To change the Windows 11 touch-keyboard theme, open Settings > Personalization > Text input, then choose a theme under the touch-keyboard or theme controls. You can also create a custom theme where those controls are available. These settings are for the touch keyboard—not necessarily the separate On-Screen Keyboard (OSK).
Change the touch-keyboard theme
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Text input.
- Find the Touch keyboard or Theme section. Scroll down if needed.
- Select a preset theme. Close Settings, open the touch keyboard, and check the result.
The exact labels and available choices can vary by Windows 11 version, device, and feature rollout. Microsoft describes text-input personalization and related settings in its Windows 11 settings reference. Text-input themes can also affect visual elements in experiences such as voice typing and the emoji panel, though not every surface necessarily changes in exactly the same way.
Create a custom touch-keyboard theme
If a preset is not a good fit, select the custom-theme option in Settings > Personalization > Text input. Depending on your Windows build, the available controls may let you choose a background color or image, set key-background and key-text colors, adjust key-background transparency, and change key-label size. Choose the options shown on your device and save or apply the theme if prompted.

- Set the background or background image, if offered.
- Choose the key background and key text colors.
- Adjust transparency and key-label size if those controls are available.
- Apply or save the theme, then open the touch keyboard to check that labels remain easy to read.
For legibility, use strong contrast between the key faces and their labels. A custom background image is not available in every version or interface, so use the controls actually shown in Settings rather than assuming every installation has the same options.

Theme, layout, and size are different settings
- Theme changes visual styling, such as colors and background.
- Layout changes the arrangement of the keys—for example, standard, narrow, split, handwriting, or expanded layouts. Open the touch keyboard’s settings icon, usually in its upper-left corner, to choose a layout. See Microsoft’s guide to touch-keyboard layouts.
- Size or scaling changes how large the keyboard appears; key-label size changes how large its labels look. Look for these controls in Text input if your build provides them. They are not the same as Windows display scaling, which affects more of the interface.
- Windows color mode and accent color are system-wide appearance settings, not substitutes for the dedicated text-input theme controls. See Microsoft’s guide to personalizing Windows colors.
Show the touch-keyboard icon
If you cannot open the keyboard to check the theme, enable its taskbar icon:
- Right-click the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand System tray icons.
- Set Touch keyboard to Always or When no keyboard is attached.
The available choices are Never, Always, and When no keyboard is attached. The last option can hide the icon when Windows detects a wired or Bluetooth keyboard. Choosing Always is useful when you want the icon available for manual testing. This controls the icon’s visibility, not the theme or whether the keyboard opens automatically. Automatic behavior can depend on Windows version and whether a physical keyboard is connected. See Microsoft’s instructions to enable or disable the touch keyboard.

Touch keyboard versus On-Screen Keyboard
Make sure you are changing the right keyboard: the touch-keyboard theme controls do not necessarily apply to the On-Screen Keyboard.

Microsoft documents the OSK separately in its On-Screen Keyboard guide. If changing Text input themes has no effect, check whether you have opened the OSK rather than the touch keyboard.

Fix missing or unchanged theme options
“Text input” is missing
Search Settings for Text input and confirm you are looking under Personalization, not Accessibility. Older Windows instructions may show a different path, and a feature or label may differ on an older or unusually configured Windows 11 installation. Install available Windows updates and restart. If the page still is not present, do not download an unofficial keyboard utility just to obtain the built-in theme picker.
The keyboard icon is missing
Check Taskbar settings > System tray icons > Touch keyboard. If When no keyboard is attached is selected, Windows may hide the icon while a physical keyboard is connected. Set it to Always to make it available.

The theme changed, but the keyboard did not
- Close and reopen the touch keyboard.
- Select a different preset, then select the intended theme again.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows.
- Confirm that you are viewing the touch keyboard, not the OSK.
- If a third-party keyboard utility or device-maker customization is installed, check whether it is replacing or changing the built-in experience.
The keys are hard to read
Try a higher-contrast preset or choose more distinct key-background and text colors in a custom theme. Increase key-label size if available. If low contrast affects Windows more broadly, consider a system-wide option under Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes; Microsoft explains these options in its guide to changing color contrast in Windows.
Advanced: documented registry settings
Microsoft documents touch-keyboard personalization values under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftTabletTip1.7, including IsKeyBackgroundEnabled, KeyLabelSize, UserKeyboardScalingFactor, and theme-related values. The reference lists implementation details such as a KeyLabelSize range of 0–2 and a UserKeyboardScalingFactor range of 1–1000; these are not recommended values or a substitute for the Settings interface.

Registry editing is more fragile than using Settings, and values may change with Windows updates. Avoid changing them unless you understand the risks. If you do proceed, back up the relevant registry key first and change only documented values. Microsoft’s settings reference provides the documented names and ranges, but it is not a step-by-step guide to creating a custom theme through registry edits.
