To capture video with Snagit, open the Capture Window, choose the Video tab, select a region, window, or entire screen, set your microphone and system-audio options, then click Record. Stop when you are done; review and trim the clip in Snagit Editor, then export it as an MP4 or GIF or share it through a supported destination.

Choose what Snagit will record

Snagit lets you set the capture area before recording. Choose the scope that shows the material you need without exposing unrelated windows or notifications.

  • Custom region: Drag to select a portion of the screen. Use this for a focused walkthrough or when you want to keep private desktop areas out of the recording.
  • Window: Capture one application window. This is useful for a software demonstration that stays in a single app.
  • Entire screen: Record the full display when you need to show movement between applications or across the desktop. Check the visible desktop first for notifications or other information you do not want to include.

Capture area, presenter presence, and audio are separate choices: a video can show only the screen, include a webcam picture-in-picture, and record microphone audio, computer audio, or both.

Record your screen, microphone, and system audio

  1. Open the Snagit Capture Window.
  2. Select the Video tab.
  3. Choose a custom region, a window, or the entire screen.
  4. Select the microphone if you want narration. To record sound playing from the computer, turn on System Audio. Enable both if the recording needs your voice and the computer’s sound.
  5. Optionally enable a webcam to add a picture-in-picture view. Snagit also supports an external camera.
  6. Click Record, then perform the walkthrough or play material you are permitted to record.
  7. Stop the recording when finished. Review it in Snagit Editor, trim unwanted sections, and combine clips if needed.
  8. Export as MP4 for ordinary video playback or GIF for a short looping demonstration. Add live or post-capture annotations and share using a link or a supported cloud destination if useful.

Before an important recording, make a short test clip and play it back. Confirm that the selected area is correct, the microphone is audible, and system sound is present if required. This catches a wrong input selection before you record a longer walkthrough.

Add a webcam or record webcam-first

Enable the webcam in the Video capture setup for a picture-in-picture presenter view alongside the screen. A webcam can make a tutorial feel more personal while keeping the application visible. An external camera is supported, which can help if you want a different camera position than the computer’s built-in one.

If a recording becomes slow or unstable with the webcam enabled, try disabling it and recording the screen alone. The webcam adds another active capture device, so removing it is a useful troubleshooting step before changing the whole recording workflow. Snagit’s webcam features also include virtual backgrounds in the 2025 release notes; available controls can depend on your installed version.

Choose MP4, GIF, or a fuller editor

Use MP4 for a normal video that viewers can play, pause, and share. GIF is better suited to a brief looping action or interface demonstration; it is not a substitute for a narrated video. Snagit’s built-in editing is aimed at quick instructional work: trim a clip, combine clips, draw on the screen during capture, annotate after capture, and share the result.

If you need a more involved multitrack post-production workflow, Camtasia Editor is the fuller editing option identified in TechSmith’s product context. The practical distinction is quick capture and light editing in Snagit versus moving into a dedicated editor for a more elaborate timeline. Pick based on what the finished video needs, rather than assuming every screen recording requires a full editing suite.

Can Snagit record a YouTube video?

Snagit can record what is displayed on the screen and audio supplied by the selected devices, but that does not establish permission to copy or redistribute someone else’s video. Check the content owner’s terms and the applicable rules before recording third-party material. Some streaming sites and media solutions use HDCP to prevent unauthorized recording; TechSmith Support says, “Some sites and media solutions may adhere to HDCP protocols to prevent the unauthorized recording of protected content.” Snagit does not promise to bypass HDCP or other service restrictions.

For a tutorial you own or have permission to make, record the relevant screen area and select System Audio if the computer’s sound needs to be included. If a protected stream produces a blank or unavailable capture, respect the restriction rather than attempting to defeat it.

Fix lag, dropped frames, audio problems, and blank previews

TechSmith documents out-of-sync video, dropped frames, poor performance, distorted audio, encoding errors, and blank or initializing previews as known problem patterns. Work through the relevant checks below, changing one setting at a time so you can see whether it helps.

Check whether the computer meets video requirements

For current Windows guidance, TechSmith lists an Intel 8th-generation-or-newer or AMD Ryzen 2000-series-or-newer CPU for video recording, recommends 8 GB RAM, and lists 1.6 GB of disk space for installation. These are Windows-specific published requirements, not universal hardware guidance for every operating system or future release. Check TechSmith’s current system requirements for your Snagit version if you are on another platform or edition.

Reduce capture load

  • Disable the webcam and record the screen alone to see whether the additional camera load is contributing to lag.
  • Lower video quality if performance remains poor.
  • Close unnecessary applications that are competing for system resources, then make a short test recording.

Check audio-device initialization

For missing, distorted, or out-of-sync audio, verify that the intended microphone and system-audio option are selected and that the devices are available before recording. If a preview stays blank or appears to be initializing, check the selected camera and audio devices, then restart the capture setup and test again.

Test hardware acceleration and encoding

If recording has dropped frames, poor performance, or encoding errors, TechSmith’s guidance includes disabling hardware-accelerated recording when appropriate. Test with that setting changed and compare a short clip. If the problem began after a setting change, restore the previous configuration when testing does not improve the result.

Use the symptom to narrow the next step

  • Screen video lags or drops frames: Check system requirements, disable the webcam, lower video quality, and test hardware-accelerated recording settings.
  • Microphone or system sound is missing: Confirm the correct device and audio option are selected before recording; verify them in a short playback test.
  • Audio is distorted or out of sync: Check device selection and initialization, then make a short test with only the necessary audio sources enabled.
  • Preview is blank or stuck initializing: Check the selected camera and audio devices and whether the content is protected by HDCP; protected content may not be recordable.
  • Encoding error: Reduce capture load and test the hardware-acceleration setting; confirm that the computer has the required resources.

Share the finished recording

After editing, choose a distribution method that matches the audience. Snagit supports share links and destinations including Screencast, Google Drive, Dropbox, and YouTube. Availability and account requirements can vary by destination. For a short action that should loop inline, export a GIF; for a narrated explanation or longer demonstration, use MP4. TechSmith’s 2025 release notes describe customizable share links, so check the controls in your installed release when configuring a link.

Price and version context

TechSmith’s store page showed a Snagit-in-Camtasia bundle starting at $39.00 per user per year billed yearly when accessed on September 29, 2026. That is a dated price snapshot, not a guaranteed current offer; check the store before purchase. Snagit 2025 release notes describe annual subscriptions for individuals and businesses, background-noise removal, customizable share links, webcam virtual backgrounds, and screen-draw updates. Features and interface labels can vary by release, so consult the release notes and help for the version installed on your computer.
