To change how quickly the pointer speeds up when you hold a numeric-keypad direction key, open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse > Mouse keys speed. Adjust Acceleration to change how quickly movement ramps up, and Maximum speed to change the fastest movement reached. These are separate from the regular mouse-pointer speed setting.
Change Mouse Keys acceleration in Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings. You can also press Windows + U to open Accessibility settings directly.
- Select Accessibility, then select Mouse under Interaction.
- Turn on Mouse keys.
- Open Mouse keys speed.
- Move Acceleration toward the lower end for a more gradual ramp, or toward the higher end to reach top speed sooner. Adjust Maximum speed separately if the pointer’s eventual speed is still too slow or too fast.
Microsoft’s Mouse Keys instructions give this Windows 11 Settings path. Labels or layout can vary somewhat by Windows release.
Mouse Keys is an accessibility feature that uses the numeric keypad instead of a physical mouse. Its acceleration control governs keypad-generated movement; it is not the same as a conventional mouse acceleration curve. In Microsoft’s Win32 documentation, the related parameters are iMaxSpeed and iTimeToMaxSpeed: the latter describes the time taken to reach maximum speed. The documented API ranges are 10–360 for maximum speed and 1,000–5,000 milliseconds for time to maximum speed. Those are API values, not numbers necessarily shown in Settings or a guarantee of a particular on-screen speed on every PC. See Microsoft’s MOUSEKEYS structure documentation.

Move the pointer over an uncluttered part of the desktop. Hold a direction key briefly, then hold it longer to compare the initial movement with the ramp toward maximum speed. Change one slider at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.

For precise placement, use short taps rather than holding a direction key. Practice click-and-drag on a harmless desktop item before using it in an application where a mistaken drag or click could have consequences.
Use Control Panel if the speed controls are missing
If your Settings layout does not show the speed controls, try the legacy Control Panel configuration:

- Press Windows + R, type
control, and press Enter. - Open Ease of Access or Ease of Access Center.
- Select Make the mouse easier to use.
- Under Control the mouse with the keyboard, choose Set up Mouse Keys.
- Adjust the speed and acceleration controls, then select Apply and OK.
Control Panel remains available in Windows 11, but category names can differ with view mode, localization, or build. Microsoft’s Mouse Keys support page also describes the older setup route.

- Mouse keys speed affects pointer movement generated by the numeric keypad.
- Mouse pointer speed, at Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse, affects ordinary mouse-pointer movement.
- Enhance pointer precision is a separate Pointer Options setting for standard pointer movement, not the Mouse Keys acceleration slider.
- Touchpad settings and a mouse maker’s software control their respective devices; they do not replace the Mouse Keys controls.
If changing the normal pointer-speed slider has no effect on keypad movement, that is expected. Microsoft documents those ordinary mouse options separately in its mouse-settings guide.
Choose a useful speed and ramp
- For careful positioning: Start with a lower maximum speed. If holding a key still makes the pointer surge too quickly, reduce acceleration as well. Use short taps for the smallest adjustments.
- For moving across a large screen: Raise maximum speed. If it takes too long to get there, increase acceleration so the pointer reaches that speed sooner.
- For frequent short movements: A more gradual ramp may be easier to control because the pointer spends less of each brief press near its top speed.
- For long, continuous movements: A higher maximum speed and faster ramp can reduce the time spent holding a key.
There is no universally right setting. Screen size and resolution, keyboard behavior, hardware, and Windows version can affect how the controls feel. Change one control, test it, and then adjust the other if needed.

Troubleshoot Mouse Keys movement
The keypad types numbers instead of moving the pointer
Check Num Lock. Depending on the configuration, its state determines whether the keypad acts as a number pad or as Mouse Keys. Toggle it and test a direction key again. Also confirm that Mouse Keys is turned on in Settings > Accessibility > Mouse.
Your keyboard has no numeric keypad
Mouse Keys is designed around keypad keys. An external USB numeric keypad is one option; some laptops have an embedded keypad, but its availability and activation shortcut depend on the manufacturer. The On-Screen Keyboard may be a workaround, though it can be less practical for continuous pointer movement. Windows voice or other accessibility input may suit some users better.

The pointer is still slow or overshoots
- If it never gets fast enough, increase Maximum speed.
- If it reaches a suitable top speed too slowly, increase Acceleration.
- If it moves too far, lower Maximum speed, reduce acceleration, or use shorter key presses.
- Make sure you changed Mouse keys speed, not the regular mouse-pointer speed.
Test on the desktop first. If the controls appear not to apply, try the Control Panel setup above and confirm Mouse Keys is enabled. A restart or sign-out is not normally a required part of changing these sliders.
Mouse Keys turns on unexpectedly
The Left Alt + Left Shift + Num Lock shortcut may toggle Mouse Keys when the relevant accessibility hotkey option is enabled; it is not necessarily active on every system. If the feature switches on unexpectedly, review the Mouse Keys and shortcut options in Accessibility settings and check whether the shortcut is being pressed accidentally. Microsoft Q&A includes reports of unexpected activation, but these are troubleshooting reports rather than a guarantee of one specific cause.
Can you turn Mouse Keys acceleration completely off?
Windows provides an acceleration control, but Microsoft’s standard user-facing guidance does not describe a simple off switch that guarantees perfectly constant-speed movement. Lowering acceleration makes the ramp more gradual; it should not be treated as a documented acceleration-free mode.

Those discussions do not establish a supported, reliable Windows 11 procedure. Registry edits can be build-sensitive or overwritten by the interface, so use Settings first and Control Panel as the fallback rather than relying on registry recipes.
Mouse Keys is intended as a keyboard-based accessibility input method, not a substitute for a gaming mouse. Changing a gaming mouse’s acceleration or pointer settings does not change how Windows Mouse Keys behaves.
