BrowserStack has several screenshot workflows, and the right one depends on whether you are testing a website or an app, want screenshots automatically or at a chosen test step, and need the image in the dashboard or saved as a test artifact. For Selenium and Playwright, you can enable automatic Visual Logs or call the framework’s screenshot method in your script. For URL-based captures, use the Screenshots API; for app tests, capture through Appium or Espresso; and for manual viewport comparisons, use Responsive Testing.

Choose the BrowserStack screenshot method that fits your test

What you need BrowserStack method Trigger and destination
See what a Selenium test saw at its commands Automate Visual Logs Automatic when enabled; view screenshots in the Automate dashboard. BrowserStack documentation
Save a Selenium screenshot at a chosen step Explicit Selenium screenshot Called by your test; save or copy the image to the test runner or CI artifact storage. BrowserStack documentation
Capture a selected Playwright step page.screenshot() Explicit; writes the image to the path you specify. BrowserStack documentation
Capture screenshots from a URL across configured browsers and operating systems Screenshots API Authenticated API job; plan eligibility applies. BrowserStack documentation
Capture an app during an automated test Appium or Espresso screenshot support Called from the app test; view or retrieve images according to the framework workflow. Appium documentation and Espresso documentation
Compare several responsive viewport sizes manually Responsive Testing Use a camera control for one configured device or all configured devices. BrowserStack documentation
Attach a single annotated viewport image to an issue Bug Capture Viewport capture with annotation; its FAQ says multiple screenshots are not supported. BrowserStack documentation

These workflows are not interchangeable. Visual Logs are dashboard debugging evidence, while an explicit test screenshot gives you a file your script can preserve. The Screenshots API starts URL-based jobs without requiring you to write a separate browser automation test for each capture. App screenshots are subject to platform and framework behavior, and Bug Capture’s limits apply to Bug Capture rather than to Automate or App Automate.

Capture Selenium screenshots in BrowserStack Automate

Automatic screenshots with Visual Logs

Visual Logs take screenshots at Selenium commands and are disabled by default. Enable the BrowserStack debug capability, or the corresponding BrowserStack SDK setting, when you want step-by-step images available in the Automate dashboard. This is useful when diagnosing a failed test because the images are associated with the test’s execution rather than being written to your local machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this route when dashboard inspection is enough. If you need a file to attach to a CI build, issue, or external archive, add an explicit screenshot call to the test instead. BrowserStack describes these two destinations separately in its Selenium screenshot guidance.

Explicit screenshot saved by the test

Call the screenshot API provided by your Selenium language binding at the point you want to preserve. The exact code varies by language; BrowserStack supplies examples for Java, Node.js, C#, PHP, Python, and Ruby. The essential workflow is:

  1. Run the BrowserStack Selenium session and navigate to the state you want to document.
  2. Call the Selenium screenshot method using the binding for your language.
  3. Write or copy the returned bytes or temporary image file to a path on the machine running the test.
  4. In CI, upload or copy the artifact to durable storage before the runner is shut down.

Do not assume a screenshot shown in the Automate dashboard has also been saved to your local workspace. Dashboard Visual Logs and script-created files have different destinations.

Capture a Playwright screenshot at a test step

For an explicitly chosen point in a Playwright test, call page.screenshot() and provide a file path. For example, the documented pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'checkout.png' });

Place the call after the page has reached the state you want to record—for example, after navigating to a page and completing the interaction under test. The path is where Playwright writes the image on the test runner. In a short script, make sure the page and browser are still open when the call runs.

Automatic Playwright command screenshots

If you want BrowserStack’s debugging workflow to capture images at Playwright commands, enable browserstack.debug: true in the BrowserStack capabilities. BrowserStack says Visual Logs are disabled by default; with this setting, screenshots are captured at each Playwright command and can be inspected in the debugging workflow. See Debug failed Playwright tests for the product-specific setup.

Choose explicit capture when you need a predictable image file at a particular test point. Choose Visual Logs when a sequence of command-level evidence in BrowserStack is more useful than managing image paths in your own test code.

Use the BrowserStack Screenshots API for URL captures

The Screenshots API is the BrowserStack route for starting screenshot jobs from a URL across selected operating-system and browser configurations. It suits repeatable browser-coverage captures when you do not need to write an automation test for each URL. The API documentation describes starting and stopping generation and choosing operating systems and browsers; consult the Screenshots API page for the current request format and supported configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requests require authentication with a BrowserStack username and access key. Keep credentials in secret storage or environment variables; do not put them in source code, shared examples, or logs. BrowserStack states that API access is available on Automate plans that include browsers, and not on a Live-only subscription. If you have a Live-only plan, BrowserStack says to use Screenshots through the webpage instead. Verify eligibility for your subscription before building a workflow around API access.

Capture screenshots from app tests

Appium and App Automate

For an Appium test, call the driver’s screenshot function from the test and save the resulting image on the machine running the automated tests. BrowserStack provides language-specific examples in its Appium screenshot documentation.

