To capture a screenshot with Claude through MCP, connect an MCP screenshot server to an MCP-capable Claude client, then ask Claude to use the server’s screenshot tool. Choose a webpage-capture server for a URL or a desktop-capture server for the screen or a window. MCP makes capture available as a tool; it does not give Claude automatic access to your computer. For a full desktop interaction loop through the Claude API, Anthropic’s Computer Use toolset is a separate route that your application must run and control.
Choose the capture route that fits the task
First decide what Claude needs to see. A webpage screenshot is an image of a browser-rendered page; a desktop screenshot captures the screen or a particular window. The distinction matters: MCP servers are specific about their capture targets and operating systems, while Anthropic’s API Computer Use toolset requires your application to provide and operate a desktop environment.

Screenshot Scout documents a capture_screenshot MCP tool for webpage images or PDFs. Its documentation lists local npm, Claude Desktop extension, and hosted endpoint modes and says an account and access key are required. Node.js 22 or newer is required for its local npm route. Confirm current setup steps, account terms, and the way your chosen mode handles page data in Screenshot Scout’s documentation.
Use Anthropic’s API Computer Use for a desktop action loop
Use this route when the task needs desktop interaction through your own application, rather than simply exposing a screenshot operation in an MCP client. Anthropic’s documentation describes adding {"type":"computer_toolset_20260801"} to the Messages API request’s tools array. Claude can then return tool-use actions such as screenshot, left_click, type, and zoom. Your application dispatches the requested actions to its desktop environment and sends tool results back to Claude.

What the integration must provide
- An environment: provide a virtualized or containerized computing environment appropriate to the task. Anthropic’s reference example uses a virtual X11 display and a container; that is one implementation example, not the only permitted architecture.
- Action implementations: implement the requested operations, such as taking a screenshot, clicking, and typing, against the environment your application controls.
- An agent loop: receive Claude’s tool-use block, execute the action, return the result, and continue until the interaction is finished or your application stops it.
- A controlled entry point: decide how the user starts the interaction, what the environment can access, and how the application handles tool requests and results.
The distinction from MCP is architectural: with an MCP screenshot server, the client invokes a server tool that exposes capture; with API Computer Use, your application supplies the environment and performs each requested desktop action. For a task limited to webpage interaction, Anthropic describes browser use as the closer fit because it does not require a complete desktop environment. Handle screenshot size and coordinate mapping
If Claude returns screen coordinates after inspecting an image, those coordinates must refer to the same coordinate space your application uses to click. Anthropic’s best-practices article, published May 13, 2026, explains that an oversized screenshot may be downscaled internally by the API. If your integration then applies returned coordinates directly to the original display, clicks can land in the wrong place. Pre-downscale the image and map the returned coordinates back to the original display dimensions.

A screenshot can expose anything visible in the captured screen, including private messages, account details, or other open windows. Desktop control can go further by clicking, typing, or interacting with content online. Anthropic warns that computer use has risks distinct from standard API features and that risks are heightened when an integration interacts with the internet. It advises developers to inform end users of relevant risks and obtain consent before enabling computer use in their products.
- Decide which desktop, browser profile, files, and network resources the environment can reach; do not imply isolation unless your implementation actually provides it.
- Explain to users what may be captured, where screenshots and tool results go, and which actions the integration can perform.
- Review third-party MCP package permissions and source before running it, and use only the access the task requires.
- Keep credentials and sensitive pages out of the capture environment unless they are necessary for the task and your handling process is appropriate.
