Before you switch, check what happens to your old Play balance, Play Points, subscriptions, and access to some content. Google says an update can take up to 48 hours.
Before changing your Google Play country
A Play country change is meant for a move, not a temporary trip or a way to browse another storefront. Google requires you to be in the new country and have a payment method from there. It also says you must wait at least 90 days between changes. The current requirements and consequences are in Google’s Play country help page.
- Play balance: Your balance stays tied to the old country and does not transfer. It may become usable again if you later switch back to that country.
- Play Points: You lose your points and Play Points level when you change countries.
- Content: You may lose access to some apps, games, books, movies, or TV shows. This does not mean every purchase disappears; availability varies by territory and publisher or developer.
- Subscriptions: Existing subscriptions remain active on the old payment profile unless canceled. To use one with the new country profile, you may need to cancel it and subscribe again after the current billing period. Availability, price, billing date, promotions, and saved data can differ.
- Family group: You cannot change country while in a Google Family group. Leaving or deleting a group can affect shared content and family payment arrangements, so review the consequences first.
Google Play country is not the same as your device language, GPS location, IP address, Google Account language, or the region setting in another app. Changing those settings does not by itself update the Play storefront.
Change the country on an Android device
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Tap Account and device preferences, then Country and profiles.
- Tap the new country and follow the prompts to add a payment method issued in that country.
Google’s documented Android steps are at Google Play Help. Menu wording may vary slightly with interface updates; look for “Country and profiles.” Google does not specify a universal Android version requirement for this procedure.

Change the country on a computer
- Go to play.google.com and sign in to the relevant Google Account.
- Select your profile icon, then open Settings.
- Scroll to Country and profiles and select the country you want to use.
- When prompted, add a payment method from that country.
Google says the profile update can take up to 48 hours. The web labels may differ slightly from Android’s.
If the country is already listed
If “Country and profiles” shows more than one country, select the existing profile for the country you want to use rather than adding another. The change can still take up to 48 hours to appear throughout Play.

If “Country and profiles” is missing or the change does not work
- Confirm you are in the new country. A VPN, travel plans, or a manually entered billing address does not replace Google’s physical-location requirement.
- Check the 90-day limit. If you changed Play country within the last 90 days, you may need to wait.
- Check Google Family membership. A regular member must leave the family group. A family manager who needs to change country must delete the family group. Review Google’s Family Library guidance before taking that step, since shared purchases and family arrangements may be affected.
- Verify your Payments profile. Sign in to Google Pay, open Settings, and check Payments profile → Country/Region. If it is wrong, Google’s guidance may require creating a new profile for the new country rather than editing the old one. See Google’s country-change troubleshooting.
- Allow the update window to pass. Wait up to 48 hours before trying to change settings again.
- Refresh a stale storefront. Update or restart the Play Store; if it still shows the old country, clear the Google Play Store cache and data, then check again. Clearing cache cannot make an ineligible account qualify.
- Contact Google Play support if the country is correct and you still cannot complete a purchase, particularly if you are traveling.
If you see “Your purchase couldn’t be completed. Please update your Play account settings so that the selected Play country matches your country of residence,” check that the selected country matches where you live and that your payment method is from that country. Also confirm the Payments profile and allow the propagation window before retrying.
What happens to services and purchases after a switch?
Apps, games, books, movies, and TV shows
Some content may no longer be available in the new country, depending on licensing and publisher or developer decisions. Google describes this as possible loss of access to some content, not automatic removal of every purchase.

Subscriptions
A subscription is not automatically transferred to the new payment profile. It remains active on the old profile unless you cancel it. If the service is offered in the new country, you may need to wait for the existing billing period to end and subscribe again; the new offer may have different terms. A developer may discontinue a subscription in a market where it is unavailable.
Google Play Pass
Play Pass continues to auto-renew. If it is available in the new country, access remains the same. If it is not available there, you can still access apps already installed but cannot browse or install additional Play Pass apps.

Google Play balance and Play Points
Balance stays with the old country and does not transfer; Play Points and your level are lost on the change. These are separate consequences, so check both before proceeding.
Family Library and shared purchases
Family groups are country-sensitive, and leaving one can affect access to shared apps, books, movies, and TV shows as well as family payment arrangements and purchase approvals. Google’s details are in its Family Library help and family payment methods help.

Gift cards and VPNs are not substitutes for eligibility
Google Play gift cards and promotional codes are tied to the country and currency where they are purchased or offered; the Play account country must match. A foreign gift card is not a workaround for a country mismatch. See Google’s gift card and code rules.
A VPN may change the apparent network location, but it does not meet Google’s stated requirements to be in the new country and have a local payment method. If you have moved, use the country-change settings and eligible local payment method instead of trying to imitate another location.
