To capture Android web traffic, choose the method that matches what you need to inspect: use Android Studio Network Inspector for supported requests from your own app, or route browser or app traffic through an HTTPS-intercepting proxy such as mitmproxy. For HTTPS contents, the client must trust the proxy’s certificate authority; seeing a connection or packets alone does not reveal encrypted request and response bodies. If an app bypasses the Android system proxy or rejects its certificate, change the capture method or use a debug-only trust configuration in an app you own or are authorized to test.
Choose the capture method by scope
There is no single Android traffic viewer that exposes everything. The right starting point depends on whether you are debugging your own app, inspecting a browser session, or observing an app that ignores proxy settings. An HTTPS proxy can show readable flows only when traffic passes through it and the client accepts its certificate. A lower-level capture may reveal connections and packet metadata without decrypting HTTPS.
| Method | Best for | What it can show | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Studio Network Inspector | Your own debuggable app | Supported app requests and data transfers | App-focused; unsupported request types may not be identified. |
| Android System Proxy with a debugging CA | Browser or emulator traffic, and apps that honor the system proxy | HTTP and, after certificate trust is established, HTTPS flows | Certificate policy or pinning can prevent decryption. |
| mitmproxy regular proxy | Interactive inspection, replay, or modification | HTTP(S) flows routed through the proxy when the client trusts its CA | Some Android apps bypass operating-system proxy settings. |
| mitmproxy TUN or another lower-level capture | Apps that bypass an HTTP proxy, or broader packet observation | Network traffic at a lower layer; visibility depends on protocol and encryption | Observing packets does not by itself decrypt HTTPS payloads. |
| adb-assisted physical-device workflow | Connecting a real phone to a computer for debugging and capture-tool workflows | Device connection, logs, forwarding, and support for other tools | Requires USB debugging authorization and a compatible data connection. |
For your own app: start in Android Studio
Open View > Tool Windows > App Inspection, then select Network Inspector and inspect the app while it makes requests. Android describes this tool as a way to examine how and when an app transfers data. It is the narrowest and usually simplest option when you control the app and want to debug supported app-level requests, rather than capture every device connection. An empty or incomplete view does not prove that the app made no network requests: the inspector may not identify unsupported request types.

For browser or broad HTTP(S) inspection: use a proxy
For a browser session or an emulator, configure Android’s System Proxy to send traffic to a listening interception tool. Android’s emulator guidance describes this debugging proxy for tools such as Charles and distinguishes it from the lower-level emulator proxy. If you need HTTPS request or response contents, install and trust the proxy’s CA certificate on the emulated device or phone as required by the tool and Android configuration. Merely seeing a connection in the proxy is not evidence that TLS has been decrypted.

For an app that ignores the proxy
Some Android apps do not use the operating-system HTTP proxy settings. A conventional proxy can therefore show no flows even though the app is online. mitmproxy documents TUN mode as an option for traffic that bypasses a regular proxy. A lower-level capture can also help establish where traffic is going, but it may show only packet-level information or encrypted endpoints, not readable HTTPS content.
Capture traffic from an Android emulator
- Start with the question you need answered. If you are testing your own app and need supported request-level detail, use Android Studio Network Inspector. For a browser or wider HTTP(S) inspection, use an interception proxy and the Android System Proxy.
- Start the proxy on your computer. Use your chosen tool’s documented listening configuration, and note the address and port it reports. The emulator must be able to reach that listener; a host address that works for a physical phone is not necessarily the correct address from inside an emulator.
- Point the emulator’s Android System Proxy at the listener. Set its proxy host and port using the emulator’s system-proxy controls. Labels and available controls can differ between Android versions and emulator images, so use the controls for the image you are running rather than assuming a universal menu path.
- Install and trust the proxy CA when HTTPS contents matter. Follow the interception tool’s Android instructions. Then generate a test request from the browser or app and check that the proxy displays the request and its response. If only the connection appears, troubleshoot trust and app policy before concluding the proxy is broken.
- Remove temporary interception settings after testing. Restore the normal proxy configuration and remove test certificates that are no longer needed. Do not leave a test trust configuration in a release build.
For an emulator, a USB cable is not inherently needed: the emulator and the proxy can communicate over the computer’s network setup. The important conditions are reachability to the listening proxy, use of the system proxy by the traffic source, and trust of the CA if you need HTTPS contents.

