To capture an X post, send its canonical https://x.com/<user>/status/<id> URL to a screenshot API that renders JavaScript in a real browser. Configure the viewport and a readiness condition, then save the returned PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Public posts usually need no login; private or account-restricted views require authorized session credentials and a provider that explicitly supports them.
What a screenshot API actually does
An X post is not a static HTML document. A browser-rendering service navigates to the URL, executes HTML and JavaScript, waits for the page to become ready, and captures the rendered result. Cloudflare describes its Browser Rendering /screenshot endpoint as processing the page’s HTML and JavaScript before capturing the fully rendered page. Hosted screenshot services expose similar controls for full-page images, CSS selectors, viewport dimensions and navigation waits.
Use the canonical post URL rather than a shortened link. Record the final URL, UTC capture time, viewport, wait setting, provider, HTTP result and a content hash with the image. A screenshot shows what the renderer received at that time; it does not establish authorship or the truth of a post.
Choose the right capture boundary

Set a deliberate width and height and capture the visible viewport. This is useful for a preview card or report thumbnail.

Entire rendered page
Enable fullPage when you need the complete scrollable page, including surrounding profile and reply content. Full-page output can be tall and may include more material than the post itself.
Only the post component
Pass a CSS selector when the provider supports it. This produces a focused artifact, but selectors can change as X updates its markup. A post-specific wait selector is generally safer than sleeping for an arbitrary number of seconds.
Choose width and height intentionally: responsive X layouts change at mobile, tablet and desktop breakpoints. If you need reproducible evidence, keep those values fixed and store them with the file.

When to use the X API instead
If your application needs post text, IDs, timestamps, authors or search and analysis fields, use X’s structured API, including its documented GET /2/tweets route. Keep both outputs when appropriate: JSON for indexing and a screenshot for visual evidence such as typography, media placement and rendered layout. X says API users must register an application, and its developer, automation and terms documents govern use at scale.

Public posts
Try the public URL first. A public post can still fail because it was deleted, made private, blocked in the renderer’s geography or made available only to signed-in users.

Authorized restricted views
Use cookies, an Authorization header or another documented session mechanism only for an account and content you are authorized to access. Do not embed credentials in client-side code, logs or shared URLs. A public-URL-only provider cannot capture a login-gated view.
Troubleshooting
Blank or incomplete image
Increase the navigation timeout, switch to a selector wait or network-idle condition, and verify that the URL is the final post URL. A fixed delay can help, but it is less deterministic than waiting for a meaningful element.
Login wall or private post
Confirm that the post is accessible to the supplied session and that the provider supports cookies or headers. If it does not, use a public post or a provider with documented authenticated rendering.
Consent banner, popup or chat widget
Use a cleanup-capable service such as ScreenshotNeo, or hide the offending selector with a documented CSS option. Do not assume an image is clean merely because the HTTP request succeeded.

Timeouts, bot checks or CAPTCHAs
Retry with bounded backoff, preserve the error response, and consider whether the rendering location is blocked. A retry cannot turn an unauthorized or challenged page into valid evidence.

Set explicit viewport dimensions, device preset and pixel scale. Use a selector for the post itself and compare a test capture at each required breakpoint.

- Cache only when the capture’s freshness requirement permits it, and record the cache decision.
- Store URL, final URL, UTC time, viewport, wait condition, provider, HTTP status and content hash.
- Separate structured API data from the screenshot artifact.
- Review X’s current Developer Agreement, Developer Policy, automation guidance and Terms of Service before operating at scale.
- Capture only content and accounts you are authorized to access.

Can a screenshot API capture deleted X posts?
No. If X no longer serves the post to the renderer, the API cannot recreate it; use an authorized archive if one exists.
Why keep JSON and an image together?
JSON supports search and analysis, while the image preserves the rendered visual arrangement and media presentation.
