Use Window when the demonstration spans one browser window, or Full Screen when it spans several windows. Extensions such as Screencastify and Loom handle recording, microphone narration, and post-capture editing without requiring a separate desktop recorder.
What you need before recording
- Google Chrome on a computer that permits screen capture.
- A recorder extension, such as Screencastify or Loom, installed from the Chrome Web Store.
- Permission to record and, when needed, permission to use your microphone.
- Rights to record and redistribute the website video. A recording tool does not override copyright, subscription, DRM, or site terms.
Close private tabs, disable distracting notifications, and decide whether your recording needs narration. A USB microphone is optional; Screencastify supports microphone narration, and an external microphone can make voice-over clearer.
Record a website video step by step
- Install and open the recorder. Add Screencastify or Loom to Chrome, then select its toolbar icon. If the icon is hidden, open Chrome’s Extensions menu and pin it.
- Prepare the page. Open the exact video, set its starting point, choose the desired quality, and close overlays that should not appear. Put the browser at the size you want viewers to see.
- Choose the narrowest capture scope. Select Current Tab (also labeled This Tab) for one website. Select Window for one browser or application window. Select Full Screen only when the demonstration crosses multiple windows or displays.
- Choose audio. Enable microphone audio for narration. If the extension offers tab or system audio, enable it when you need the website player’s sound; otherwise you may record only your voice or silent video. Check the extension’s audio labels before starting.
- Approve Chrome’s chooser. Chrome’s screen-capture API opens a dialog asking whether to share a tab, window, or screen. Select the intended source and confirm. Check Chrome’s sharing indicator so you know which surface is being recorded.
- Start and perform the demonstration. Begin recording, play the website video, and keep the pointer and narration deliberate. Avoid switching to unrelated tabs when using Current Tab.
- Stop recording. Use the extension’s stop control or Chrome’s sharing indicator. Wait for the recording to finish processing before closing the tab.
- Edit and export. Screencastify documents browser-based trimming, annotation, sharing, and export to MP4, GIF, or MP3. Loom provides editing, privacy settings, and sharing controls. The exact buttons and limits can change as extensions are updated.
Which capture scope should you use?

For a normal website player, Current Tab produces the cleanest result and limits accidental disclosure. Use Full Screen only when the wider context is part of the lesson.
How Chrome captures the tab
Chrome exposes two relevant mechanisms. getDisplayMedia() asks the user to select a tab, window, or screen and returns a media stream for recording. An extension can also use chrome.tabCapture to target the active tab after a user gesture, including tab audio and video.

Since Chrome 116, an extension service worker can request a tab-capture stream ID after that gesture and pass it to an offscreen document that performs the recording. This architecture is useful when recording must continue while the extension’s popup closes or the page navigates. A popup-only recorder is fragile because opening another surface can remove focus and close the popup.
What this means for you
- You should always expect a permission chooser for screen or window capture.
- A tab recorder can include the player’s audio only when tab-audio capture is enabled and the page supplies audio.
- Navigation persistence depends on the extension’s implementation; do not assume a recording survives a page change unless its documentation says it does.

The Chrome Web Store listing identifies Screencastify as having more than 15 million people using it (listing dated 2026). That figure is a listing claim, not a guarantee of performance or availability. Extension versions, limits, privacy behavior, and plan terms can change, so verify the current screens before a production workflow.
Recording website audio correctly
Player sound
Choose tab or system audio when the recorder offers it, then test with a ten-second clip. Some sites mute playback until you interact with the page; click the player and confirm its volume before recording.
Your narration
Enable the microphone separately. Speak close to the microphone, monitor input levels if shown, and perform a short test so you can detect clipping, echo, or the wrong microphone.

Both at once
When you need player sound and narration, select both audio sources if the extension supports that combination. Headphones can prevent the player audio from feeding back into the microphone.
Navigation, popups, and protected pages
If the video navigates to another URL, a Current Tab stream may continue or may end depending on the extension and capture API path. For a workflow that must persist, use an extension designed around tab capture and an offscreen recording document rather than a popup-only implementation.
Popup-based capture can stop when the popup loses focus. Start from the extension’s tab or screen workflow, not from a tiny control window that must remain open. Banking pages, DRM players, enterprise policies, and browser-managed content can refuse capture; no extension can guarantee recording of a surface that Chrome or the site blocks.
Troubleshooting
The wrong tab or window was recorded
Stop, reopen the recorder, and select Current Tab or the exact window in Chrome’s chooser. Confirm the sharing indicator before playing the video.

There is no website audio
Repeat the capture and enable tab/system audio. Check the player’s mute button, Chrome’s site sound setting, and the selected output device. A microphone toggle captures your voice, not necessarily the player.
The recording stopped when you changed tabs
That is expected for some Current Tab implementations. Use Window or Full Screen for a multi-tab demonstration, or choose a recorder that documents navigation-persistent tab capture.
The extension popup disappeared
Popup focus can close the popup and interrupt capture. Start recording through the extension’s main tab-capture or screen-capture command.
The video is black or blocked
Test another permitted page, update Chrome and the extension, and check organizational capture policies. DRM, protected video surfaces, bot checks, and site restrictions may prevent pixels from being exposed to an extension.

The file is too large or processing is slow
Trim unused footage, record only the needed scope, and allow processing to finish before closing Chrome. Longer, higher-resolution recordings require more local storage and upload time.

Quality and privacy checklist
- Record a short test and verify both picture and audio.
- Use Current Tab unless the demonstration genuinely needs a window or full screen.
- Hide notifications, passwords, personal messages, and unrelated tabs.
- Confirm the sharing indicator and stop recording explicitly.
- Trim dead time, then review the exported file from a viewer’s perspective.
- Keep recordings private until you have checked permissions, licenses, and sensitive content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I record only the video player instead of the whole tab?
Most Chrome recorder extensions capture a tab, window, or screen rather than an arbitrary player rectangle. If you need only the player, maximize or crop it before recording, then trim the result.
Will viewers hear protected streaming audio?
Not always. Browser policy, DRM, the site, and the selected audio source can prevent tab audio from being captured. Test a short clip before making the full recording.
Does recording a tab notify the website owner?
Chrome’s capture permission is local to your browser, but a site can still enforce its own terms, DRM, or technical restrictions. Check permission before publishing.
