The right way to capture Twitch at scale depends on whose content you are preserving. For your own broadcasts, enable Twitch VOD storage before going live, export the saved videos from Video Producer, and maintain an archive you control. For a channel that has authorized your clipping workflow, use Twitch’s Clips API with the required OAuth scope, poll for completion, and download each clip promptly. Twitch does not document a general bulk-download API for arbitrary live channels, and its Terms restrict downloading and automated extraction except where Twitch expressly permits them.
First define what “capture” means
“Capture Twitch streams” can describe three different jobs:
- Record your own live broadcast: save a local recording while your encoder sends the stream to Twitch.
- Archive your own Twitch VODs: let Twitch save the broadcast, then download it from Video Producer before retention expires.
- Create authorized clips: call Twitch’s Clips API for a live channel where you have the broadcaster’s permission and the required account access.
These are not interchangeable. The Clips API is not a full-stream recorder: one request attempts to capture a window of up to 90 seconds around the request, and the published clip is between 5 and 60 seconds. Twitch’s ingest documentation describes sending an encoder’s RTMP contribution into Twitch; it is not an API for recording arbitrary channels. Do not treat scraping or unofficial downloaders as an endorsed Twitch workflow.
Choose an authorized architecture
| Workflow | Source | What it preserves | Scale considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local recording during your broadcast | Your encoder or broadcast software | A complete local file, if recording is enabled and storage remains available | Capacity is determined by hours, bitrate, number of channels and retention period |
| VOD export | Twitch Video Producer | A saved Twitch broadcast while the VOD exists | Enable storage first; export before the account’s retention window ends |
| Authorized Clips API | Twitch live channel and Clips API | 5–60 second clips created from an up-to-90-second capture window | Use OAuth, polling, pagination, time windows and prompt retrieval of temporary URLs |
For a durable archive, many broadcasters use more than one path: local recording protects against a missing or expired VOD, while VOD export and clips provide Twitch-native copies and shareable moments. That combination is an operational recommendation, not a Twitch storage guarantee.

Preserve your own full broadcasts
Enable VOD storage before the stream
Twitch must be allowed to save past broadcasts. If storage was disabled, the stream did not save, or the retention period has elapsed, Twitch Support says it cannot recover the VOD. Turn the setting on before your next broadcast and confirm it is active in the channel’s creator settings. A setting changed after the stream cannot recreate an earlier recording.
Know the documented retention windows
| Broadcaster category | Documented VOD retention |
|---|---|
| Partners, Prime and Turbo users | 60 days |
| Affiliates | 14 days |
| Other broadcasters | 7 days |
These are the periods listed on Twitch’s current On-Demand Content help page, accessed September 29, 2026. Treat them as documentation, not a promise that a VOD will remain available until the final minute; deletion, account changes and policy updates can affect availability.
Export from Video Producer
- Open Twitch Creator Dashboard and go to Content → Video Producer.
- Filter or sort to find the saved broadcast.
- Open the item’s action menu and choose the available download option.
- Verify the resulting file by opening it and checking duration, audio and resolution.
- Move a verified copy to storage you control, then create a second copy if the recording matters.
Twitch’s help documentation establishes the review, clip, highlight and download functions. It does not specify a required drive, NAS or cloud provider. Estimate capacity from your actual recording hours, encoder bitrate, number of channels and the number of retention periods you intend to keep; do not select a capacity from a generic “hours per drive” claim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse local recording as a safety net
Your encoder can send an RTMP stream to Twitch while writing a local file. Configure and test local recording in the software, console or hardware encoder you already use, and monitor free disk space during long broadcasts. The reviewed Twitch Video Broadcast documentation explains contribution to Twitch, but it does not provide a complete, officially tested local-recording setup for every encoder. Keep the original file until a second copy has been opened and checked.
Build an authorized Clips API pipeline
Prerequisites
- A Twitch developer application and its client ID.
- A user access token carrying the
clips:editscope. - The broadcaster must be live, clips must be enabled, and your account must be eligible under the channel’s restrictions.
- The broadcaster’s permission to create and retain the clips.
- Persistent storage under your control for downloaded media and metadata.
Never put a client secret or access token in browser code, a public repository or a client-side application. Keep credentials in environment variables or a secret manager and rotate them if exposed.
Create a clip with cURL
curl -X POST "https://api.twitch.tv/helix/clips?broadcaster_id=BROADCASTER_ID"
-H "Client-Id: YOUR_CLIENT_ID"
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_USER_ACCESS_TOKEN"
A successful response gives you a clip identifier. Creation is asynchronous, so a returned ID does not mean the downloadable media is ready. Record the ID, broadcaster ID and request timestamp in a job table.