Use a physical Android phone
A real phone can be the target for the same broad approach: run the proxy on a computer, configure the phone to use it, and install the proxy CA if HTTPS decryption is required. Device menus vary, so the dependable details are the proxy listener address and port, the phone’s network connection to that listener, and the certificate trust state—not a fixed sequence of menu labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Enable developer options and USB debugging if you need the computer-to-device workflow supported by Android Debug Bridge (adb). Approve the debugging authorization prompt on the phone when it appears.
- Use a data-capable USB connection. A cable that supplies power only will not provide the computer-to-device data connection needed for adb. Confirm that the device is authorized before using adb-supported debugging or retrieval workflows.
- Configure the phone’s proxy and certificate trust for the particular capture tool and test. ADB can assist with device debugging and other workflows, but connecting by cable does not decrypt TLS and does not make an app honor the system proxy.
- Exercise the app or browser and check the capture. If there are no flows, determine whether the phone can reach the proxy and whether the app uses the OS proxy. If flows appear but HTTPS bodies remain unreadable, investigate CA trust and app certificate policy.
So, no: a USB cable is not required for every way of capturing traffic. It is useful for a physical-device adb workflow; it is not a requirement for inspecting emulator traffic through a proxy, and it is never a substitute for certificate trust.

Why HTTPS contents may stay encrypted
TLS protects HTTPS traffic between a client and server. An interception proxy can decrypt traffic by presenting certificates that the client accepts, then establishing its own connection onward. mitmproxy’s documentation states that decryption works when the client trusts mitmproxy’s built-in certificate authority. If that trust is missing, the proxy may reveal connection attempts or fail the request, while the HTTPS body remains unavailable.
Check which certificate store the app accepts
Android apps may not trust certificates installed by a user. In that case, installing a proxy CA as a user certificate may be insufficient for that app. mitmproxy’s Android guidance describes placing its CA in the system certificate store for applications that require system-store trust. That route is appropriate for a controlled emulator or test device; it is not a general recommendation to weaken a personal phone’s security.

Use a debug-only trust override for an app you control
Android Network Security Configuration supports <debug-overrides> trust anchors for debug builds. Android explains that certificate pinning is not performed when the certificate chain uses a qualifying debug trust anchor. Configure this only in the debug configuration of an app you own or are authorized to test; preserve the production trust and pinning policy in release builds. If you do not control the app, do not try to defeat its certificate policy—use permitted diagnostics or ask the app owner for a test build.
Distinguish certificate failure from proxy bypass
- If the app’s request fails as soon as interception is enabled, certificate rejection or pinning is a plausible cause.
- If the app works but the proxy records no corresponding flow, it may bypass the OS proxy or use a request type the chosen inspector does not support.
- If the proxy shows a flow but only connection details, TLS may still be encrypted because the client does not trust the proxy CA.
These symptoms overlap, so change one variable at a time: first establish that traffic reaches the proxy, then test certificate trust with a browser or controlled app, and finally account for the target app’s network security policy.

Troubleshoot missing or unreadable traffic
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No traffic appears in the proxy | Wrong proxy host or port, proxy not listening, device cannot reach the host, or app bypasses OS proxy settings | Verify the listener and device proxy values first. Test a browser that honors the system proxy. If only the app is missing, consider mitmproxy TUN mode or lower-level capture. |
| Connections appear, but HTTPS contents are unreadable | The client does not trust the proxy CA, or the app rejects the interception certificate | Install the CA in the certificate store accepted by the client. For your own app, check its debug network security configuration and pinning policy. |
| HTTPS browsing fails after installing the CA | The app or browser may still reject the certificate, or the proxy configuration may be wrong | Check trust placement and network security policy; verify the proxy listener and address. Do not disable production safeguards to make an unauthorized app interceptable. |
| Network Inspector is empty or incomplete | The traffic source or request type may not be supported by that inspector | Confirm the app is making a request during inspection. Use a proxy or packet-level approach if you need broader coverage. |
| Physical phone is not detected by adb | USB debugging is off or not authorized, or the cable does not carry data | Enable USB debugging, approve the computer on the phone, and use a compatible data-capable cable. The adb documentation is the reference for the bridge and device workflow. |
| Packet capture shows destinations but not readable bodies | HTTPS encryption is intact; packet observation is not TLS decryption | Use an authorized interception method with trusted CA configuration if plaintext inspection is required. Otherwise treat the capture as network metadata, not request contents. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not an Android network-traffic capture tool; it cannot show HTTP headers, API payloads, or decrypted HTTPS flows. It can help when the actual task is to capture a rendered web page. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; for example, use this cURL call with a target page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. Before the capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
