You do not need an extension for a basic still image. An extension can add one-click capture, notes, or timestamp links, but its compatibility and permissions must be checked before you rely on it.
The workflow below covers Edge’s built-in tools, optional extensions, quality fixes, troubleshooting, and an automated alternative for developers.
Capture a frame without installing an extension
- Open the video in Edge. Load the YouTube watch page and wait until the player is visible.
- Give the player focus. Click inside the video. YouTube’s current computer experience requires player focus before its keyboard shortcuts respond.
- Pause playback. Press k or select the pause control.
- Choose the exact frame. Press . (period) to advance one frame or , (comma) to move back one frame. Keep the video paused while stepping.
- Open Edge Screenshot. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or right-click the page and choose the Screenshot command. You can also open it from Edge’s Settings menu.
- Select the capture area. Drag around the video for a clean crop, or choose a full-page capture when you need the surrounding page. Confirm the capture and save or copy the result using the Screenshot panel.
Edge’s Screenshot tool can capture selected areas and full pages. Its capture guidance also covers moving content, so pause the player first when the still image must match a particular moment.
Use an Edge extension for one-click captures
Extensions are useful when you capture frames repeatedly, need annotations, or want a timestamp that returns to the same point in a video. Install from Microsoft Edge Add-ons when possible. During installation, read the permission prompt rather than accepting access blindly.

Install from Edge Add-ons
- Open Microsoft Edge Add-ons and search for the extension by its exact name.
- Open the listing and inspect the publisher, version, update date, description, and requested permissions.
- Select Get, review the browser’s permission dialog, and confirm only if the access matches the extension’s purpose.
- After installation, open Extensions from Edge’s toolbar or Settings. Pin the extension if you want its button beside the address bar.
- Visit YouTube, pause and frame-step the video, then use the extension button or its documented shortcut.
Microsoft also documents a route for Chrome-designed extensions: enable Allow extensions from other stores in Edge, then install from the Chrome Web Store. Use this only when you trust the publisher and have checked the permissions.
YT Snapshot – One Click YouTube Screenshot
The Microsoft listing describes an S shortcut, one-click YouTube capture, and an instant download. The listing shows version 1.0.0, updated November 18, 2024, and displays an incompatibility warning stating that it cannot be installed because it is incompatible with the browser version. Treat those details as listing metadata, not a guarantee that it will install or run on your Edge build. Recheck the current listing before depending on it.
ClickShot – Video Notes & Timestamps
ClickShot’s listing describes hotkey capture for YouTube and HTML5 video, local notes and screenshots, and timestamped links that return to a video position. It says an account is not required and that data is stored locally. The listing reports version 0.9.4, updated August 15, 2026, but also displays an incompatibility notice. Verify compatibility with your installed Edge version before installing.
Which capture method should you choose?

For most occasional captures, the built-in method has the fewest failure points. Choose an extension when its additional workflow saves time and its listing confirms support for your browser version.
Make the screenshot cleaner and more accurate
Remove controls and overlays
Move the pointer away from the player and wait for YouTube’s controls to fade before invoking Screenshot. If a title, recommendation panel, or chat overlay remains, use a selected-area crop rather than a full-page capture.

Match the video’s displayed resolution
Maximize the player or switch to theater mode before stepping frames. A larger player gives you more pixels, but the saved image cannot contain detail that YouTube did not render at the chosen quality.
Use frame stepping instead of repeated screenshots
Seeking with the timeline can land between scenes. Pausing and pressing . or , lets you inspect adjacent frames and choose the one with the clearest action, subtitle, or facial expression.
Check subtitles and accessibility overlays
Closed captions, translated subtitles, and accessibility controls are part of the rendered player. Turn them off when you need an unobstructed image, or leave them on when the text is the reason for the capture.

The period and comma keys do nothing
Click inside the video first; focus may still be in the address bar, a comment box, or another page element. Confirm that playback is paused. If a shortcut still fails, use the pause control and timeline, then retry after clicking the player.
The screenshot contains the wrong moment
Moving content can change while the Screenshot panel is open. Pause before opening the panel, wait for controls to disappear, and use a selected-area capture. If the browser captured after playback resumed, repeat the operation with the player focused.

Edge Screenshot is missing
Try the right-click menu, then Edge Settings, and confirm that Edge is up to date. Managed work or school profiles may restrict browser features. An extension can provide a separate capture button, but it must be compatible with the installed version.
An extension will not install
Read the listing’s compatibility notice. Remove a failed or obsolete installation, check Edge for updates, and look for a newer extension release. If you installed from the Chrome Web Store, confirm that Allow extensions from other stores is enabled and then review the permission prompt again.
The extension captures a blank or partial image
Keep the video tab active, wait until the selected frame is fully rendered, and try a smaller crop. Disable other extensions that modify YouTube, including ad blockers or page scripts, one at a time to identify conflicts.
The saved file is too large or blurry
Use a crop instead of a full-page image, avoid enlarging a low-resolution player, and choose the image format offered by the capture tool that fits your workflow. Re-capture at a larger player size when the source video permits it.
Permissions, privacy, and safe extension maintenance
A video screenshot extension may request access to YouTube pages, browsing tabs, or page content so it can read the player and save an image. Compare each permission with the stated feature. Do not install an extension whose access is broader than you can justify.

Review installed extensions periodically in Edge > Extensions. Microsoft recommends confirming that an extension is enabled, checking for updates, verifying necessary permissions, and confirming compatibility when troubleshooting. Disable or remove extensions you no longer use. For sensitive work, prefer Edge Screenshot because it avoids granting a third-party extension access to the page.
