For a quick image of what is visible, press Windows+Shift+S and select an area, window, or screen. To capture an entire webpage—including content below the fold—use Microsoft Edge DevTools and its Capture a full size screenshot command. The right method depends on whether you need the display, the browser window, or the whole rendered page.

Choose the capture that matches your goal

Need Windows method Result
Quick selection or markup Windows+Shift+S (Snipping Tool) Rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip
Active browser window copied to the clipboard Alt+Print Screen The currently active window

Browser-native web or PDF capture with annotation Edge Screenshot (formerly Web Capture) Web or PDF content, subject to browser and organization policy

Take a visible-area screenshot with Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool is built into supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations. It captures pixels currently displayed on your monitor; a normal snip does not automatically scroll through a long webpage.

  1. Open the website and arrange the browser so the content you want is visible.
  2. Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears.
  3. Choose a mode: Rectangular for a precise box, Freeform for an irregular shape, Window for a browser window, or Full screen for the entire display.
  4. For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the page area. For Window, select the browser window; for Full screen, select the display if prompted.
  5. Open the notification or Snipping Tool window to annotate, crop, copy, save, or share the result. Microsoft documents Ctrl+C for copying and Ctrl+S for saving.

New captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default. Snipping Tool settings let you change automatic-save behavior or location. If you only need to paste the image into another application, use the clipboard copy instead of saving a file.

When to use Full screen versus Window

A full-screen snip records the display, including anything else visible on that monitor. A window snip targets the selected browser window, but browser chrome and overlapping-window behavior can vary. If you need only the webpage itself, use an Edge full-page workflow instead.

Capture the active browser window with Alt+Print Screen

Microsoft’s Windows shortcut reference lists Alt+Print Screen for capturing the active window and copying it to the clipboard. Click the browser first so it is active, press the shortcut, then paste into Paint, an editor, an email, or another application.

Print Screen behavior can differ because Windows settings or an application may assign the key to screen snipping. If Alt+Print Screen does not produce the expected image, use Windows+Shift+S and choose Window mode. Laptop keyboards may also require an Fn modifier.

Capture an entire webpage in Edge DevTools

Use this route when “full page” means the complete rendered document rather than the visible monitor. It is available through Microsoft Edge DevTools and is separate from a full-screen Snipping Tool capture.

  1. Open the page in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Open DevTools by right-clicking the page and choosing Inspect, or pressing Ctrl+Shift+I.
  3. Turn on Device Emulation with the device-toolbar button, or from the DevTools menu.
  4. In the device-emulation toolbar, open More options.
  5. Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
  6. Wait for Edge to create the image, then save it from the download prompt or your normal download location.

The command is specifically intended to include page content outside the current viewport. Select a viewport width that matches the layout you want; changing the emulated width can trigger a different responsive design.

Dynamic pages and lazy-loaded content

Full-size capture is based on what Edge has rendered. A page that loads sections only after scrolling, requires a click, embeds cross-origin frames, or continually updates may not appear exactly as expected. Before capturing, wait for visible content to finish loading and check the resulting image. If a section is missing, capture that section separately or use the page’s own controls to reveal it first. The documented command does not guarantee identical output for every dynamic site.

Use Edge Screenshot (formerly Web Capture)

Edge also has a user-facing Screenshot feature for web and PDF content. Microsoft documentation identifies it as the successor to Web Capture and lists Ctrl+Shift+S as its shortcut when enabled. You can also find it in the context menu or in Edge’s Settings and more menu.

Use Screenshot when you want browser-native annotation and a quick selection. It is not a promise of a full scrolling webpage image; for content below the fold, use DevTools’ full-size command. On managed computers, an administrator can disable the feature through Edge policy. Microsoft’s policy documentation covers Windows support from Edge version 87 onward, so an older or managed installation may show different menus.

Make the capture readable and reproducible

Set the page before you capture

  • Dismiss consent dialogs, newsletter prompts, and chat windows that cover important content.
  • Set the browser zoom and window width deliberately; responsive layouts can change at different widths.
  • For a long page, allow images and fonts to finish loading before invoking full-size capture.
  • Sign in only when the page is permitted to be captured and your organization’s policy allows it.

Choose an output workflow

  • Use the clipboard for a one-off paste into a document or message.
  • Save a PNG when you need lossless text and interface detail.
  • Annotate in Snipping Tool when arrows, highlights, or redactions are part of the deliverable.
  • For repeatable documentation, record the URL, viewport width, date, and whether the image was viewport-only or full-page.

Common problems and fixes

Windows+Shift+S does nothing

Check that the keyboard shortcut reaches Windows rather than a remote-desktop client or keyboard utility. Open Snipping Tool from Start as a test, then use its New button. On a managed computer, application restrictions or a disabled service may affect the shortcut.

The image shows only the visible screen

That is normal for a standard snip. A full-screen snip means the display, not a scrolling webpage. Open Edge DevTools, enable Device Emulation, and choose Capture a full size screenshot.

Alt+Print Screen captures the wrong thing

Click the browser window to make it active and try again. If Print Screen is mapped to screen snipping or your keyboard requires Fn, switch to Windows+Shift+S and Window mode.

Capture a full size screenshot is missing

Confirm DevTools is open and Device Emulation is enabled, then look under More options in the emulation toolbar. A different Edge build, a changed DevTools layout, or enterprise restrictions can alter the menu. Update Edge if your organization permits it.

The full-page image is incomplete or oddly spaced

Reload the page, wait for network activity and fonts to settle, and capture again. Scroll through the page once to trigger lazy-loaded sections. If the page still changes while capturing, take section captures or use a stable print/PDF view when the site provides one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edge Screenshot is unavailable

Use the context menu or Settings and more menu to verify the feature is enabled. On a work device, an administrator may have disabled Screenshot/Web Capture through policy. DevTools remains the documented alternative for a full-size page image when policy allows DevTools.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo

If you need repeatable captures from scripts, CI jobs, or many URLs, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one HTTP request. It can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The examples below use the supplied API endpoint and save the returned WebP bytes.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

Options for automation

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector or delay or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes.

For reliability, check the verdict and billing headers, set a timeout appropriate to the page, and use caching when the source does not change often. For a public image tag, use a signed link rather than exposing your API key. The MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can perform captures without you wiring a browser.
