To change the User-Agent a site sees, use your browser’s developer tools for a temporary test, or an extension/preferences override when you need a persistent or per-site value. In Chrome and other Chromium browsers, open DevTools, go to Network conditions, clear Use browser default, choose or enter a string, and reload. Firefox uses the general.useragent.override preference, while Safari on macOS provides User Agent choices in its Develop menu. This changes the identity string sent to servers and may change the content they serve; it does not replace the browser’s rendering engine or add missing features.
What changing a User-Agent actually does
A User-Agent (UA) is a request header that identifies a client to a web server. A traditional value follows a pattern such as Mozilla/5.0 (<system-information>) <platform> (<platform-details>) <extensions>. Browsers increasingly reduce identifying detail to limit fingerprinting. Sites that need more information can request User-Agent Client Hints, delivered through Accept-CH and Sec-CH-UA-* headers.
An override can make a server select a mobile layout, a compatibility branch, or a browser-specific feature flag. It does not turn Chrome into Safari, Firefox into Chromium, or a desktop engine into a phone engine. JavaScript APIs, cookies, Client Hints, rendering behavior, and other signals can still reveal the real browser.
Chrome and Chromium browsers: temporary override
The DevTools method is safest for one-off compatibility checks because it normally ends when you close DevTools or clear the setting.

- Open the page you want to test and open DevTools with
F12,Ctrl+Shift+Ion Windows/Linux/ChromeOS, orCommand+Option+Ion macOS. - Open the Network panel. Select the three-dot menu, choose More network conditions, and locate the User agent section. You can also open the Command Menu with
Ctrl+Shift+P(Windows/Linux/ChromeOS) orCommand+Shift+P(macOS), then run Show Network conditions. - Clear Use browser default.
- Choose a supplied browser/device string, or select the custom option and enter the exact value required by your test.
- Reload the page. Requests made while the override is active use the selected string.
Change Client Hints when the site uses them
In the same Network conditions panel, expand User agent client hints. Edit the advertised brand, version, platform, or mobile values, select Update, and reload. A UA string alone may not reproduce a device path when the site also checks these hints.
Return Chrome to normal
Reopen Network conditions, select Use browser default, and reload. Close DevTools after testing and verify the page in a fresh tab. If an extension is also rewriting requests, disable it while diagnosing the result.
Firefox: inspect, override, or repair the value
See the current User-Agent
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Choose Help, then More Troubleshooting Information.
- On
about:support, find User Agent. Mozilla’s example for Firefox 83 on Windows 10 isMozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0.
Set or remove a Firefox override
- Enter
about:configin the address bar and accept the warning. - Search for
useragent. - To repair an accidental change, reset or delete
general.useragent.override. If you created other user-agent override preferences, reset those too. - Restart Firefox and test the site again.
Mozilla cautions that about:config is intended for experienced users; a wrong preference can affect stability, security, or performance. If the site still shows the wrong layout or a compatibility warning, clear its cookies and cached files. Add-ons can also alter the detected value, so repeat the test with add-ons disabled if the problem disappears.
Safari on macOS
- Open Safari and, if necessary, enable the Develop menu in Safari’s Settings under Advanced.
- Choose Develop in the menu bar.
- Open User Agent and select the browser/device identity you want to test.
- Reload the page while that choice is active.
Use this as a compatibility and debugging tool, then return to Default. Apple recommends that websites use feature detection rather than trusting a browser name or version in the UA string, so a UA change is not a substitute for testing actual feature support.

Edge, Brave, Opera, and other Chromium browsers
Chromium-based browsers generally expose the same DevTools workflow: open DevTools, find Network conditions, clear the default-UA checkbox, choose or enter a value, and reload. Menu names and keyboard shortcuts vary by vendor and release; the DevTools Command Menu is the quickest way to search for “Network conditions.”
If you need a persistent or per-site value, an extension is the usual approach. Google’s Chrome Web Store listing for User-Agent Switcher for Chrome describes choices for Chrome, Internet Explorer, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and custom strings. An extension can intercept requests and may affect performance. It does not improve privacy, and sites can still detect the real browser through other signals.
Choosing a value for a useful test
- Mobile layout: use a mobile UA and, in DevTools, also emulate a mobile viewport if you are checking responsive design. A UA change by itself does not change screen dimensions, touch input, or device hardware.
- Browser compatibility: use the exact browser/version branch you need to reproduce, then test the default identity as a control.
- Legacy routing: preserve the complete string supplied by the service or test plan. Removing platform or version tokens can select a different server path.
- Automation: keep the value in your test configuration and record it with results. Do not assume that a spoofed UA represents a real device.
Keep a copy of the original value before editing it. Use a custom string only for a defined test case and restore the default afterward.
Why a User-Agent change may not work
The page looks unchanged
The site may use feature detection, cached responses, cookies, Client Hints, or JavaScript rather than the UA string. Clear site data, use a private window, update Client Hints where available, and compare the request headers in DevTools.

The site still blocks you
Bot checks, CAPTCHA systems, rate limits, IP reputation, TLS characteristics, JavaScript behavior, and account signals are independent of the UA header. Spoofing the string does not bypass those controls.
The layout is broken after installing an extension
Disable the extension and restore the browser default. If the problem goes away, configure the extension for only the required domain or remove it. Interception can affect performance and can leave different headers inconsistent.
Firefox keeps showing an old identity
Search about:config again for every useragent preference, reset general.useragent.override, restart Firefox, and clear cookies/cache for the affected site. Check add-ons before creating a new override.
Only some requests use the new value
Verify that the override was enabled before the request began. Existing tabs, service workers, extensions, subframes, and requests made by another application may not follow the same setting. Start a new tab, reload, and inspect the Network panel request headers.

Testing and privacy limitations
User-Agent reduction means a string may contain less detail than older examples found online. Servers can ask for additional Client Hints, and scripts can examine APIs, canvas behavior, fonts, screen metrics, cookies, and timing. Consequently, a UA override is useful for server-routing and compatibility tests, not for anonymity.
Changing identity can also select a code path that the underlying engine cannot execute. Treat a successful response as evidence that the server delivered different content, not proof that the page works on the claimed browser. Always run a final test with the real browser identity.

- Write down the browser’s original UA before changing it.
- Use DevTools for temporary tests; use an extension or Firefox preference only when persistence is necessary.
- Match Client Hints, viewport, cookies, and site data when reproducing a real issue.
- Inspect request headers and test both the override and the browser default.
- Restore the default, disable extensions, and clear site data when troubleshooting is complete.
- Do not treat UA spoofing as a privacy tool or as proof that another browser’s engine is running.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can changing the User-Agent make Chrome use Safari’s engine?
No. It changes the identity sent to servers and possibly the content returned, but Chrome continues to use its own rendering engine and browser APIs.
Is a User-Agent switcher an anonymity tool?
No. Client Hints, JavaScript, cookies, device characteristics, and network signals can still identify the actual client.
Should I leave a custom User-Agent enabled permanently?
Usually not. Keep overrides tied to a defined test, then restore the browser default to avoid misleading sites and breaking compatibility.
