You cannot capture a rendered screenshot from a Mink session that uses Goutte. Goutte is an HTTP client and HTML parser, not a browser: it does not create a viewport, execute JavaScript, lay out CSS, or paint pixels. Keep it for HTTP-level scenarios, and run screenshot scenarios with a browser-controlling Mink driver such as Selenium or Chrome. Mink documents this driver boundary and the actions each driver supports in its driver guide and overview.
Why Goutte cannot produce a screenshot
Goutte follows redirects, sends requests, receives responses, and parses the returned markup. It does not start Chrome, Firefox, or another rendering engine. Consequently there is no browser window, computed layout, JavaScript-created content, or pixel buffer for a screenshot method to read. Mink describes Goutte as a “pure HTTP” browser emulator rather than a rendered browser.
The same limitation affects more than screenshots. Mink marks BrowserKit/Goutte as lacking JavaScript evaluation, element visibility checks, mouse interaction, and window resizing. Calling one of those operations can raise UnsupportedDriverActionException. A screenshot failure is therefore a driver-capability problem, not a missing assertion or a bad image path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The Mink ChromeDriver documentation describes controlling Chrome, including headless operation, and the associated Chrome Mink driver project documents screenshot capture.

Choose the right session for each scenario
| Session/driver | What it can verify | What it cannot provide | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goutte or BrowserKit | HTTP status, response content, links, forms, redirects, and server-side HTML | Rendered pixels, JavaScript/AJAX behavior, visibility, mouse actions, and window resizing | Simple headless HTTP execution, but no screenshot source |
| Selenium-controlled browser | Rendered pages, JavaScript behavior, viewport-dependent layout, and browser interaction | Nothing that depends on a browser being unavailable; exact features depend on the installed driver | Requires a browser, a driver endpoint, and version-compatible packages |
| Chrome/CDP-based Mink driver | Chrome rendering and browser screenshots, including headless runs | Capabilities not implemented by the particular driver version | Requires compatible Chrome and driver components; verify the API in your lockfile’s version |
A practical Behat suite commonly keeps both: Goutte for fast HTTP checks and a browser session for JavaScript or visual scenarios. Behat’s cookbook demonstrates separate Goutte and Selenium2 configurations, although that page documents Behat 2.5-era configuration and must be adapted to your current packages: Behat and Mink cookbook.
Prerequisites and version checks
- Install the Behat, Mink, and Mink extension versions required by your project.
- Install a supported Chrome/Chromium (or another browser) and the matching browser-driver component.
- Decide whether CI will run headless. The Chrome documentation shows a headless launch path that avoids a display server.
- Read the exact driver and extension documentation for the versions in
composer.lock. The examples below illustrate the architecture; names and configuration keys from older Behat releases are not guaranteed to work unchanged in a current stack.
Do not try to make a screenshot by adding a file extension, changing a Goutte option, or calling a browser-only method. Those changes cannot create the rendering process that Goutte does not have.
Configure separate Goutte and browser sessions
The following illustrative configuration gives the suite an HTTP session and a Selenium-backed browser session. It uses the legacy selenium2 key shown in Behat/Mink examples; use the key and driver class required by your installed Mink extension.

Start the browser-driver service and browser in the way prescribed by your installed driver. The endpoint in the example must be reachable from the Behat process. If the browser is running in a container, replace 127.0.0.1 with the reachable service name and expose the driver port to the test container.
With this arrangement, ordinary scenarios use the default Goutte session. A scenario tagged @javascript uses the configured JavaScript session, which is the browser session in the example:

Scenario: Capture the rendered checkout page
Given I am on "/checkout"
Then I should see "Payment"
And I save the browser screenshot as "checkout-payment"
If your project selects sessions explicitly instead of using @javascript, select the browser session in the context before invoking the screenshot helper. The essential check is that $this->getSession()->getDriver() is a browser driver, not Goutte.
Add a screenshot step without assuming one driver API
Screenshot method names have changed across Mink drivers and releases. The helper below deliberately checks the installed objects before writing a file. It uses the common driver-level getScreenshot() method when available and also checks for a session-level implementation. If neither exists, stop and consult the documentation for your exact driver rather than silently producing an empty artifact.

use Behat\Behat\Context\Context;