}
}
);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status}: ${await res.text()}`);
const body = await res.json();
console.log(body.data[0].id);
Poll, then retrieve promptly
After creation, poll the Clips API with the returned ID until Twitch reports the clip metadata. Use exponential backoff, a maximum job age and an idempotency record so a worker restart does not create an uncontrolled stream of duplicate requests. Once the clip is ready, call Twitch’s documented clip-download operation and immediately copy the returned media to storage you control. Twitch says download URLs are temporary and expected to expire; they are not permanent archive links.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The live endpoint may return less than 90 seconds near the beginning or end of a stream. Design your editor or review queue for short source windows and confirm the final clip duration instead of assuming the maximum.
Collect large clip sets without losing jobs
Paginate with time windows
The Clips API supports pagination, but Twitch’s reference says that multiple requests return approximately 1,000 results at most before you need narrower time ranges. Store every clip ID, creation timestamp, broadcaster ID and processing state. When a range approaches that practical ceiling, split it into smaller windows and rerun only the incomplete window.
Respect download limits
The clip-download endpoint is limited to 100 requests per minute. Put downloads behind a rate-limited queue, retry transient failures with jitter, and do not retry a permanent authorization or eligibility error forever. A 429 response should pause the worker according to the response guidance or your backoff policy. Because URLs expire, prioritize ready clips and persist the bytes before processing optional metadata.
Separate control-plane and media storage
Keep a durable database or manifest for IDs, timestamps, source channel, OAuth account, request status, HTTP status and local object key. Store media separately with checksums and a retention policy. This lets you resume after a worker failure without asking Twitch to recreate a clip, and it makes duplicate detection possible when a time window is replayed.
Recommended Free Tools
Calculate capacity from your workload
- Measure the average file size or bitrate of your actual outputs.
- Multiply by broadcast hours or clip count per day.
- Multiply by the number of channels and the number of months you must retain.
- Add room for temporary downloads, failed retries and a second copy.
No official Twitch source reviewed here supplies a universal throughput, storage-size or cost figure. Your measurement and retention policy must determine those values.

What Twitch does not authorize by default
Twitch’s Terms of Service, marked last modified August 12, 2026, state that downloading any portion of Twitch Services, Materials or information is restricted “except as expressly permitted on the Twitch Services.” The same terms restrict data-mining and similar extraction. That means a public URL is not blanket permission to archive another person’s live channel. Obtain channel authorization, use Twitch’s documented endpoints, and stop when the permission or token is revoked. This is a practical compliance boundary, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

No VOD appears in Video Producer
Likely causes: Past Broadcast storage was off, the stream was not saved, the VOD was deleted, or retention expired. Fix: verify storage before the next broadcast, export within the applicable retention window, and rely on a local recording for future sessions. Twitch says Support cannot recover a VOD that was never saved or has passed retention.
Create Clip returns an authorization or eligibility error
Likely causes: the token lacks clips:edit, the broadcaster is offline, clips are disabled, or your account is not an eligible creator. Fix: issue a user token with the required scope, check the channel’s clip settings, confirm the live state, and verify that the broadcaster authorized your account.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The clip ID exists but media is unavailable
Likely cause: asynchronous processing is still in progress or the job was attempted near a stream boundary. Fix: poll with bounded backoff, inspect the clip metadata, and handle a shorter-than-90-second source window. Do not hammer the endpoint or assume the ID itself is a permanent file.
Downloads begin failing at volume
Likely causes: the 100-requests-per-minute limit, expired temporary URLs, or token problems. Fix: use a central rate limiter, retrieve each URL immediately, refresh authorization when appropriate, and persist successful media before advancing the queue.
Pagination misses older clips
Likely cause: the approximate 1,000-result ceiling across multiple requests. Fix: split the query into narrower started_at/ended_at windows, retain cursors and timestamps, and reconcile overlaps by clip ID.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Twitch video recorder. It can capture a clean image of a Twitch page for dashboards, moderation records, release notes or thumbnail workflows, but it does not replace VOD export or the Clips API for preserving stream media.
One request captures a page without you managing a headless browser:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://twitch.tv -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API options. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Operational checklist
- Confirm you own the channel or have written authorization to capture it.
- Enable VOD storage before going live and check the current retention category.
- Run a local recording when a complete archive matters.
- Export saved VODs from Video Producer before they expire.
- For clips, use a user token with
clips:editand verify live status and clip eligibility. - Persist IDs and timestamps, paginate with bounded time windows and rate-limit downloads.
- Copy temporary clip URLs to controlled storage immediately; never use them as permanent links.
- Keep a second verified copy and monitor disk capacity, failed jobs and token expiry.
FAQ
Can the Clips API archive an entire Twitch stream?
No. Each request targets a short live window and produces a 5–60 second clip. Use local recording or VOD export for complete broadcasts.
Does Twitch provide one retention period for every broadcaster?
No. The current help page lists different periods for Partners, Prime and Turbo users, Affiliates and other broadcasters. Check the page and your account status before planning an archive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are Twitch clip-download URLs safe to store in a database forever?
No. Twitch describes them as temporary. Store the media yourself and keep the clip ID and metadata as the durable reference.
Can I capture a public channel without contacting its broadcaster?
Public visibility is not the same as permission to download or automate extraction. Use only Twitch-authorized features and content you are permitted to preserve.
