In Windows 11, select the speaker icon on the taskbar, open the output-device list beside the volume slider, and choose your speakers, headphones, monitor, or other device. To make a device the normal Windows output, go to Start > Settings > System > Sound and select it under Output. If it is missing or selected but silent, use the troubleshooting steps below.
What “audio output” means
An audio output is where Windows sends sound: for example, built-in speakers, wired or USB headphones, Bluetooth speakers, an HDMI or DisplayPort monitor, a TV, a receiver, or a dock. It is different from an audio input, such as a microphone or line-in. Changing the output does not, by itself, change which microphone Windows uses.
Switch output quickly in Windows 11
- Select the speaker/volume icon on the taskbar.
- Select the arrow beside the volume slider to open the list of sound-output devices.
- Select the device you want to hear sound from.
Windows sends ordinary system playback to the selected output. This is the quickest way to switch between speakers and headphones, but an individual app may have its own output assignment. Microsoft calls this control “Select a sound output.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet the default output in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the device you want to use.
Selecting a device here changes the active/default playback target in the current Windows configuration. If you want to use the classic default-device controls, select More sound settings, open the Playback tab, right-click the device, choose Set as default, then select OK. Individual apps can still be assigned to a different output.

Change audio output in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses different labels from Windows 11:
- Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar and select Open Sound settings.
- Under Choose your output device, select the speakers or headphones you want.
To explicitly set a classic default, right-click the taskbar volume icon, select Sounds, open Playback, select the device, choose Set Default, and select OK. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; its standard support policy no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.

Route one app to a different device
If system sounds use one device but a browser, game, media player, or meeting app uses another, check the app assignment in Windows 11:

- Select Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the app. It may need to be open before it appears.
- Check that its volume is not muted, then set its Output device.
Some apps have their own audio-device control and may take precedence over Windows Volume mixer. If the app keeps using the old device, close and reopen it, then check its own audio settings. See Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting steps.

Switch to Bluetooth headphones or speakers
Pair and connect the Bluetooth device first. Then open Settings > System > Sound and choose it under Output. A device showing as connected is not necessarily the selected playback output, and names or available audio profiles differ among manufacturers.
If it is connected but silent, confirm it is selected under Output, check Windows and device volume, and disconnect and reconnect it. If that does not work, remove and pair it again, then check that Windows has not selected another output such as HDMI or the laptop speakers. Microsoft’s Bluetooth-connected-but-no-sound guidance covers further checks.

Why sound may go to a monitor, TV, or dock
HDMI and DisplayPort connections can add a display, TV, or receiver to the list of audio outputs. Windows may select it even if the monitor has no built-in speakers, or its speakers are disabled. A dock can also expose a separate audio device.

If the output device does not appear
- Check that the device is powered on and connected. For USB audio, try another USB port; also check the cable, adapter, or dock.
- Restart the PC and reconnect the device.
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device is listed but disabled, right-click it and select Enable device.
- If it is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- If it remains missing, install the audio driver for your exact PC, motherboard, sound card, or audio device from its manufacturer.
A “No audio output device is installed” message generally indicates a detection, driver, disabled-device, or hardware issue—not simply the wrong choice in the output selector. Microsoft’s missing-device guide has additional steps. Avoid removing drivers as a first response when the device is present and you only need to select it.
If the selected device is silent
Work through these checks from least disruptive to more involved:
- Check mute and volume. Raise Windows volume, confirm the device is not muted, and check physical controls on the headset, speakers, monitor, or receiver.
- Check the app. Open Volume mixer and inspect the app’s volume and output assignment. Also check the app’s own audio settings.
- Confirm the device is enabled and default. In More sound settings > Playback, check the intended device and set it as default if necessary.
- Turn off audio enhancements temporarily. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound, select the output device, find Audio enhancements, and set it to Off. Alternatively, open the device’s Properties in the Playback tab and, if present, use Enhancements > Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects. Some manufacturers put this control on the Advanced tab.
- Try another available format. In Settings > System > Sound, select the output device and open Advanced. Choose another listed Default format and test it. The available options depend on the hardware and driver; there is no one format that is best for every device.
- Run the audio troubleshooter. Microsoft directs Windows 11 users to the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- Update or reinstall the driver. Prefer the current driver for your PC, motherboard, sound card, or audio device from its manufacturer, especially if the problem began after an update or the device is missing or unstable.
- Restart audio services if needed. As an advanced step, select Start, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder. - Test the hardware. Try another port, cable, headset, or speaker to identify whether the issue follows the device.
These are troubleshooting possibilities, not guaranteed fixes. Microsoft’s guidance for low or quiet sound and distorted or crackling audio covers volume, enhancements, formats, drivers, and services.
Quick check when sound comes from the wrong place
- Is the intended device selected under Output?
- Is Windows or the physical device muted?
- Is the affected app muted or assigned to a different output?
- Is the device connected, powered on, and enabled?
- Did Windows select an HDMI monitor, TV, or dock instead?
- If the sound is distorted or absent, does turning enhancements off or trying another available format help?
- If the device is missing, does it appear in Device Manager, and does another port or cable work?
Menu names can vary slightly by Windows version, installed updates, and device manufacturer. Windows 11 is the current Windows version; Windows 10’s taskbar and Settings routes remain different, and its standard support ended on October 14, 2025.
