click Update.

The exact number and placement of footer areas are theme-specific. If the footer area is not listed, the theme may control it through the Customizer instead.

Use the Customizer in a classic theme

Open Appearance → Customize and look for sections named Footer, Footer Options, Widgets, or Site Identity. Theme authors choose these labels, so the available controls differ.

The Customizer is primarily a classic-theme interface. Block themes generally direct you to Appearance → Editor for visual appearance changes.

Change or remove the WordPress.com footer credit

The footer credit is the attribution line identifying a WordPress.com site. The available choices depend on both the theme type and, for classic themes, the plan.

  • Block theme: edit the credit directly in the footer template part. WordPress.com allows removal for block themes.
  • Classic theme: go to Appearance → Customize → Site Identity → Footer Credit and choose from the wording offered there.
  • Plan limitation: removal is available for classic themes on Business or Commerce plans. Other plans must retain an attribution option.

Use different footers for different page groups

Block themes can assign separate footer template parts to selected templates, allowing a homepage, shop, or another template group to have its own footer.

  1. Open Appearance → Editor → Patterns.
  2. Select Add Pattern → Add Template Part.
  3. Choose Footer, design the new footer, and save it.
  4. Assign the template part to the templates that should use it.

This is useful when a shop needs different navigation or legal links from the main site, but it also creates more than one footer to maintain.

Understand the scope before saving

A block-theme footer is shared content. Page-specific text placed there will repeat on every page using that template part. Review the affected templates before adding announcements, one-time promotions, or page-specific contact details.

Footer widgets can also appear across multiple pages wherever the classic theme calls that widget area. Preview key page types after updating, including the homepage, posts, pages, and shop templates if your site has them.

Should you edit footer.php?

Directly editing footer.php is an advanced fallback for a classic theme when dashboard controls cannot produce the required result. It is theme-specific maintenance, not the normal beginner method.

  • Make a backup copy before changing the file.
  • Use a child theme or another update-safe approach when appropriate; edits to a parent theme can be overwritten by theme updates.
  • Keep a way to restore the previous file. A PHP syntax error can make the site fail to load.

If the required change is available in Widgets or the Customizer, use that visual control instead of modifying PHP.

Choose the right method

Method Theme compatibility Skill level Best for Main risk or limitation
Site Editor Block themes Visual editing Text, menus, social links, and reusable footer layouts Changes can affect every template using the shared footer
Widgets Classic themes Visual editing Adding or rearranging footer content in widget areas Available areas and display depend on the theme
Customizer Mostly classic themes Visual editing Theme-specific footer settings and footer credit choices Controls and labels vary by theme and plan
footer.php Classic themes with file access Code and troubleshooting experience Changes unavailable through dashboard controls A PHP error can crash the site; updates may overwrite edits

Troubleshoot common footer problems

“I don’t see Appearance → Editor”

Check for Appearance → Widgets or Appearance → Customize. Those menus indicate a classic-theme workflow. Also confirm that you are editing the intended site and have permission to change its appearance.

My change does not appear on every page

You may have edited one template instead of the shared Footer template part, or the page may use a different template group. In a block theme, inspect the template assignments under Appearance → Editor.

The footer looks different after an update

Theme updates can change available widget areas, block patterns, or Customizer controls. Recheck the active theme’s supported workflow before editing files.

My footer content repeats unexpectedly

That is normal for a shared template part or widget area. Move page-specific content into the page or template where it belongs rather than placing it in the global footer.
