To change the number on an existing Viber account, open Viber on your phone and go to More → Settings → Account → Change phone number. The new number must be active and able to receive a verification SMS or call. Use Viber’s built-in change-number flow rather than registering a separate account if you want to preserve account continuity.
If you are also moving to a new phone, back up first and use the dedicated New phone number and new device option on the old phone. Viber chat-history restoration works only between phones on the same platform: Android to Android or iPhone to iPhone.
Choose the right process

Before you change the number
- Keep Viber installed and active on the old phone until the change and any needed backup are complete.
- Activate the new SIM or eSIM and confirm it can receive ordinary SMS messages or calls. Viber does not accept internet-based VoIP numbers for activation.
- Have the country code ready. After selecting the country, enter the number without a local leading zero.
- If you use 2-step verification, have your six-digit Viber PIN and access to the email address attached to it.
- If you are changing phones, check that the backup account is available: Google Drive for Android or iCloud for iPhone.
Important: If the new number already has a Viber account, changing your current account to that number can override and deactivate the existing account. Viber does not merge accounts, and data or purchases belonging to the existing account may be lost. Do not continue unless you are prepared to sacrifice that account.
Change your number on the same phone
- Open Viber and tap More.
- Go to Settings → Account → Change phone number.
- Choose New phone number, then tap Continue.
- Select the country and enter the new number without its local leading zero.
- Check the number carefully. Tap Yes to confirm or Edit to correct it.
- Enter the six-digit code sent by SMS or phone call and follow any further prompts, including your 2-step-verification PIN if requested.
After the change, check that your account and important chats are available, then make a fresh Viber backup. Menu wording can vary slightly by app version. Viber’s current instructions are in its change-number guide.

Change your number and move to a new phone
Do this from the old phone while you can still access the existing Viber account. First check the platform limitation: Viber says chat history cannot be restored from Android to iPhone or from iPhone to Android. Use a same-platform move if you need Viber chat history.
On the old phone
- Open Viber and tap More → Settings → Account → Change phone number.
- Choose New phone number and new device, then tap Continue.
- Choose whether to include photos and videos, then tap Back up now.
- When the backup finishes, tap Back on Android or Done on iPhone.
- Select the country, enter the new number without its leading zero, tap Continue, and verify the number with the code.
On the new phone
- Install Viber from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Open it, enter the new number, and complete activation.
- When prompted, choose to restore Viber content. Use the same Google account or Apple ID that holds the backup.
- Wait for restoration to finish and check important conversations before erasing or resetting the old phone.
Viber’s chat-history transfer guide explains backup and restore details. You can also make a manual backup from More → Settings → Account → Viber Backup, choose an automatic schedule or Back up now, and decide whether to include photos and videos.

What carries over—and what needs attention

| Chats and settings | For a number change on the same phone, Viber says the account retains its chats and settings. On a new phone, chat restoration depends on a suitable backup and a supported same-platform move. |

Will Viber tell your contacts?
Viber says contacts who have your current number saved may receive an in-chat notification that your number changed. Blocked contacts are excluded. This notification is not the same as updating everyone’s phone address book: tell people directly if you need to ensure they save the new number.
Activation problems
No SMS or call arrives
- Check the country selection, number, and country code.
- Confirm the SIM or eSIM is active and can receive ordinary texts or calls.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If you are abroad, try enabling data roaming temporarily.
- Choose Activate via call if Viber offers it.
- If you receive a Flash Call, Viber may use the last four digits of the incoming number as the code.
- Avoid repeatedly requesting codes; activation attempts are limited.
The code is rejected or activation fails
Enter the SMS or answered-call code exactly as received. For a Flash Call, use the last four digits of the calling number. Viber’s activation guidance says there are three attempts to enter a code; after repeated failure, you may need to wait 24 hours. “Activation failed” can also mean the number was temporarily restricted by Viber’s anti-spam system, including when a recycled number was previously associated with spam. Update the app, stop retrying, and contact Viber Support if the restriction appears mistaken. See the activation troubleshooting guide.

You forgot the 2-step-verification PIN
After entering the activation code, choose Forgot PIN if that option appears. Viber can send a reset email to the address associated with 2-step verification. Repeated incorrect PIN entries can trigger a 24-hour block. See Viber’s 2-step-verification instructions.
You are trying from Desktop or a tablet
Viber’s number-change process must be completed on a phone; a linked computer or tablet cannot change the account number. Make the change on the phone, then check the linked devices.

You no longer have the old phone or number
The safest change-number path depends on access to the active account on the old phone, particularly when both the number and device are changing. If the phone is unavailable or you cannot complete verification, contact Viber Support. Recovery is not guaranteed, and you should not assume Support can transfer chats or change the number without verification.

Other cases to avoid
- Multiple SIMs: Manually check the intended number under Account → Change phone number. Viber warns that tapping Change to SIM number without checking can cause accounts to override one another.
- Already activated on the new phone: Activating Viber there deactivates it on the old phone. If you still can, return to the old phone, make the backup and use the correct change-number flow before trying to restore. Without a backup, chats may not be recoverable.
- New number already in use: Accounts cannot be merged. Stop before confirming if you need the account currently attached to that number.
- Old SIM about to be cancelled: If you keep the old number in Viber instead of changing it, later verification may go to a number you can no longer access.
