If you mean the physical Application or Menu key, you can remap it with SharpKeys on Windows 7, 8/8.1 and 10. On compatible Windows 10 systems, Microsoft PowerToys is easier and can also assign a shortcut or text. SharpKeys makes a system-wide key-to-key change that takes effect after you sign out or restart; PowerToys applies its remapping while the utility is running.
Windows does not have a standard Settings page for changing this key. The steps below cover the physical context-menu key—not shortcuts that work only inside one app.
Identify the key before changing it
The App key is also called the Application key, Menu key or context-menu key. It usually sits to the right of the spacebar, often between the right Windows key and right Ctrl key. Its usual purpose is to request a context menu for the currently selected item, much like right-clicking. Whether a menu appears depends on the focused app and selected control.

Also check that you are not referring to a manufacturer-specific launch key, a Copilot or Office key, or an Fn-layer function. Those may be handled by keyboard firmware or a driver rather than delivered to Windows as an ordinary key event. If Windows cannot see the key, a standard remapper may not be able to change it.

Remap the App key with SharpKeys (Windows 7, 8/8.1 and 10)
SharpKeys uses Windows’ built-in scan-code mapping mechanism, so it is the practical cross-version option for a straightforward key-to-key remap. Its project documentation lists support for these Windows versions: SharpKeys on GitHub.
- Download SharpKeys from its official project page or its listed Microsoft Store source, then install and open it.
- Select Add.
- In the left column, select the App/Application/Menu key. Try Type Key and press the key; if it is not recognized, select it from the key list instead.
- In the right column, select the key you want the App key to produce.
- Confirm the mapping, then select Write to Registry.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, for the change to take effect.
Test the result in Notepad and File Explorer, then in the app where you intend to use it. SharpKeys writes a Scancode Map value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlKeyboard Layout. Disable the App key
In SharpKeys, choose the tool’s Turn Key Off destination if it is available in your version, then write the mapping and sign out or restart. The exact UI wording can vary between releases. Before disabling any key, make sure you can still enter your Windows password and use another keyboard or the on-screen keyboard if needed. A registry remap can apply at sign-in, so disabling a key you rely on there can complicate recovery.
What SharpKeys can and cannot do
SharpKeys is for mapping one complete key to another complete key, or turning a key off. It cannot make one key send a combination such as Ctrl+Shift+S, nor can it vary the mapping by application. It also cannot remap a key that the keyboard’s firmware or driver intercepts before Windows receives it. SharpKeys notes that some unusual scan codes, including certain multi-byte codes, cannot be handled by the registry method.

Use PowerToys Keyboard Manager on compatible Windows 10 systems
If your Windows 10 installation can run Microsoft PowerToys, Keyboard Manager provides a convenient way to send another key, a shortcut or text from the App key. Microsoft’s current documentation explains its capabilities and limitations: Keyboard Manager in PowerToys. Do not assume PowerToys is suitable for a Windows 7 or 8 installation.
- Install PowerToys from Microsoft’s official distribution channel and open PowerToys Settings.
- Select Keyboard Manager.
- Choose Remap a key, then Add key remapping.
- In the Select column, press the App key or choose it from the list.
- In the To send column, choose the desired key, shortcut or text action.
- Select OK or Apply, then test the key.
PowerToys applies the mapping while it runs in the background; no restart should be needed. To stop the remapping, close PowerToys or turn off Keyboard Manager. It does not apply on password screens. If the target app is running as administrator, PowerToys may also need to run elevated for the mapping to work.

Make the App key send a shortcut
For a simple mapping such as App key → Ctrl+Shift+S, use Remap a key: the physical App key is the input, and the shortcut is the output. SharpKeys cannot do this. PowerToys also supports application-specific shortcut remappings; when you target an app, use its process name, such as msedge.exe, rather than just its display name. Refer to Microsoft’s Keyboard Manager documentation for the supported mapping options.

When to consider AutoHotkey
AutoHotkey is a scripting alternative when you need conditional behavior, macros, multi-step actions or app-specific automation beyond a simple remap. It requires a script to run in the background and takes more setup than either a registry remapper or PowerToys. Choose it when you need that extra behavior, not just to replace or disable the App key. Do not assume a script can capture a hardware-only or firmware-handled key that Windows never receives.

If the remapping does not work
- The key still opens a context menu: If using SharpKeys, confirm that you selected Write to Registry and then signed out or restarted. If using PowerToys, check that Keyboard Manager is enabled and PowerToys is running.
- The key is not detected: Try SharpKeys’ Type Key and PowerToys’ key selector. Check the keyboard’s Fn Lock state, try another keyboard, or look in the manufacturer’s keyboard utility. A firmware- or driver-controlled key may not be remappable through these methods.
- It works in ordinary apps but not in a game: Compatibility varies with how the game reads input and with anti-cheat software. Microsoft cautions that PowerToys Keyboard Manager may not work reliably in games; do not assume a mapping will work in every title.
- It fails only in an elevated app: Try running PowerToys with matching administrator privileges. PowerToys remapping may not reach a target application running at a higher privilege level.
- Behavior changes with Fn Lock: The same physical key may send different events in different Fn modes. A mapping for one event will not necessarily cover the other.
Undo the change
PowerToys: Open PowerToys Settings → Keyboard Manager, remove the remapping or disable Keyboard Manager. Closing PowerToys also stops its remapping.
SharpKeys: Open SharpKeys, remove the mapping, select Write to Registry, then sign out or restart. If you need to remove the registry value directly, use an elevated Command Prompt:
reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlKeyboard Layout" /v "Scancode Map"Confirm the path carefully: it is Keyboard Layout, singular. Restart Windows after deleting the value. If you are editing the registry manually, export or back up the relevant key first; SharpKeys is safer for creating the mapping because it constructs the binary value automatically.

For Windows 7 and 8/8.1, use SharpKeys for a simple remap. On compatible Windows 10 systems, choose PowerToys for shortcuts or app-specific behavior, and SharpKeys for a permanent system-wide key-to-key mapping. If the key is controlled in keyboard firmware, use the manufacturer’s utility or firmware settings if available.
