Most battery-powered Blink cameras take two AA 1.5 V lithium non-rechargeable batteries. Identify your camera first, because the cover release varies by model; Blink Mini cameras use USB power and do not need battery changes.
Before you open the camera
- Confirm the model. Check its name in the Blink app or on the device. Blink identifies Outdoor 4, Outdoor and Indoor (3rd Gen), XT/XT2, Indoor (1st Gen), and Video Doorbell among its battery-powered devices; power arrangements vary by model. Blink’s camera power guide distinguishes these from USB-powered Blink Mini cameras.
- Use the specified batteries. Install two AA 1.5 V lithium non-rechargeable cells. Blink recommends Energizer Ultimate or an equivalent and advises against alkaline or rechargeable batteries. See Blink’s battery FAQ.
- Have the model’s release tool handy if one is required. For Outdoor 4, the opening tool is generally included; a coin or large screwdriver can turn its cover screw.
Replace the batteries by model
Blink Outdoor 4
- Turn the cover screw counterclockwise until it rotates freely.
- Use the included right-angle opening tool to gently pry the cover in one direction.
- Remove the old batteries. Insert the two new cells, matching their positive and negative ends to the marks in the compartment.
- To close the camera, align the cover post with the keyhole beside the USB port and press the cover into place.
- Turn the screw clockwise about three turns, until the cover is flush.
Blink Video Doorbell
The release depends on the back plate installed on your doorbell. One style has a gray latch at the bottom of the back cover; another uses a release key in the bottom slot to detach the doorbell from its mounting plate. Use the method that matches your plate, open the battery compartment, and replace both cells with their polarity aligned to the compartment marks. Refit and secure the cover, then remount the doorbell as instructed.
Wired doorbell safety: Blink warns that contact posts can carry live current when the doorbell is connected to wiring. For the two-hole plate, Blink instructs users to turn off doorbell-chime power at the breaker before removing the doorbell.
Blink XT and XT2
- Hold the camera with its back facing you.
- Slide and hold the gray switch in the direction of its arrow while pulling the battery cover upward with your thumb. The seal can make the cover tight.
- Replace both cells, matching the polarity marks, then reinstall the cover.
Blink Indoor (1st Gen)
Release the back cover using the latch on the bottom of the camera. Replace both batteries with their positive and negative ends aligned to the compartment marks, then close the cover.

Check the camera after replacement
Open the Blink app and check the battery indication. Blink says it may show “OK” or “Needs Replacement.” A “High Usage” alert can signal that settings are likely to use more battery than normal. If the camera remains offline, check network connectivity before concluding that the new batteries are the cause. Blink explains these indicators and battery-life factors in its battery-life guidance.

What affects battery life?
Blink says up to two years of battery life is expected under default settings. That is an estimate, not a guarantee: settings, usage, heat, cold, slow internet, and weak Wi-Fi or Sync Module signal can shorten it.
For context, Blink lists the Outdoor 4’s operating temperature range as -4 to 113°F (-20 to 45°C). This is the camera’s operating specification, not a claim that battery performance is identical throughout that range. The range and model-specific accessories are listed on Blink Outdoor 4 Technical Specifications.

Optional USB power and accessories
Some battery-powered Blink cameras with a USB port can also use USB power. Blink specifies a 5 V/1 A adapter in its USB power instructions. Removing a port cover can compromise outdoor weather resistance, USB power may affect the battery indicator, and Blink does not support third-party power solutions. Check compatibility for your exact model and use only a Blink-authorized accessory.
The Outdoor 4 specifications list an optional Battery Extension Pack for the US and Canada; it is not a general accessory recommendation for other Blink models. If the Outdoor 4 opening tool is missing, Blink mentions a coin or large screwdriver for turning the cover screw, so a replacement tool may not be necessary.