{
/**

*/
public function saveBrowserScreenshot(string $name): void
{
$session = $this->getSession();
$driver = $session->getDriver();
if (method_exists($driver, 'getScreenshot')) {
$bytes = $driver->getScreenshot();
} elseif (method_exists($session, 'getScreenshot')) {
$bytes = $session->getScreenshot();
} else {
throw new RuntimeException(
'The active Mink driver does not expose a screenshot method. '
. 'Check the driver documentation for the installed version.'
);
}
if (!is_string($bytes) || $bytes === '') {
throw new RuntimeException('The browser returned an empty screenshot.');
}
$safeName = preg_replace('/[^A-Za-z0-9._-]+/', '-', $name);
$directory = __DIR__ . '/../artifacts/screenshots';
if (!is_dir($directory) && !mkdir($directory, 0775, true) && !is_dir($directory)) {
throw new RuntimeException('Cannot create screenshot directory: ' . $directory);
}
$path = $directory . '/' . $safeName . '.png';
if (file_put_contents($path, $bytes) === false) {
throw new RuntimeException('Cannot write screenshot: ' . $path);
}
}
}
This code does not make Goutte screenshot-capable; it fails clearly if the scenario is accidentally running on Goutte. Some driver versions expose a differently named save method or return a file path rather than bytes. In that case, replace only the marked capture section with the method documented for your installed package and keep the directory, naming, and error checks.
Make the captured image represent the state you intend to test
Wait for application state
A browser screenshot taken immediately after navigation can precede an AJAX render, image lazy-load, font load, or animation. Use Mink’s supported wait-for-selector, wait-for-delay, or application-specific synchronization facilities before the screenshot. Prefer a state-based wait, such as the appearance of a stable result element, over an arbitrary long sleep.
Set a repeatable viewport
Responsive breakpoints make the same URL look different at different widths. Use the browser driver’s window-resize operation if that operation is supported, and set the same dimensions in local and CI runs. If resizing is unsupported, configure the browser’s startup window size instead. Record the chosen viewport in the test documentation.

Control authentication and data
Log in through the browser session or load the required cookies before navigation. Seed deterministic test data so that a screenshot failure reflects a UI change rather than a changing order number, timestamp, or randomly selected record. Never put production credentials in a feature file or an image artifact.
Use stable artifact names
Include the scenario or build identifier in the artifact directory when parallel jobs can write the same name. Preserve screenshots as CI artifacts on failure, and clean old artifacts separately from the test process. A write error should fail the scenario instead of leaving a misleading “passed” test without an image.
Run and verify the scenario
- Start the browser and its driver endpoint, then verify that the endpoint is reachable from the Behat environment.
- Run only the tagged scenario, for example
vendor/bin/behat --tags=@javascript, using the command and profile conventions of your project. - Confirm in the test log that the active session is the browser session. If the step reports an unsupported action, inspect the session selection before changing code.
- Open the generated PNG and check that it contains rendered text, CSS, and JavaScript-created content. A successful file write alone does not prove that the correct page state was captured.
- Run the complete suite afterward. Keep HTTP-only scenarios on Goutte so they do not pay browser startup and rendering costs.
Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
UnsupportedDriverActionException when taking or preparing the image |
The scenario is still using Goutte/BrowserKit, or the selected browser driver does not implement that action. | Tag the scenario for the browser session, inspect the active driver, and confirm the driver’s capability table. |
| Connection refused or session-not-created | The browser-driver service is stopped, its URL is wrong, or browser and driver versions are incompatible. | Start the service, test the endpoint from the Behat host, and align versions using the installed driver’s documentation. |
| The screenshot method is missing | The example targets a different Mink driver or release. | Inspect the concrete driver class and use its documented screenshot method; do not add a fake method to Goutte. |
| Blank or partially rendered image | Capture happened before JavaScript, fonts, lazy images, or navigation finished; authentication may also have failed. | Wait for a meaningful selector, verify the current URL and login state, and capture after the final UI state. |
| Works locally but differs in CI | Viewport, fonts, timezone, locale, browser version, or data differs. | Pin the browser environment where practical, set viewport and locale explicitly, and use deterministic fixtures. |
| No file appears despite a passing step | The path is relative to an unexpected working directory or the artifact directory is not writable. | Use an absolute project-relative path, create the directory before writing, check the return value, and publish that directory as a CI artifact. |
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
Goutte is usually the economical choice for response-level assertions because it does not start a browser. Browser sessions consume more CPU and memory, require a driver service, and can be affected by fonts, GPU settings, network timing, and browser updates. Keep browser coverage focused on JavaScript, layout, and visual evidence; do not convert every HTTP assertion into a browser scenario.
For parallel CI jobs, give each browser process an isolated profile and artifact directory. Reusing one browser session can save startup time but risks cookies, local storage, and page state leaking between scenarios. Fresh sessions improve isolation; measure your own pipeline before choosing a reuse strategy because the sources do not establish a universal speed figure.
Finally, treat the documentation links as architectural guidance, not a promise that an old configuration will install today. Mink’s current pages and your Composer lockfile determine the compatible Behat, PHP, browser, and driver combination.

If the goal is a clean image or PDF rather than in-process DOM assertions, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The same service supports full-page captures with lazy images, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL-based caching, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration work.
For a direct capture, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get('https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot', params={'access_key': 'YOUR_API_KEY', 'url': 'https://stripe.com'}, timeout=90)
