The screen dims, and you can drag a rectangle, draw a freeform shape, choose a window, or capture the full screen. The result opens in Snipping Tool, where you can copy, annotate, save, or share it. Use Windows + PrtScn when you want an entire-screen image saved automatically, or PrtScn when you only need the image on the clipboard.
Choose the shortcut that matches the result you need

Shortcut behavior can differ with a laptop’s Fn layer, keyboard layout, Windows build, or the application receiving the keystroke. If a key is labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, Print Screen, or shares another function, try the alternatives below.
Capture a selected area with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the overlay appears, choose a mode from the toolbar: rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip.
- For a rectangular snip, drag across the area. For freeform, draw around it. In window mode, select the window; in full-screen mode, Windows captures every display.
- Click the notification that appears after the capture. Snipping Tool opens the image for editing.
- Use the toolbar to draw with a pen or highlighter, add shapes or emojis, erase marks, crop, run Text actions (OCR), copy, save, share, or open the image in Paint.
The shortcut works on Windows 10 and Windows 11. A clipboard copy is not a permanent file: save it from Snipping Tool or paste it into Paint, an email, a document, or another image editor.
Capture a menu or other temporary interface
Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, select the still-image snip option, and set a 1–5 second delay before selecting the area. Use the delay to open a menu, tooltip, or context menu that would disappear as soon as you press a shortcut. Capture it when the countdown ends, then edit and save as usual.

Use the extra features on Copilot+ PCs
On Windows 11 AI PCs identified by Microsoft as Copilot+ PCs, Snipping Tool also lists Perfect screenshot and Color picker. These options are limited to that hardware category; they are not a general Windows 10 feature.
Save the whole screen automatically
Press Windows + PrtScn. The screen may briefly dim, indicating that Windows captured it. Open File Explorer and go to PicturesScreenshots. Each capture is saved as an image file, so no paste step is required.
If Pictures is redirected to OneDrive or another managed location, the visible folder may differ from the local default. Search File Explorer for “Screenshots” if the folder is not where you expect, and check that the capture was actually triggered before troubleshooting storage.
Copy the entire screen or one window to the clipboard
Entire display
Press PrtSc or PrtScn. Open Paint or the destination app and press Ctrl + V. Crop or annotate there, then use that app’s Save command. This method does not automatically create a file.

Active window
- Click the window you want so it has focus.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Switch to Paint, a document, an email, or another destination and press Ctrl + V.
- Save the pasted image if you need a reusable file.
Alt + Print Screen captures the focused window rather than the full desktop. Drop-down menus and transient overlays may not be included if focus changes before the keystroke.
Record a video instead of taking a still
For a moving demonstration, press Windows + Shift + R, drag over the region, and start the recording. Stop when finished. Windows saves the result as an MP4 in VideosScreen Recordings by default. A recording is appropriate for showing a sequence of clicks; use a still snip when a single state is enough.
What to do when your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Compact and laptop keyboards often put Print Screen behind an Fn layer or omit the dedicated label. Try Fn + Windows + Space Bar where the device supports that hardware mapping. You can also use Windows + Shift + S, which does not require a dedicated PrtSc key.
If you frequently need full-screen files, a USB keyboard with a Print Screen key or another keyboard with a clearly labeled PrtSc key can make the Windows + PrtScn workflow easier. Confirm the layout and Fn behavior for your specific model before buying.

How to choose the best Windows capture method
- Need a precise region: Windows + Shift + S, rectangular or freeform mode.
- Need one application window: Windows + Shift + S in window mode, or Alt + Print Screen if clipboard output is sufficient.
- Need an untouched full-screen file: Windows + PrtScn.
- Need to paste immediately: PrtSc or Alt + Print Screen, followed by Ctrl + V.
- Need annotations or OCR: Snipping Tool, then use its pen, highlighter, shapes, crop, or Text actions tools.
- Need a menu that vanishes: Snipping Tool’s 1–5 second delay.
- Need motion: Windows + Shift + R and the MP4 recording workflow.
Common problems and fixes
Nothing appears after pressing PrtSc
PrtSc copies to the clipboard rather than opening a window. Open Paint or your destination and press Ctrl + V. If that fails, try the keyboard’s Fn key, verify that another application is not intercepting the shortcut, and use Windows + Shift + S as a test.
Windows + PrtScn does not create a file
Check that you pressed the Windows key and the Print Screen key together, not PrtSc alone. Look in PicturesScreenshots and search for recent image files. On a laptop, try Fn + Windows + PrtScn if the Print Screen function is on an Fn layer. A managed or redirected Pictures folder can also change the visible path.
The wrong window was captured
Click the target first, then use Alt + Print Screen or choose window mode in Windows + Shift + S. Make sure a dialog or another app has not taken focus.
A menu disappears before capture
Open Snipping Tool directly and set a 1–5 second delay. Open the menu during the countdown, then capture it.

The screenshot looks blurry or has unexpected scaling
Windows captures the display at its current resolution and scaling. Maximize the target window, use the display you intend to document, and avoid enlarging a small image after capture. For documentation, save the original PNG from Snipping Tool before making resized copies.
OCR or editing controls are missing
Open the capture through the Snipping Tool notification rather than leaving it only on the clipboard. Some controls vary by Windows version and hardware; Perfect screenshot and Color picker are specifically limited to Copilot+ PCs.
A recording is not where expected
Check VideosScreen Recordings, and search File Explorer for recent MP4 files. If your Videos folder is redirected, use that profile’s actual Videos location.

Reliability, privacy, and cost decisions
- Local shortcuts: immediate and offline-friendly, but they capture only what your display renders and require manual pasting unless you use Windows + PrtScn or Snipping Tool’s save flow.
- Website API: repeatable for URLs and automation, but the target page still needs to load successfully. Use waits, custom cookies or headers, and a realistic viewport when a site depends on session state or responsive layout.
- Privacy: do not paste passwords, private messages, or confidential documents into screenshots shared externally. For API captures, review the URL, cookies, headers, and Authorization values before sending a request.

How do I copy text from a screenshot?
Open the still in Snipping Tool and use Text actions when that control is available, then copy the recognized text. Recognition quality depends on the image and language.
Why is my screenshot black inside a video app?
Some protected or hardware-accelerated video surfaces intentionally prevent ordinary screen capture. Try the application’s own export or snapshot feature instead of bypassing its protection.
