To change the name people see by default across Zoom, edit Display Name in your Zoom profile. For just one meeting, enter a different name before joining or choose Participants → Rename during the meeting if the host allows it. These are separate changes: an in-meeting rename does not update your account profile.
Choose the right way to change your Zoom name

Zoom separates First Name and Last Name from Display Name. The first two are the account name; Display Name is the name shown across Zoom and can differ from them. If you want to use a nickname or preferred presentation name, edit Display Name rather than replacing your account name. Zoom’s profile guidance says the field supports up to 10 Chinese characters; that detail should not be treated as a universal character limit for every script. Change your default Display Name
On the Zoom web portal
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal.
- In the navigation menu, select Profile.
- Beside your profile name, select Edit.
- Change Display Name. Change First Name or Last Name only if you want to update those account fields too.
- Select Save.
The Display Name becomes your default name across Zoom, including profile cards and meetings or webinars. Zoom’s instructions for changing your name cover the profile options.

- Sign in to the Zoom desktop app.
- Select your profile picture, then select Profile and My profile.
- Zoom opens your profile in a browser. Beside your profile name, select Edit.
- Enter the desired Display Name and select Save.
The desktop app may take you to the web portal rather than provide an editor inside the app. Zoom’s desktop profile instructions describe this route.

In the Android or iOS app
- Sign in to the Zoom mobile app.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-left corner.
- Tap My profile.
- Under Personal, tap Display name.
- Enter the name and tap Save.
Labels or placement may vary by app version, language, or interface rollout. Look for Profile, My profile, or your account name if the exact wording differs.
Use a different name for one meeting
This is the better choice if you do not want to change your default profile name. It works for signed-in users and guests joining without a Zoom account; a persistent profile edit, by contrast, requires signing in.
Desktop app
- Open Zoom and select Join a Meeting.
- Enter the meeting ID and the name you want displayed.
- Optionally select Remember my name for future meetings.
- Select Join.
Mobile app
- Open the Zoom mobile app and tap Join a Meeting.
- Enter the meeting ID and the name you want displayed.
- Tap Join.
In a browser
- Open the meeting invitation link.
- If prompted to open or download the app, cancel that prompt.
- Select Join from your browser, if available.
- Allow microphone or camera access as needed, enter the name you want displayed, and join. You may also see Remember my name for future meetings.
Join from your browser may not be available if the host has not enabled browser joining or Zoom directs you to an app. For more on joining with a chosen name, see Zoom’s meeting-joining guidance.

Rename yourself after joining
In-meeting renaming is temporary. The host must allow participants to rename themselves; if it is disabled, the option will not appear.
Windows, macOS, or Linux
- Select Participants in the meeting controls.
- Hover over your name and select the three-dot or More menu.
- Select Rename, enter the new name, then select Change or Rename.
Android or iOS
- Tap Participants.
- Tap your name, then tap Rename.
- Enter the new name and tap Done.
Zoom web app
- Select Participants.
- Hover over your name, select More, then Rename.
- Enter the new name and select Change.
Menu wording can vary by platform and interface version. See Zoom’s name-change instructions.
If Rename is missing or your name will not change
- You are in the waiting room: Zoom does not currently let participants change their names while waiting. Set the name before joining, or ask the host to rename you after admitting you.
- The host disabled renaming: Ask the host whether participants can rename themselves, or ask the host to change your displayed name.
- An administrator locked the setting: A Zoom account or group administrator can control the permission, and a lower-level setting may be unavailable when locked.
- Your organization manages your account: With SSO/SAML, your organization may map the name from its identity system or restrict profile edits. Contact your Zoom or identity-management administrator rather than repeatedly changing local app settings.
- You joined signed out: You can enter a name for the meeting, but you need to sign in to edit a persistent account Display Name.
- The profile change is not reflected in an existing meeting: Confirm you edited Display Name, then leave and rejoin. Check whether you joined signed out or whether your organization manages the value. You can enter a meeting-specific name or ask the host to rename you. Zoom’s documentation does not establish a universal sync delay, so do not assume an existing session or historical record will update immediately.
For organizational controls, Zoom documents the Allow participants to rename themselves setting at account, group, and user levels in its participant-renaming settings guide. Web controls may be organized differently as Zoom updates its interface; you may see My account or Admin Center depending on your role and rollout.

For hosts and administrators: enable participant renaming
A host can rename a participant for the current meeting; this does not permanently edit that person’s account profile. See Zoom’s host instructions.
How an administrator can change the permission
Account level: In the Zoom web portal, open Admin Center → Settings → Meeting. Under In Meeting (Basic), find Allow participants to rename themselves and turn it on. An administrator can lock the setting to prevent lower-level changes.
Group level: Open Admin Center → Users → Groups, choose the group, select Edit product settings, open the Meeting tab, then adjust the setting under In Meeting (Basic). If it is grayed out, it is locked at the account level.

User level: In the web portal, open My account → Settings → Meeting, then look under In Meeting (Basic). If the setting is grayed out, an account- or group-level administrator has locked it.
Only account owners or administrators with the appropriate permissions can change higher-level settings. The control is available on Basic (Free) accounts or higher; a paid plan is not required merely to change names.
What changes—and what may not
Editing Display Name sets your default name across Zoom’s profile and meeting experience. Renaming yourself or being renamed by a host changes the display in the current meeting, not your account profile. Do not assume a profile change rewrites names in past recordings, attendance reports, registration records, or chat transcripts: Zoom’s documentation does not clearly establish how those historical records are affected.
Zoom’s web interface and labels can change, and the available controls can depend on device, app version, language, account type, administrator policy, and rollout. If a menu path differs, look for the same profile or meeting control rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