In CI, the test runner may be temporary. Copy or upload the screenshot before that runner is shut down if you need to keep the evidence. Also account for app and operating-system security: BrowserStack notes that security settings can prevent capture, including Android’s FLAG_SECURE. If the method runs but produces no usable screenshot, investigate the app’s security behavior rather than assuming the BrowserStack session failed.

Espresso and App Automate

BrowserStack documents both native screenshot capture and a Spoon-library route for Espresso. Its documentation says native capture supports all Android versions, while Spoon is supported only through Android 10. For the documented session-capture route, enable debugscreenshots in the Espresso build request, then view the images in the App Automate session detail page’s Screenshots tab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For native captures, provide a valid screenshot name. BrowserStack warns that names containing spaces or invalid characters may not appear in the dashboard. See Access Espresso test screenshots on BrowserStack App Automate for the current framework-specific details.

Capture one or many viewports in Responsive Testing

  1. Open the page you want to check.
  2. Open Testing Toolkit and select Responsive Testing.
  3. Add predefined device resolutions or create a custom configuration.
  4. Use the camera control on a device to capture that individual viewport, or use the camera control in the top bar to capture all configured devices.

This is the manual route for side-by-side viewport checks and switching among viewport sizes. The capture scope depends on the devices you have configured: a device-level camera captures that device, while the top-bar camera captures all configured devices. BrowserStack documents the workflow in its Responsive Testing guide.

Understand Bug Capture screenshot limits

BrowserStack’s Bug Capture screenshot FAQ describes viewport-only capture, not a full-page screenshot, and says multiple screenshots are not supported in that workflow. You can annotate the image to direct attention to a detail. If the issue depends on changes over time or several moments, the FAQ suggests recording video instead. These limits are specific to Bug Capture and should not be applied to Selenium, Playwright, App Automate, or the Screenshots API.

If technical logs are missing, BrowserStack’s Bug Capture FAQ recommends checking whether Replays are enabled and whether browser technical logs existed before the screenshot.

Troubleshoot missing or unusable screenshots

  • No Visual Logs in Automate: Visual Logs are disabled by default. Enable the Selenium debug capability or the relevant BrowserStack SDK setting, then check the Automate dashboard.
  • No Playwright command images: Set browserstack.debug: true in BrowserStack capabilities and inspect the debugging workflow. A script-level image still requires an explicit page.screenshot() call.
  • Screenshot visible in BrowserStack but absent from CI files: Visual Logs are dashboard evidence. Add an explicit screenshot call and save its output on the runner, then upload the file before an ephemeral runner exits.
  • Screenshots API access denied or unavailable: Confirm that the subscription includes Automate browsers. BrowserStack does not list Live-only subscriptions as eligible for API access; use the webpage route where applicable.
  • App screenshot is blocked: Check app and platform security restrictions. BrowserStack specifically identifies Android FLAG_SECURE as a setting that can disable capture.
  • Espresso screenshot missing from dashboard: Check that debugscreenshots was enabled for the documented session route, and that native screenshot names contain no spaces or invalid characters.
  • Bug Capture does not show a full page or several images: Its documented workflow captures the viewport and does not support multiple screenshots. Annotate the viewport image or use video if multiple moments matter.
  • Bug Capture has no technical logs: Check Replay settings and whether technical browser logs existed before taking the screenshot.

Reliability, artifact handling, and cost considerations

The reviewed BrowserStack instructions describe product workflows and eligibility, but do not establish screenshot success rates, capture speed, or a universal retention period. Treat those as configuration or account questions rather than assuming a particular guarantee. For reliable test evidence, decide where the file must live before choosing the capture method: dashboard-only debugging can use Visual Logs, while long-lived CI evidence should be explicitly saved and exported from the runner.

For a repeated URL matrix, the Screenshots API may avoid maintaining an automation script per capture, but its BrowserStack plan eligibility matters. For a test assertion or a particular interaction state, an explicit Selenium or Playwright call is more directly controlled by test flow. No BrowserStack screenshot pricing or per-image cost is established by the documentation cited here, so check the current plan and account terms rather than inferring a price from the workflow documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take more than one screenshot during a BrowserStack workflow?

Yes in several workflows: test scripts can call screenshot methods at multiple points, Visual Logs capture command-level evidence when enabled, and Responsive Testing can capture configured devices. Bug Capture is the exception: its FAQ says it does not support multiple screenshots.

Can BrowserStack take a full-page screenshot?

It depends on the workflow. Bug Capture’s screenshot FAQ specifies viewport-only capture. Do not apply that limitation to other BrowserStack products; use the relevant automation or URL-capture workflow and check its current documentation for scope.

Where does a BrowserStack screenshot get saved?

Visual Logs and the documented Espresso session captures are viewed in BrowserStack dashboards. Explicit Selenium, Playwright, and Appium captures are saved by the test workflow to the runner or path you specify; export them before an ephemeral CI runner stops.
