On iOS 26, open Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Fetch New Data. Choose a schedule under Fetch, then check each account and set it to Fetch if you want that schedule to apply. Automatically is not real-time: Apple says it retrieves mail in the background when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi‑Fi.
Change the overall Mail fetch schedule
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Tap Mail Accounts.
- Tap Fetch New Data.
- Under Fetch, choose the schedule shown on your iPhone.
Typical choices may include Automatically, Manually, Every 15 Minutes, Every 30 Minutes, and Hourly, but Apple does not promise that every device, account, or iOS build will display the same list. Use the choices your phone presents. See Apple’s current instructions at Apple’s iPhone User Guide.
Set the mode for one account
The global Fetch interval is used only by accounts set to Fetch. An account set to Push or Manual follows different rules.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Fetch New Data.
- Tap the affected account.
- Choose Fetch, if that option is available.
- Return to the previous screen and select the desired interval under Fetch.
If Push is available, the email provider supports provider-delivered updates for that account. If Push is not offered, Apple Mail cannot create it; use Fetch or Manual instead. Apple explains these account-dependent options at Apple Support.

What Push, Fetch, Automatically and Manual mean
| Setting | Best for | Main limitation |

| Fetch | Regular background checks when Push is unavailable | Checks occur periodically, so delivery is not guaranteed at an exact minute |

| Manual | Maximum control and minimal recurring checks | Mail generally updates when you open it or refresh it |
Shorter Fetch intervals may increase background network activity and battery use, but Apple does not publish a universal amount. Fetch controls when the iPhone checks; it does not guarantee when a provider, network, or notification system will deliver an alert.
Choose the right option
Choose Push
Use Push when it is offered and prompt updates matter more than minimizing background activity.

Choose a short Fetch interval
Use the shortest interval shown when Push is unavailable and a delay of several minutes is acceptable.

Choose Automatically
Use it when battery and background-data efficiency matter more than prompt retrieval, and you are comfortable with checks mainly while charging on Wi‑Fi.

Choose Manual
Use it for rarely checked accounts or when you do not want recurring background checks.
If Mail still does not update
- Check the account mode. Make sure the affected account is not set to Manual. If it is set to Push, the Fetch interval does not apply.
- Review Automatically. If it is selected, the phone may wait until it is charging and connected to Wi‑Fi.
- Check notifications. Open Settings → Notifications → Mail and enable notifications for the relevant account, including alerts, sounds, or badges as needed.
- Review Focus. A Focus mode can suppress or delay Mail alerts even when a message has been retrieved.
- Verify internet access. Test another website or app on the same connection.
- Test the provider. Sign in through the provider’s website, confirm the password, and check for an outage.
- Review security requirements. Two-step verification, an expired authentication token, or a required app-specific password can stop Mail from connecting.
- Refresh manually. Send a test message from another account, leave the iPhone locked and online for at least the selected interval, then open Mail and pull down to refresh if needed.
Retrieval and notification are separate: Mail may already contain a message while its alert is blocked, or it may not have fetched the message at all. Fetch is a periodic check, not an exact delivery appointment.

When to use the provider’s app
If your account does not offer Push in Apple Mail and near-immediate notifications are essential, consider the email provider’s official app. That app may expose the provider’s own notification system; behavior varies by provider and account, so it is an alternative rather than a guarantee.
Older iOS menu paths
The verified current path for iOS 26 is Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Fetch New Data. Older iOS releases may place it under Settings → Mail → Accounts → Fetch New Data. If the labels differ, search Settings for Fetch New Data.

Before removing and re-adding an account
Use account removal only as a last resort. Confirm that important messages exist on the provider’s website or elsewhere first: removing an account can delete locally downloaded copies from the iPhone, even though messages stored on the provider’s server generally remain available. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance covers this warning at Apple Support.
