To capture a Reddit post with a screenshot API, give a browser-capable service the post’s canonical Reddit permalink, wait for the page to render, and save the returned image alongside the permalink and capture time. Use a desktop-sized viewport for readable text; choose a full-page capture only when you need the whole thread and its length and privacy implications are acceptable. A screenshot does not grant permission to access or reuse Reddit data: OAuth, rate limits, Reddit’s terms and use policies still apply.
What you need before capturing a Reddit post
Start with the post’s canonical Reddit permalink. Reddit’s Devvit Post object exposes a permalink, as well as fields such as url, title, and media metadata. Use the permalink to capture the Reddit page in context; a linked article or image URL may show the destination media rather than the post, its discussion, or its metadata.
Choose a screenshot API that renders pages in a browser-capable environment. Reddit content can depend on client-side execution, so a service that merely fetches the initial HTML may not produce the same result as a rendered page. Make captures readable and reproducible
- Use a desktop-width viewport. A wider page view is generally better for keeping post text and metadata legible. If the output is intended for a mobile interface, use a device-sized viewport instead and check the resulting text size.
- Wait for the rendered content. Configure the screenshot API to wait for an appropriate condition, such as a selector, a delay, or network idle where supported. A page can return before client-side content has finished rendering.
- Choose full-page capture deliberately. It can include more of a long thread, but very long pages may produce unwieldy images, and capturing more discussion also captures more user-generated content. Capture only what the use case requires.
- Keep the permalink with the image. Record the original Reddit URL and capture time, plus any access context needed to reproduce the capture. An image alone may not preserve surrounding context or establish which page state it represents.
- Pick a format for the destination. Use a format supported by your downstream workflow and prioritize legibility for text-heavy posts. If the image will be uploaded as Reddit-hosted media through Devvit, the documented formats are PNG, JPEG, WebP, and GIF.
Using a capture inside a Devvit app
If your Devvit app already captures its own canvas, the documented upload flow is different from asking an external screenshot API to render a Reddit permalink. Convert the canvas to a PNG data URL, send it to a server route, then upload the image with media.upload(). The upload method returns a Reddit CDN URL for the asset.

// `uploaded` includes the Reddit CDN URL for the uploaded asset.The last lines show the documented method and outcome, not a complete server-route implementation: your app still needs to pass the data URL to the route that performs the upload and handle the returned asset URL. Reddit for Developers documents a maximum upload size of 20 MB and a 30-second upload timeout. Larger images can fail on slower networks, so check the data size before sending and avoid unnecessarily tall full-thread images.
Reddit access, policy, and research use
A publicly viewable permalink is not a substitute for checking the rules that govern your access and use. Reddit’s developer-access guidance covers the Developer Platform, Data API, Ads API, researchers API, and Reddit Embeds, with access subject to authentication and policy requirements. Reddit’s Data API guidance says OAuth is required and points developers to current terms and documentation. Check OAuth requirements, rate limits, the Developer Terms, Data API Terms, and Responsible Builder Policy for your geography and use case before building a recurring capture job. Commercial API access may require contacting Reddit.

For research specifically, Reddit Help’s page on Developer Platform and accessing Reddit data, updated in 2026, states: “The only official and authorized avenue for performing research using Reddit data is through the Reddit For Researchers (RFR) program.” If your project is research, use the RFR program rather than assuming that a screenshot of a public page avoids research-access requirements.
Choosing a screenshot API for Reddit
There is no current authoritative price table across providers established here, so compare providers directly rather than treating an unverified price or performance claim as a fact. For a Reddit workflow, evaluate these factors before committing:
- Rendering fidelity: Does the service render the page in a browser-capable environment and allow enough time for client-side content to appear?
- Authentication handling: Can it handle the access context your permitted workflow requires, and does that handling align with the service’s terms and Reddit’s policies?
- Capture controls: Can you choose viewport size or full-page capture, set waits, and select a suitable output format?
- Operational fit: What are the latency, rate limits, regional availability, retention practices, and price for your expected usage? Confirm each with the provider; the available evidence does not establish comparable current values.
- Failure visibility: Can you distinguish a successful rendered capture from an access check, blank page, timeout, or other failed result, and understand whether that result is billed?
Troubleshooting common capture failures
The image is blank or misses the post
Check that you passed the post permalink, not an unrelated media or outbound link. If the page depends on client-side rendering, use a browser-capable screenshot API and configure a wait for the relevant content rather than capturing immediately. Check the response’s status or page-verdict information if the service provides it.

The post text is too small or clipped
Try a wider desktop viewport for a text-heavy post and inspect whether the capture is full-page or limited to the visible viewport. If you need a mobile-sized image, make that choice explicitly; it may trade legibility for a closer match to a phone layout.

Use a viewport capture when only the visible post is needed, or capture the full page only when the complete thread is necessary. Long captures create larger files and may be less practical to share or upload. For Devvit uploads, keep the image below the documented 20 MB maximum and allow for the 30-second timeout.
The Devvit upload fails
Confirm the image is PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF, and that it is under 20 MB. A slower network can cause a large upload to exceed the 30-second timeout; reduce the image size or capture less content, then retry. Keep the returned CDN URL only after the upload call succeeds.

A capture job is denied or stops working
Do not treat the permalink’s public visibility as authorization. Review the applicable OAuth setup, rate limits, Reddit terms, and policies for your use case and region. If you are conducting research, follow Reddit Help’s stated RFR route.
