To capture a screenshot with MCP, configure the official Playwright MCP server in an MCP client, open the page, then call browser_take_screenshot. With no extra options it captures the current viewport; use fullPage: true for the scrollable page or target to capture one element. The setup requires Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client.
What you need before taking an MCP screenshot
- Node.js 20 or newer, as specified by the Playwright MCP getting-started guide.
- An MCP client that can launch or connect to an MCP server.
- The official Playwright MCP server, launched with
npx @playwright/mcp@latest.
Playwright MCP drives a browser on your behalf. Its tools let an agent navigate and interact with pages, inspect accessibility information, and capture visual output. The setup guide documents headed operation by default, a --headless option, support for Chromium-family browsers, Firefox, WebKit, and Edge, and persistent sessions. Consult the Playwright MCP getting-started documentation for the current installation and configuration details.
Configure the Playwright MCP server
Add a server entry to your MCP client’s configuration using the documented command npx @playwright/mcp@latest. The exact configuration file and JSON shape depend on the client, so use that client’s instructions for where to place the entry and how to restart or reload its MCP servers. The essential point is that the client must launch the Playwright MCP package as a server.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, the server command itself is:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest
This is a command to put in the client’s server configuration; it is not by itself a complete configuration file. Once the server is available, ask the client to open the page you want to capture. For separately managed or headed environments, Playwright MCP also documents HTTP transport and the ability to connect to an existing Chromium browser through a CDP endpoint. Those deployment choices are optional; a basic local setup can use the standard client configuration.

Capture a viewport, full page, or one element
- Ask your MCP client to navigate to the target URL and wait until the page is in the state you want to document.
- For a specific control or region, call
browser_snapshotfirst. Inspect its accessibility tree and use a stable element reference when targeting an element. - Call
browser_take_screenshotwith the capture options you need. Notargetmeans the current viewport;fullPage: truecaptures the full scrollable page; atargetselects a specific element. - Set
filenameif the image should be saved rather than returned inline. Choose an outputtypeand scale if needed.
The options described in the official screenshot tool reference include:
| Option | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
target |
Selects an element to capture, using an element reference or selector. | Capture one chart, dialog, card, control, or other region instead of the whole viewport. |
fullPage: true |
Captures the complete scrollable page. | Document a long page beyond the current screen. |
filename |
Specifies a file name for saving the image. | Save an artifact rather than relying on the inline image in the tool response. |
type |
Chooses png, jpeg, or webp. |
Make the image format explicit for the next tool or workflow. |
scale: "device" |
Requests device-pixel output rather than the default CSS-pixel scale. | Use when a higher-resolution device-pixel image is needed. |
Do not combine target and fullPage. They describe different capture scopes: one targets a particular element, while the other captures the page’s full scrollable surface. Choose the one that matches the artifact you need.
In an MCP tool call, the options are arguments to browser_take_screenshot; they are not shell flags. A typical request can be expressed to the client as: “Use browser_take_screenshot with fullPage: true and save it as page.png.” For an element, ask for a screenshot with the relevant snapshot reference as target and a filename. Exact argument presentation is client-dependent, so follow the tool schema displayed by your MCP client.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse snapshots to find elements; screenshots to inspect pixels
browser_snapshot returns structured accessibility information such as roles, text, and element references. It is the useful starting point for normal interaction: inspect the page’s structure, identify the relevant control or region, and use the reference with the interaction or screenshot tool.

A screenshot answers a different question. Use it to verify visual layout, inspect canvas or chart content, or preserve visual evidence for a bug report. The Playwright MCP reference distinguishes snapshots as the interaction surface and screenshots as something to look at. If your goal is to locate a button, start with the snapshot rather than trying to infer its identity from an image. If the issue is that the button is misaligned or a chart is visually wrong, capture a screenshot.
Output, resolution, and capture scope
Viewport capture
With no target or fullPage option, the tool captures the browser’s current viewport. This is usually the right choice for a visible state, a responsive-layout check, or a page section already positioned on screen. The result reflects the current browser state, so navigate, scroll, and interact before capture as needed.
Full-page capture
Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page rather than only what is visible. This is useful for a long article or page review. A full-page image can be substantially taller than a viewport image, so consider whether you need one long artifact or several focused captures.
Element capture
Use target to capture one element. When working from a page you do not control, take a snapshot and select a reference for the intended region. A reference grounds the selection in the page’s accessibility structure; a selector is an alternative where an appropriate selector is available. Do not ask for a full-page capture at the same time.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Format and scale
The tool supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Select the format that fits the next step in your workflow; the reference does not establish one universally best format. Use scale: "device" when you specifically want device-pixel output. Otherwise, the capture uses the normal scale behavior described by the tool.
Where the screenshot goes
Provide filename when you want Playwright MCP to save the screenshot as a file. If you omit it, the image is returned inline in the tool response instead. This distinction matters for automation: a downstream process that expects a file should request a filename, while an agent that only needs to inspect the image can work with the inline result.
The tool reference establishes that a filename controls saving, but the exact destination handling can depend on the MCP client and its environment. Check the response or client’s file-access behavior rather than assuming the image is saved to a particular machine or directory. In a remote or separately managed server setup, verify which environment owns the resulting file.

Headless, remote, and browser-session choices
The getting-started documentation describes headed operation by default and supports a --headless option. Headed mode is useful when you need to see the browser while diagnosing navigation or layout; headless mode avoids displaying a browser window. Playwright MCP documents Chromium-family browsers, Firefox, WebKit, and Edge, but exact availability can depend on the installed browser and deployment environment.

If the browser is managed separately, the server can use HTTP transport or connect to an existing Chromium browser over a CDP endpoint. Persistent sessions are also documented. These options are for deployments where browser lifecycle or session management matters; a basic screenshot does not require them. Follow the official Playwright MCP documentation for the current connection configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security note for unsafe code execution
The Playwright MCP getting-started guide warns that browser_run_code_unsafe executes arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is equivalent to remote code execution. A screenshot workflow does not require enabling it. Enable that tool only for trusted MCP clients and only when you understand the code being allowed to run.
Troubleshooting screenshot problems
The Playwright tools do not appear in the client
- Confirm Node.js is version 20 or newer.
- Check that the MCP server entry launches
npx @playwright/mcp@latestand that the client has reloaded its server configuration. - Review the client and server startup output for a launch error before attempting a capture.
The saved image is missing
Check whether the call included filename. Without it, the screenshot is returned inline rather than saved as a named file. If a filename was supplied, verify the MCP client’s file handling and which machine or server environment receives the output; the tool reference does not prescribe a universal save directory.

The wrong element was captured
Call browser_snapshot to inspect the accessibility tree and obtain a stable reference, then use that reference as the target. This is generally more grounded than guessing from the screenshot alone. Make sure the page is in the intended state before taking the capture.
The tool rejects the capture options
Check that you have not combined target and fullPage, and confirm the option names and values against the schema shown by your MCP client. In particular, the documented choices are png, jpeg, and webp for type, and "device" for device scale.
The page or browser is not available in a remote setup
Confirm that the server is connected to the intended browser and that the selected transport or CDP endpoint matches your deployment. A separately managed browser can be useful, but it adds a connection boundary that a local default setup does not have.
