To capture a website as it appears in another country, first identify which location signal the site uses. Playwright can emulate browser-reported geolocation, locale, and timezone, but it does not change your public IP address. If the site personalizes by IP, you need a browser or screenshot service whose network traffic actually originates in the target country. A country field in an API request is not, by itself, proof of that.
Choose the location signal before choosing a screenshot tool
“From another country” can mean several different things to a website. A site may select content using the visitor’s public IP address, browser-reported HTML5 geolocation, preferred language, timezone, or a combination. Those signals are independent: setting a browser coordinate does not route its network traffic through that location, and changing the language does not establish a regional IP.
- Public IP: The server or an upstream service maps the request’s network address to a region. You need a network route that exits in the target country.
- Browser geolocation: A page that requests HTML5 geolocation may receive coordinates provided by the browser. Automation can grant permission and emulate coordinates.
- Locale and language: These can affect translated text, number formats, and language negotiation. They do not prove the request came from that country.
- Timezone: A page may use the browser’s timezone when displaying dates or making client-side decisions. This is separate from the server’s view of the public IP.
If you do not know which signal controls the page, change one at a time and compare results. Keep the URL, browser, viewport, and page state constant; otherwise, you will not know which change caused the difference.

Use Playwright when you need repeatable browser-side testing and the page responds to geolocation, locale, or timezone settings. The example below uses Node.js and Chromium. It grants geolocation permission, supplies coordinates, and saves a full-page PNG. The coordinates are only an example; replace them with coordinates appropriate to the location you are testing.

Install Playwright

}Run it with node screenshot.mjs https://example.com. The output is capture.png. In a real test, use the target page’s relevant content selector instead of relying on the body being visible; a visible body does not guarantee that an application has finished loading its localized content.
What these settings do—and do not do
The browser context reports the specified locale, timezone, and coordinates to browser-side code. The permission grant matters: without it, a page requesting location can be denied instead of receiving the emulated coordinates. These settings do not make the network request originate in France or any other selected country. If the server chooses content from the public IP, this local setup will not reproduce the target country’s IP-based response.

For reliable comparisons, capture the baseline and the regional variant using the same machine, operating system, browser version, headless setting, viewport, and other browser options. Rendering can vary across host environments, so a visual difference is not necessarily caused by localization.

Method 2: Use a hosted capture service only after checking its location behavior
A hosted browser can simplify scheduled or remote captures, but “hosted” does not automatically mean “country-specific.” Verify which location signal the service changes, which countries it supports, and whether its browser traffic actually exits through the requested country.

These are distinct controls; custom coordinates are not evidence that the target server sees a request from that region.
For any provider, check support for the target country, network origin, browser geolocation, locale and timezone controls, page interaction, authenticated states, viewport and element selection, and how the service handles bot checks. If the provider does not clearly state what its country control changes, ask before using the result as evidence of regional availability or compliance.
A practical workflow for repeatable captures
- Define the question. Decide whether you are checking IP-based content, browser geolocation, language, timezone, or several signals together.
- Record a baseline. Capture the page with default settings and note the URL, date and time, browser version, viewport, and visible state.
- Change one signal. For browser-side testing, change the relevant Playwright context setting. For an IP-based test, use a confirmed regional network route or a service that documents the route you need.
- Wait for the intended page state. Navigation completion may occur before a JavaScript application has populated the content. Wait for a meaningful selector, or for network activity to settle when that is appropriate for the page.
- Choose the capture area. Use a viewport screenshot to capture what a visitor sees at a particular screen size, a full-page screenshot for the complete document, or a specific element when only one component matters.
- Repeat and log the setup. Record the location signal and values, whether a regional network route was used, capture time, browser and version, viewport, and any page interaction. This makes later comparisons interpretable.
For long pages, full-page capture can expose content below the fold, but it is not interchangeable with a viewport capture: the two answer different visual questions. For pages with lazy-loaded images, scrolling or another page-specific wait may be needed before capturing; verify the resulting image rather than assuming all content loaded.

Troubleshooting incomplete or misleading results
- The page still shows the original country’s offer. The site may be using your public IP rather than browser coordinates. Use a confirmed network route in the target country and keep browser settings controlled.
- A geolocation prompt appears or location is unavailable. Grant geolocation permission in the Playwright context and set coordinates. Check that the page actually requests browser geolocation; coordinates have no effect on pages that do not use it.
- The language changed but prices or availability did not. Locale can affect language and formatting without changing IP-based pricing or inventory. Test the signal that controls the specific content.
- The screenshot is blank or missing an application panel. The capture may have happened before client-side rendering completed, or the page may have failed. Wait for a selector that marks the content as ready and inspect the final capture. A longer generic delay is less reliable than waiting for the needed state.
- A service rejects the page or shows a bot check. A configurable user agent does not necessarily bypass bot protection. Respect the site’s access controls and use a provider only if it supports the required access legitimately.
- Two screenshots differ despite identical settings. Verify browser version, operating system, font availability, headless mode, power state, viewport, and page content timing. Keep the rendering environment fixed for visual regression work.
- A full-page capture looks unlike what a visitor sees. Compare it with a viewport capture and check for sticky elements, lazy loading, or responsive breakpoints. Set the intended viewport explicitly and ensure below-fold content has loaded.
What to compare when choosing a method
