To let players see farther on an Aternos server, change the server’s view-distance in server.properties, save it, and restart the server. Then set Minecraft’s client-side Render Distance to the same value or lower. Raising only the in-game slider cannot exceed the distance the server sends.
Render distance and view distance are different
| Setting | Where you change it | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Render Distance | Minecraft’s video settings | How many chunks your computer attempts to display |
view-distance |
Aternos server properties | How far the server loads and sends chunks around players |
Your effective view is limited by the lower value. A client set to 16 cannot display useful terrain beyond a server view distance of 6. Conversely, raising the server value does not force a player’s computer to render more chunks.

Aternos explains the distinction in its view/render distance guide.
Change the server distance on Aternos
- Stop the server. Log in to Aternos, select the server, and stop it completely before editing its properties.
- Open the properties. Select Files, then open
server.properties. Depending on the current Aternos panel, you may see a structured property editor instead of a plain text view; search forview-distance. - Enter a value. Replace the existing number with the distance you want, such as
6or8. Do not enter a command or add units. - Save the change.
- Restart the server. Aternos server-option changes do not take effect until the server is restarted, as noted in its server-options documentation.
- Adjust each player’s client. In Minecraft, open Options → Video Settings → Render Distance (the exact menu wording differs in Bedrock). Set it to the new server value or lower.
No /gamerule command is required. view-distance is a server property, not the normal gamerule for changing chunk visibility.

What value should you use?
There is no safe universal maximum. The practical limit depends on the number of players, server software, mods and plugins, entity and redstone activity, hardware, and whether players are generating new terrain.
- Low-powered or heavily modded server: start around 5–6.
- Small vanilla or Paper server: test around 6–8.
- Increase in small steps, restart, and have several players explore in different directions before raising it again.
The cost rises rapidly as the value increases. Aternos gives an example in which view distance 5 can involve up to 121 chunks, while 10 can involve up to 441—almost four times as many. More chunks mean more loading, generation, network traffic, CPU work, and memory pressure. Several players spread across the world can multiply that workload.

If the setting is capped or unavailable
Aternos exposes different options and limits depending on the edition and server software. A selected software type may have a different default or maximum, and plugins or performance settings can override behavior. Check that you edited the server’s view-distance, not only your personal video setting. Do not assume a maximum shown in one Java configuration applies to every Aternos installation.
On Java Edition, Aternos identifies Paper as a performance-oriented option that can make a higher view distance more practical. Paper does not make high values free: test after switching, and back up first because changing software can affect plugins, mods, configuration, and world behavior. Aternos’s plugin guidance explains the Java-software context.

Troubleshooting
“I raised Render Distance, but nothing changed.”
The server value is probably lower. Increase view-distance on Aternos first, restart, and then set the client slider no higher than that value.
“The new number did not apply.”
Confirm that the file was saved and the server was fully restarted. A stop-and-start cycle is required for server-option changes.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10

“The server became laggy.”
Lower view-distance again, preferably in small steps. Watch for delayed chunk loading, movement stutter near unexplored areas, slow ticks, or lag that worsens when players separate. Lowering each player’s client Render Distance can improve that player’s FPS, but lowering the server value is the direct way to reduce the shared chunk workload.

“There is fog at the edge.”
In Minecraft 1.18 and newer, the client can show fog at the server’s loaded-area boundary. A client-side fog-removal option may change the appearance, but it cannot make the server send additional chunks. See Aternos’s fog explanation.

“I use Bedrock Edition.”
Bedrock and Java do not always expose identical labels or property controls. Aternos maintains edition-specific Minecraft documentation, so use the property editor and menus shown for your particular Bedrock server rather than assuming the Java path is identical.
When Aternos is not enough
If the desired distance consistently causes lag or Aternos will not expose a high enough limit, first consider Paper for a Java server and reduce other workloads. Terrain pre-generation can reduce pauses caused by generating unexplored chunks, but it does not remove the ongoing cost of keeping more chunks available.
For substantially more hardware, higher distances, advanced performance controls, or complete file access, Aternos points users to its paid platform, exaroton. It is not necessary for a small server that performs well at a moderate value, and current pricing should be checked on exaroton’s own site.

The Bottom Line
For everyone to see farther, edit Aternos’s view-distance, save, and restart. Then raise Minecraft’s client Render Distance only as high as the server and each player’s hardware can handle; increase gradually and reduce it again if lag appears.
