To capture a Safari Responsive Design Mode preview on a Mac, open Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode (or press Control-Command-R), set the viewport, then press Shift-Command-5 and choose a screen, window, or selected-area capture. If you need only webpage pixels, Safari 18.4 adds the Web Inspector command console.screenshot(), which accepts a DOMRect.
Decide first whether the image should include Safari’s interface or just the rendered page. The two methods produce different evidence and should not be described as interchangeable.
Choose what the screenshot must contain
Responsive Design Mode (RDM) shows a page inside Safari’s browser window. Your capture scope determines what someone else can verify later.

Open Responsive Design Mode
- Open the page you want to inspect in Safari.
- If Develop is missing from the menu bar, open Safari’s settings, go to the advanced developer-features section, and enable the option that shows developer tools. Return to the page after the menu appears.
- Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode, or press Control-Command-R.
- Choose a device preset, or enter the required width and height and resize the preview to a custom size.
RDM dimensions are displayed in screen points. Record the width and height you used; a screenshot without those values is difficult to reproduce or compare.
Set viewport, orientation, and pixel ratio
Viewport dimensions
Use the width and height that correspond to the breakpoint or layout you are investigating. For a breakpoint report, capture just below, at, and just above the suspected threshold rather than relying on one preset. A preset is an approximation, not a guarantee that a physical device will render identically.
Orientation
Switching between portrait and landscape swaps the viewport dimensions. Capture both orientations when navigation, tables, or fixed-position controls change substantially after rotation.
Pixel ratio
Set the pixel ratio deliberately. It can affect pixel-ratio media queries and which image candidate is selected by srcset or CSS image-set(). Two captures with the same CSS width can therefore use different assets or produce different sharpness. Include the selected ratio in your notes or filename.

Capture the Safari window or screen with macOS Screenshot
- Leave the page focused in RDM and arrange the Safari window exactly as you want it documented.
- Press Shift-Command-5. The Screenshot controls appear along the bottom of the display.
- Choose one of the capture modes: entire screen, selected window, or selected portion.
- For a selected portion, drag around the RDM preview. Include the device frame if the frame is part of what you are documenting; exclude it when the page content is the only subject.
- Open Options if you need a different save location or a timer. A timer gives you time to open a menu or move the pointer before capture.
- Click Capture. Confirm the saved file and, if needed, rename it with the viewport width, height, orientation, pixel ratio, and scope.
For example, a useful filename is checkout-390x844-portrait-3x-window.png. Keep the original image; cropping it later can remove evidence of the viewport or browser state.
Capture only a webpage rectangle in Safari 18.4
WebKit documents a Console API in its Safari 18.4 feature article. It accepts a DOMRect, so it is useful when a window capture contains too much browser chrome.
Capture a fixed rectangle
console.screenshot(new DOMRect(0, 0, 800, 600))This requests the rectangle beginning at the page’s top-left coordinate with a width of 800 and a height of 600. Adjust the values to the region you need.

Capture one element

console.screenshot(node.getBoundingClientRect());getBoundingClientRect() returns the element’s current position and size in the viewport. Replace #testNode with a selector that uniquely identifies the component. If the selector returns null, inspect the markup and use the actual class, ID, or attribute.
The documented API is tied to Safari 18.4’s Web Inspector features; do not assume the same command exists in older Safari releases. Read the version-specific documentation in WebKit Features in Safari 18.4 before standardizing it in a team workflow.
Make captures reproducible
- Write down the Safari version, macOS version, page URL, viewport width and height, orientation, pixel ratio, and whether you captured the screen, window, selected portion, or DOM rectangle.
- Use a clean page state: record whether a cookie prompt, login state, expanded menu, or test data was present.
- For layout comparisons, keep zoom at 100 percent and use the same capture scope for every viewport.
- Wait for fonts, images, and asynchronous content to finish loading before capture. A screenshot taken while a web font is swapping can make a layout appear to have a different breakpoint.
- When documenting a bug, keep a second capture that includes the RDM controls or browser window. The clean page image is easier to inspect, while the wider capture proves the test conditions.
Know what Responsive Design Mode does not prove
Apple describes RDM presets as approximations. They do not reproduce every aspect of a physical device’s layout, rendering, or behavior. Browser address bars, the on-screen keyboard, device-specific form controls, and platform differences can change the result. A screenshot is therefore evidence of Safari’s macOS preview at a stated configuration, not proof that an iPhone or iPad will behave identically.
For higher-fidelity checks of iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS rendering, Apple recommends opening the page with Simulator. Use an actual device as the final check for touch interaction, keyboard appearance, camera or permission prompts, scrolling physics, and other hardware-dependent behavior. Troubleshoot common capture problems
The Develop menu or RDM command is missing
Developer features are not enabled, or Safari is not the active application. Enable the developer-features option in Safari’s advanced settings, return to the page, and confirm that Safari has focus before using Control-Command-R.
The shortcut does nothing
Another application may be intercepting the key combination, or focus may be inside a text field or Web Inspector pane. Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode directly. If the menu command also fails, close and reopen the page and try again.
The selected-area image includes the wrong content
Shift-Command-5 remembers the last capture mode and selection. Reopen the controls, choose Capture Selected Portion, and redraw the rectangle. Use Capture Selected Window when you need a stable window boundary.
The page rectangle is blank or the element is not found
Run the Console command after the page has loaded and verify that the selector matches a visible element. A selector inside a cross-origin iframe may not be accessible from the top-level page. In that case, capture the iframe’s visible region with macOS Screenshot or run the command in the frame’s own inspection context when Safari permits it.

The image looks soft or uses the wrong asset
Check the RDM pixel ratio and the page’s responsive image rules. A ratio change can select a different srcset or image-set() candidate. Repeat the capture at the intended ratio and record it alongside the dimensions.
The result differs from a real phone or tablet
That is an RDM limitation rather than a capture failure. Compare the page in Simulator or on the target hardware, especially for forms, keyboards, touch gestures, permissions, and platform-specific controls.

Is the Safari 18.4 Console screenshot command available in every Safari version?
No. WebKit documents console.screenshot(DOMRect) as a Safari 18.4 feature. On older releases, use macOS Screenshot or verify that your installed Safari provides the API before depending on it.
