You can change Webex audio before you join, during a meeting, or in the app’s preferences for future meetings. Choose a connection method, select the right speaker and microphone, and test them before speaking. Menu names differ across desktop, browser, and mobile versions.
Choose your audio before joining
On a computer, join the meeting until the preview screen appears, then select Audio options. Choose Computer audio to use your computer’s speaker or headset and microphone, Call Me to receive a call from Webex, Call In to dial in yourself, or Don’t connect to audio to join without meeting sound. Call Me and phone dial-in may be unavailable if the meeting or host configuration does not support them.
If you choose Computer audio, select the intended speaker and microphone. Use Test beside each device if shown: the speaker test should play a sound, while the microphone test should register your voice and play it back. Mute before joining if you do not want to enter the meeting with your microphone live. See Cisco’s pre-join audio instructions.
On iPhone, iPad, or Android, tap the audio connection option in the preview and select Use Internet for Audio, Call Me, Call In, or Don’t Connect Audio. The mobile wording differs from desktop; look for Internet audio rather than Computer audio.

Which option should you use? Computer audio with a headset is a straightforward choice for most laptop meetings. Phone audio can be a useful fallback if computer audio or internet performance is poor, though carrier charges may apply and phone options depend on meeting settings. Call Me is convenient if you need to move away from the computer. Choose Don’t connect to audio on a second device when another device in the room is already providing meeting sound, which helps prevent echo.
Switch audio during a meeting
On desktop, select the arrow beside the mute or audio control and choose Switch audio. Depending on the interface, you may find it under More options. Select Use computer audio, Call me at, or Call in, then follow the prompts and confirm the switch if asked.
On mobile, tap More options > Change audio connection, then choose Internet audio, Call Me, Call In, or Don’t Connect Audio. The menu wording can vary by app release. Cisco documents the desktop and mobile switching paths in its audio-switching guide.

If you dial in, enter the meeting details as prompted. When Webex asks for an attendee ID, enter it to associate the phone audio with your Webex participant identity. Without it, the phone connection may appear as a separate participant and may not be controllable from the app. Some meetings restrict participants to internet audio, so phone choices will not always be available.
Set audio preferences for future meetings
In the Webex App for Windows or Mac, open Settings > Meetings > Join & Leave. Choose whether to Use my last join options or Use my default join options. With the default option, select the preferred audio connection and, if useful, enable Mute me when I join.
On iPhone, iPad, or Android, open your profile picture, then Settings > Meetings > Join Options. Choose Use My Last Join Options or Use My Preferred Join Options, set the audio connection, and enable Mute Me When I Join if desired. These are join preferences, not a replacement for changing devices in an active meeting. Labels may vary slightly between versions. See Cisco’s default audio and video settings.

Select a speaker, microphone, and ringer
In the desktop Webex App, open Settings > Audio. Choose separate devices for the Ringer, Speaker, and Microphone, and adjust their volumes. The ringer is where you hear incoming call or meeting alerts; the speaker is where meeting audio plays. On Mac, choose Follow system setting if Webex should use the sound device selected in macOS.
For a USB or Bluetooth headset, make sure it is connected and powered on, then select it in Webex; connecting it does not always make it the active device automatically. If you change devices after opening Webex and the new microphone or speaker does not appear, reconnect it or restart/rejoin the call. On mobile, audio behavior can include switching between speaker and earpiece; available controls depend on the device and whether the call is audio or video. Test your speaker and microphone
Before a call, open the audio settings or preview controls and test both devices. In an active meeting, look under Audio options for Audio Settings or Test speaker and microphone. A successful speaker test produces audible sound. A successful microphone test shows input activity while you speak and lets you hear a recording back. Exact test labels depend on the app view; Cisco’s audio test instructions show the available paths.

Choose the right audio processing
Webex App audio settings include Smart Audio options such as Noise removal, Optimize for my voice, Optimize for all voices, and Music mode. Use noise removal for ordinary background noise; optimize for your voice when nearby conversation competes with you; optimize for all voices when several people are speaking near one microphone. Music mode is for music or other sound where preserving more of the original audio matters. It is not simply a stronger noise-cancellation setting, and speech-focused processing may be less suitable for music.
On macOS Sonoma, Apple’s Mic Modes process sound before it reaches Webex and may conflict with Webex Smart Audio. Cisco recommends using Standard mic mode and choosing optimization in Webex instead. Consult Cisco’s Smart Audio guidance if the available controls differ on your Mac.

No sound from the meeting
- Confirm you joined with audio, rather than selecting Don’t connect to audio.
- Open Audio Settings and select the intended speaker or headset; run the speaker test.
- Raise the Webex volume, system volume, and any physical headset or speaker volume.
- Check that headphones are connected and powered on. If using a browser, make sure the tab is not muted.
- Reconnect Bluetooth headphones, or switch temporarily to built-in speakers or a wired headset.
- If computer audio still fails, try Call Me or Call In if the meeting offers phone audio.
Others cannot hear you
- In Audio Settings, select the intended microphone and run its test while speaking. Check whether the input meter moves.
- Confirm you are not muted in Webex and that any headset mute switch is off.
- Allow microphone access in your operating system and, if using a browser, in the browser’s site permissions.
- Close other apps that may be using the microphone. Reconnect the headset or choose the built-in microphone.
- If the device was connected after Webex opened, reselect it; if it remains unavailable, rejoin the meeting.
Webex browser calling supports Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, but browser and operating-system permissions still need to allow microphone access. A correct device selection in Webex cannot override a denied permission.

There is echo or feedback
Use a headset instead of open speakers, and avoid connecting two devices in the same room to meeting audio. If a phone or conference-room system is carrying the room’s audio, set a laptop used for screen sharing to Don’t connect to audio. Do not leave both the laptop microphone and room-system microphone active for the same meeting.
Audio options are missing
Not every meeting offers every connection method. The host may have enabled VoIP-only audio, telephone audio may not be enabled for the meeting, or Call Me may not be included in the applicable plan or configuration. Menu differences can also reflect whether you are using desktop, browser, or mobile. If you joined by phone without an attendee ID, the phone participant may appear separately.
Your voice sounds clipped or unnatural
Try a different Smart Audio option. Speech optimization can suppress sounds it interprets as background noise; Music mode may preserve sound more faithfully when music matters more than speech enhancement. On a Mac, also check whether macOS Mic Mode is processing the microphone before Webex does.
