A Cloudflare Worker can provide a small HTTP endpoint that accepts a page URL, calls Cloudflare Browser Rendering’s Screenshot API, and returns the resulting image. You’ll need a Cloudflare API token with Browser Rendering Write permission, and you should keep that token in a Worker secret rather than expose it to callers. This guide shows the request flow, the security decisions to make before making it public, and the documented capture options.
How the screenshot flow works
Your Worker receives a request, validates the requested page and capture settings, then makes an authenticated server-side request to Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering API. The API route is POST /accounts/{account_id}/browser-rendering/screenshot; it accepts either a website URL or supplied HTML. The Worker can return the image response to its caller. See Cloudflare’s Screenshot endpoint documentation for the current request and response details.
This keeps the Cloudflare API token out of browser-delivered code. Create an API token with the narrowest suitable permissions, including Browser Rendering Write, and store it as a Worker secret. Do not accept arbitrary destinations without controls: a public endpoint that fetches caller-selected URLs can be abused as an open proxy. Restrict allowed destinations and validate inputs for your use case.

1. Create credentials and configure the Worker
In Cloudflare, create an API token that has Browser Rendering Write permission. Configure the Worker with the account ID and token as server-side values; use Worker secrets for sensitive credentials. Do not place the token in client-side JavaScript, query strings, or a response returned to the caller.

2. Validate the incoming request
Decide which URLs the endpoint may capture before forwarding anything to the API. For example, an internal tool might allow only a known set of hostnames. Reject malformed URLs and unsupported schemes, and avoid turning the Worker into a general-purpose proxy. Also validate requested image types, viewport dimensions, selectors, and timeouts against the values your application intends to support.
3. Call the Screenshot API and relay the result
Send a POST request to the documented account endpoint with a bearer token and a JSON body containing the URL or HTML plus supported capture settings. Return the image bytes and an appropriate content type to your caller when the API succeeds. If the API returns an error, pass back a useful status and safe error detail rather than treating the response as an image.

The exact request-body fields and response behavior should follow Cloudflare’s live endpoint reference, since API schemas can change. In particular, confirm how the chosen encoding is represented before implementing binary response handling.
Choose capture settings for the page
Cloudflare documents settings for viewport dimensions, full-page capture, clipping, image type, response encoding, selector waiting, wait timeouts, and blocking requests or resource types. Choose only the controls needed for the result; full-page capture and long waits can make a request more demanding than a viewport screenshot.

Use Screenshot or Snapshot?
Use the Screenshot endpoint when the output you need is an image. If the workflow also needs page content, Cloudflare’s related Snapshot endpoint can return a screenshot together with page HTML, and can also return Markdown or an accessibility tree. Understand the different limits
Cloudflare announced on March 4, 2026 that the Browser Rendering REST API rate limit for Workers Paid plans increased from 3 requests per second (180 per minute) to 10 requests per second (600 per minute). This is an API rate limit, not a promise that an individual capture finishes within a particular time.

Worker runtime limits are separate. Cloudflare’s Workers limits page, last updated September 5, 2026, lists 10 ms CPU time on Workers Free and 5 minutes on Workers Paid, with 128 MB memory on both. Those are Worker account-plan limits and should not be confused with Browser Rendering API request rates. Check the current Browser Rendering rate-limit announcement and Workers limits page when sizing a deployment.
