The iPhone’s Personal Hotspot name is the iPhone’s device name. To change it, go to Settings > General > About > Name. To replace the hotspot password, open Settings > Personal Hotspot > Wi‑Fi Password—or use Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot > Wi‑Fi Password if Personal Hotspot is nested there.
Change the Personal Hotspot name
iPhone does not provide a separate field for naming Personal Hotspot. The hotspot appears to other devices using the iPhone’s device name.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Tap Name.
- Delete the existing name, enter the new one, and save it.
Apple documents this name as the identifier used by Personal Hotspot and also by other services and connections, including AirDrop, Bluetooth, iCloud-related device lists, and computers. In other words, renaming the hotspot also renames the iPhone elsewhere.

Choose a recognizable name that does not reveal your full name, address, phone number, or workplace. Standard letters and numbers are the safest choice for older laptops, car systems, game consoles, and other devices that may display unusual characters incorrectly.

Change the Personal Hotspot password
The password is controlled separately from the device name.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Personal Hotspot. If it is not listed, tap Cellular, then Personal Hotspot.
- Tap Wi‑Fi Password.
- Enter the replacement password.
- Tap Done.
Apple requires the password to contain at least eight characters and recommends ASCII characters: English uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and supported punctuation. Avoid emoji, accented letters, and unusual symbols because some connecting devices may reject or mishandle them. See Apple’s Personal Hotspot connection instructions for the current requirements.
Use a unique password that is not based on your name, phone number, address, birthday, or carrier. A short, memorable ASCII passphrase is often more practical than a difficult string when you must type it on a television, car display, console, or Windows PC. Do not publish or broadly share it.

Allow other devices to join
Changing the password does not necessarily mean Personal Hotspot is available to every nearby device. To let a non-Apple device or a person outside your Apple Account or Family Sharing setup connect, turn on Allow Others to Join in the Personal Hotspot settings.
This setting is about allowing connections; it is not a prerequisite for merely opening the settings page and changing the password. Eligible Apple devices using Instant Hotspot can sometimes connect without manually entering the password. That convenience does not mean the hotspot has no password.
Reconnect a laptop, tablet, phone, or other device
After changing either the name or password, connect again using the device’s normal Wi‑Fi process:

- Open Wi‑Fi settings on the device you want to connect.
- Select the iPhone’s new device name from the available networks.
- Enter the new Personal Hotspot password.
- Accept or trust the connection if the device asks.
For common devices:
- Another iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > Wi‑Fi, then select the iPhone’s hotspot.
- Mac: Select the hotspot from the Wi‑Fi menu.
- Windows PC: Select the hotspot from the available Wi‑Fi networks and enter the password.
- Other equipment: Use its standard Wi‑Fi setup screen.
A device that saved the old network information may continue trying the previous credentials. If it will not accept the new password, select the old hotspot entry and choose Forget, Remove, or the equivalent option. Then search again and join the newly named network manually.

If Personal Hotspot is missing or unavailable
The exact Settings layout can vary with iOS version, carrier configuration, and whether the feature has already been provisioned. Try these checks:

- Turn on Cellular Data in Settings > Cellular.
- Check whether your US carrier and plan support Personal Hotspot. Apple requires carrier support, and availability or additional charges depend on the plan.
- Install any available iOS update and restart the iPhone.
- If Personal Hotspot is absent or dimmed after those checks, contact the carrier. The problem may be plan eligibility or carrier provisioning rather than an iPhone setting.
Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular data connection; it is not a Wi‑Fi repeater. It cannot generally rebroadcast your home Wi‑Fi network through the hotspot feature. With Dual SIM, the menu path is unchanged, but Personal Hotspot uses the cellular line selected for cellular data.
If the new name or password does not appear
Work through these steps in order:
- Return to Settings > General > About > Name and confirm the new iPhone name was saved. For the password, check the value directly under Settings > Personal Hotspot.
- On the iPhone, open the Personal Hotspot settings page and leave it open while the other device searches. Apple specifically recommends staying on this screen until the connection is established.
- Turn Wi‑Fi off and back on on the connecting device, then search for the hotspot again.
- Turn Personal Hotspot off and back on.
- Forget the old hotspot network on the client device and reconnect from scratch.
- Restart both the iPhone and the device attempting to connect.
- On supported newer iPhone models, try Maximize Compatibility in Personal Hotspot settings if the other device cannot discover or join the network.
Apple warns that Maximize Compatibility can reduce performance and Wi‑Fi security, so treat it as a compatibility fallback rather than a permanent speed or security improvement.
If the password is rejected
- Read the password directly from the iPhone instead of relying on memory.
- Check uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation carefully.
- Confirm it has at least eight characters.
- Use standard ASCII characters only.
- Forget the saved hotspot entry on the connecting device and enter the password manually.
- Restart both devices if authentication still fails.

Use USB or Bluetooth when Wi‑Fi is unsuitable
Wi‑Fi is usually the simplest option, but Apple also supports other connection methods:
- USB: Useful for a computer when you prefer a wired connection. Windows may require Apple Devices or iTunes for Windows, and the iPhone may ask you to trust the computer.
- Bluetooth: An alternative for Mac or Windows when Wi‑Fi discovery is unreliable, although setup is less straightforward and may be slower.
Personal Hotspot uses cellular data and can drain the battery quickly, particularly when several devices are connected or when streaming and downloading. Turn it off when it is no longer needed to prevent unwanted data use or automatic connections.
The number of devices that can connect at once depends on the carrier and iPhone model. Carrier support, plan restrictions, and possible charges also vary, so do not assume Personal Hotspot is included with every US mobile plan.
Reset network settings only as a last resort
If the feature still fails after restarting, updating, forgetting the old network, and checking carrier support, you can consider resetting network settings. This is not a routine fix for a name or password change.
A network reset removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN settings. You will need to configure those connections again afterward. Use it only when less disruptive troubleshooting has failed, and follow Apple’s current on-screen instructions before confirming the reset.
