Gmail does not have a separate password. Your Gmail password is the password for your entire Google Account, including Drive, YouTube, Photos, and other Google services. To change it, open Google Account Security, choose Password under How you sign in to Google, verify your identity, and save a new password. If you cannot sign in, use Google Account recovery instead.
Change your Gmail password on a computer
- Go to myaccount.google.com/security and make sure the correct Google Account is active.
- Under How you sign in to Google (Google may label this Security & sign-in), select Password.
- Sign in again or complete the security check if Google asks.
- Enter the new password, enter it again, and select Change Password.
You can also open Gmail, select your profile picture, choose Manage your Google Account, open Security, and select Password. The direct Security page is the more reliable route because Google regularly changes Gmail’s menus and labels.

Change it on Android
- Open Settings and tap Google.
- Choose the account, if prompted, then tap Manage your Google Account.
- Open Security and tap Password.
- Verify your identity, enter the new password twice, and save it.
Android manufacturers and versions can place these controls differently. If you cannot find them, open Google Account Security in a browser.
Change it on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Gmail or another Google app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Manage your Google Account.
- Open Security (some versions may put the option under Personal info) and tap Password.
- Complete verification, enter the new password, and save it.
App layouts vary by version, so the browser fallback at myaccount.google.com/security is usually quickest.

Forgot your Gmail password? Reset it
A normal change assumes you can sign in. If you forgot the password, start a recovery process at accounts.google.com/signin/recovery:
- Enter the Gmail address or phone number associated with the account.
- Choose one of the verification methods Google offers.
- Answer as many ownership questions as possible and create a new password when prompted.
Use a device, browser, and location you have used for this account before. Enter the most recent password you remember, do not skip questions unnecessarily, and check spam or junk folders for expected Google messages. Google says to enter passwords and verification codes only at accounts.google.com. Recovery options are account-specific and recovery is not guaranteed.
If your recovery phone or email is unavailable, select another option shown in the recovery flow and continue. If you do not recognize the masked recovery information, confirm that you entered the correct Gmail address; if access is restored, remove any unfamiliar recovery details immediately. Google may temporarily disable an option after too many incorrect attempts.

If someone else changed your password
Use the same recovery page. Google also provides guidance for a password changed by someone else. Regaining the password is only the first step. Follow Google’s compromised-account checklist and inspect:
- Recent security events and the list of signed-in devices
- Recovery phone numbers, email addresses, and 2-Step Verification methods
- Third-party apps and services with account access
- Gmail forwarding addresses, filters, delegation, Sent, and Trash folders
- Saved passwords and other sites where the old password was reused
Change reused passwords on those other sites too. A new Google password does not by itself remove every form of persistent access.
What happens after you change the password?
Google may ask some devices and apps to authenticate again; it does not promise identical, immediate sign-out behavior everywhere. Gmail or another Google app may stop syncing until its sign-in is renewed. A third-party client may show “password incorrect” or “authentication failed.” Update the app and use Sign in with Google when offered.

Changing the main Google Account password revokes Google app passwords. Older mail clients, scanners, or other devices that genuinely cannot use modern Google sign-in will need a replacement app password, and app passwords require 2-Step Verification. They are a fallback, not the default for Outlook or Apple Mail.
Secure the account after changing it
- Use a long, unique password that is not used on another website. A reputable password manager, including Google Password Manager, can generate and store it.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification from Google Account Security. Prompts, authenticator codes, passkeys, security keys, and backup codes are available depending on the account. SMS and voice codes can be more vulnerable to phone-number attacks.
- Add and verify a recovery phone and email. Google notes that, after recovery information changes, a previous method may still be offered for seven days.
- Review devices, recent security activity, connected apps, and saved passwords.
Never share your password or verification codes. Avoid reset links in unsolicited messages; open Google settings or type the official recovery address yourself.

“I cannot find Password”
Check that you are in Google Account settings—not Gmail’s mailbox settings—and that the intended account is active. Try myaccount.google.com/security. Work, school, and other managed accounts may hide or restrict this control; contact the organization’s administrator.

Google keeps asking me to verify
This can be normal after a password change, unusual login, new device, or recovery attempt. Complete the offered verification method rather than repeatedly guessing alternatives.
Outlook, Apple Mail, a phone, or a scanner stopped sending mail
Reauthenticate, update the software, and choose Sign in with Google. If the device only supports legacy authentication, create a new app password after confirming 2-Step Verification is enabled. Replace obsolete hardware that cannot authenticate securely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my Gmail password the same as my Google password?
Yes. Gmail uses the password for the associated Google Account, so changing it affects other Google services too.
Can I change it without knowing the old password?
Only if Google verifies you through the account-recovery process at accounts.google.com/signin/recovery.
Will changing it sign me out everywhere?
Google may require reauthentication on some devices and apps, but sign-out behavior is not identical in every session. Review devices in Google Account Security.

Use a unique password and change it when you suspect exposure, reuse, or unauthorized access; routine calendar changes are less important than uniqueness and 2-Step Verification.
Should I use an app password?
Only for an older app or device that cannot use modern Google sign-in. App passwords require 2-Step Verification and are revoked when the main password changes.
