To change the phone number used for Amazon two-step verification (2SV), sign in and go to Account & Lists → Your Account → Login & security. Open Two-Step Verification (2SV) Settings (sometimes labeled Advanced Security Settings), then change the enrolled number or add and verify a replacement before removing the old one. You do not need to turn off 2SV first. If you cannot use any enrolled method, start Amazon’s account-recovery process instead.
First, check which phone number you need to change
Amazon can store contact numbers for different purposes. The number in your general account profile, the number used for delivery alerts, and the phone enrolled specifically for 2SV are not necessarily the same. To update sign-in verification, use the dedicated 2SV settings under Login & security; changing a profile or delivery-contact number alone may not update your authentication method. Amazon’s Two-Step Verification help describes adding, changing, and removing enrolled methods.
- Still able to sign in and receive a code: change the number in 2SV settings.
- Able to sign in using another method, but not the old phone: add and verify a replacement method, then remove the old one.
- No access to any enrolled method: use account recovery rather than trying to edit the number from settings.
- An unfamiliar number is enrolled: treat it as a possible security issue and secure the account.
Change the number while signed in
These steps target a standard Amazon customer account. Labels and screens can vary by country, service, account type, and interface version; Amazon help pages use both Manage and Edit.
- Sign in to Amazon. Complete any security-code prompt you can access.
- Open Account & Lists → Your Account → Login & security.
- Find Two-Step Verification (2SV) Settings. Choose Edit or Manage. In some interfaces, open Advanced Security Settings and then choose Edit. Amazon Pay documents this settings path in its password-security instructions.
- Under Enrolled 2SV Authenticators, select Change next to the old phone number if that option appears.
- Enter the replacement number, choose SMS or voice call if Amazon offers a choice, and enter the one-time password (OTP) sent to that number.
- Save or confirm the change. Check that the replacement is shown as an enrolled method before relying on it.
Keep 2SV enabled during the update. Amazon says users do not need to enable it again just to change a phone number.

If “Change” is not available, add the replacement first
Use this sequence when the settings page does not offer a direct replacement control:
- Choose Add new phone or Add new phone or Authenticator App.
- Enter the new number and complete Amazon’s verification prompt.
- Confirm the new number appears under enrolled authenticators and, if practical, test it by signing out and back in.
- Only then select Remove beside the obsolete number.
Do not leave a number enrolled if you no longer control it: a canceled number could later be reassigned. Amazon’s KDP help page says up to two phone numbers can be added in that KDP context; that limit should not be assumed to apply to every Amazon service or account type.
Consider an authenticator app instead of SMS
Amazon supports compatible authenticator apps, including Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator. An app generates one-time codes without cellular service, so it avoids dependence on SMS delivery or a carrier phone number. It is not risk-free: if you lose the device and have no app backup or other enrolled method, you may lose access to the codes.

- Install a compatible authenticator app.
- In Amazon’s 2SV settings, choose Add new phone or Authenticator App, then select Authenticator App.
- Scan Amazon’s QR code or enter the setup key in the app manually.
- Enter the six-digit code displayed by the app and confirm enrollment.
- Keep another recovery method enrolled if Amazon offers one, and store any app recovery information securely. Do not share the QR code or setup key.
Moving to a new phone does not necessarily move every authenticator secret. Use the app’s secure transfer or backup feature, or enroll the new device with Amazon while you still have account access.
If you lost the phone or cannot receive an OTP
If the phone itself is lost but the number is still yours, a replacement SIM or device from your carrier may let you receive the code. If the number was canceled, reassigned, or is no longer under your control, do not rely on it. Contact your carrier promptly if the number might be recoverable; otherwise use a registered backup number, authenticator app, or another trusted sign-in route.

- Check that the last digits Amazon displays match a number you recognize.
- Confirm you have signal or Wi-Fi as appropriate, and check spam, blocked senders, and message-filtering settings.
- If available, choose Didn’t receive the OTP? and try another enrolled method or a voice call.
- Ask your carrier whether short-code or automated messages are blocked; temporarily remove a carrier restriction if needed.
- Try a device or browser Amazon already recognizes, or an authenticator app or registered backup number.
- Request a fresh code rather than repeatedly requesting many codes. Never give an OTP to someone who contacts you claiming to be Amazon support.
An Amazon sign-in OTP is not necessarily the same as an order-verification code, device-registration code, or another security prompt. Receiving one type of code does not prove that the number is enrolled for 2SV.

The ordinary settings page cannot replace a factor you cannot use. Open Amazon’s Two-Step Verification Account Recovery page and follow its on-screen steps. Amazon’s published recovery guidance may require a scan or photograph of a government-issued identity document. Make sure the required name, address, and issuing authority are visible, but conceal unnecessary sensitive details such as identification or account numbers. Submit documents only through Amazon’s official help flow, not to forum users or unofficial support accounts.
An Amazon staff response reproduced in a Seller Central discussion described verification as taking approximately one to two days and said Amazon would email if 2SV was disabled. Treat that as an estimate for that recovery flow, not a guaranteed deadline; after recovery, configure and verify a working method.

If the recovery page loops back to sign-in
Some users have reported that recovery flows can appear to require access to the account they are trying to recover. A Seller Central community discussion documents this reported problem; forum experiences do not establish a universal Amazon procedure.
- Start from Amazon’s official recovery help page, not a forum link or search advertisement.
- Use the affected account’s original email address; do not submit a request under another account unless Amazon instructs you to.
- If you cannot reach the form, use Amazon’s official Help or Customer Service route and explain that you have lost access to the 2SV method, not merely the password.
If the enrolled number is unfamiliar
An unknown phone number is a warning sign, though it does not by itself prove that the account was compromised. Amazon’s KDP security guidance identifies unexpected 2SV prompts and changes you did not make as suspicious activity.

- If you can sign in, change your Amazon password and review the enrolled 2SV methods; remove numbers or authenticators you do not recognize.
- Review recent orders, payment methods, addresses, account email, and other account activity.
- Secure the email account associated with Amazon as well, and contact Amazon through official support if account details changed without your authorization.
If the old number may now be controlled by someone else, remove it after establishing a working replacement. If you cannot access the account, use the recovery route rather than sending codes or identity documents to anyone who contacts you.
Amazon services may show different settings
Amazon.com, KDP, Seller Central, Audible, and Amazon Pay may expose different labels or account pages. KDP’s help page notes that 2SV configured for KDP can also apply to the associated Amazon customer account when the same email address and password are used. If a service’s interface does not match the steps above, look for its Login & security or 2SV settings, or use that service’s official help route. Do not assume that a change to an order-contact number updates authentication for every service.
