For documentation, keep Python code readers may need to copy or run as text; use a screenshot when the editor’s appearance, a specific UI state, or spatial context adds information. When an image helps, frame only the relevant code or interface, make it readable, and place an equivalent text version nearby.

When a Python code screenshot helps—and when it does not

A code screenshot is useful when readers need to recognize a visual editor state, understand where a control or panel is, or see how code appears in its working context. The Visual Studio Code style guide describes screenshots as a way to help users understand information and break up text. That is a reason to use an image selectively, not a reason to turn every code example into one.

If the purpose is to teach syntax, show a command, or provide output a reader must inspect, search, copy, or run, use a text code block. GitHub Docs specifically advises against screenshots for procedural steps that text explains clearly and for displaying commands or outputs. A screenshot of code is also not a reliable substitute for the code itself: it can be hard to copy, search, resize, or interpret with assistive technology.

  • Use text alone for runnable Python examples, commands, output, and steps that can be explained clearly in prose.
  • Add a screenshot when it clarifies a visible editor feature, layout, selection, or other visual detail that prose and code do not communicate as well.
  • Use both when readers need to understand an editor view and reuse the code shown in it.

Prepare a clean editor view

Before capturing, open the file or selection that supports the point you are explaining. Adjust the editor so the relevant content is easy to see, then remove distractions. The goal is not to imitate a particular theme or setup; it is to make the important information obvious without implying that incidental parts of your workspace are required.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
  1. Open the Python file and navigate to the lines or interface feature the documentation discusses.
  2. Set editor zoom and contrast so the code is legible at the size readers will encounter it. Visual Studio Code documents zoom and high-contrast options as accessibility features.
  3. Close unrelated panels and hide distractions such as irrelevant selections, breakpoints, diagnostics, or unsaved-state indicators unless one is part of the explanation.
  4. Check that the visible code and UI labels are current, complete, and consistent with the instructions around the image.

There is no universally correct theme, zoom level, or crop size. The VS Code style guide’s specific editor setup recommendations are house style for that documentation, not a rule every publisher must follow. Choose a consistent presentation for your own docs and verify that it remains readable in the published page.

Frame and capture the screenshot

Crop around the code or UI element being explained. Leave enough editor context to orient the reader, but avoid including unrelated tabs, panels, desktop chrome, or empty space. Do not crop so tightly that a line of code, a control, or a label needed to understand the point disappears. A screenshot should support a nearby explanation, not force the reader to guess what matters.

You can capture the actual editor window or use a code-to-image tool, depending on what the image needs to show. A desktop capture preserves the real editor and its surrounding context. A code renderer can instead put selected lines into a designed frame with more control over the presentation. The Visual Studio Marketplace listing for the VS Code extension Code Screenshot describes selecting code, opening a panel, adjusting appearance, and exporting formats including PNG, SVG, and GIF. Its listing says SVG keeps code as real text; treat that as the vendor’s description, not an independently verified guarantee, and check the current listing for supported features and formats.

For a native editor screenshot, use your operating system’s screen-capture function and crop the resulting image in an editor. For a code-to-image workflow, follow the extension’s current instructions: select the relevant code, open its capture panel, set the appearance, and export. Check the result at its final display size before publishing. The exact controls and export behavior can change as an extension is updated.

Keep the code usable and accessible

Put the code in the documentation as text whenever a reader might copy, run, search, or navigate it with assistive technology. The image and text should agree; update both when the example changes. Avoid putting essential instructions only inside the screenshot.

Visual Studio Code documents zoom, high contrast, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader support for working in the editor. Those features help authors prepare content, but they do not make a screenshot equivalent to accessible, copyable code. GitHub Docs also provides guidance on screenshot accessibility. As an editorial practice, provide useful alternative text that explains what the image contributes, and keep the underlying code available in text nearby.

  • For an image whose purpose is simply to show a code example, use a brief alt description and include the actual code in a text block.
  • For a UI walkthrough, describe the relevant visible state or control rather than transcribing every line of code into alt text.
  • Do not use color alone to communicate meaning; explain any highlighted line or state in the surrounding text.
  • Test the image in the published layout, including at narrow widths, so text does not become too small to read.

Native editor capture vs. a code-to-image export

Consideration Native editor capture Code-to-image export
What it shows The real editor and its visible context; useful when that context is part of the instruction. Selected code in a designed frame; useful when the presentation itself is the focus.
Presentation control Use the editor’s own appearance and crop the capture afterward. The Code Screenshot marketplace listing describes theme, background, frame, spacing, and line-highlighting options; verify current availability in the listing.
Formats Depends on your screen-capture and image-editing workflow. The Code Screenshot listing describes PNG, SVG, and GIF export, and says SVG preserves code as text. Check the current listing for exact support.
Copyability Text in the screenshot is not a substitute for a code block. Even if an export format is described as retaining text, provide the code in the documentation for reliable reuse and accessibility.

If the documentation image is a website view rather than a Python editor, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. For a web page, one GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a code-image renderer, so use an editor capture or code-to-image workflow for Python syntax itself.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Common problems and fixes

The code is too small in the published image

Increase editor zoom before capture, tighten the crop to remove unused space, or split a long example across multiple images. Check the image at its actual page size rather than judging only from the original file.

The screenshot contains distracting or confusing editor details

Close unrelated panels and remove selections, breakpoints, diagnostics, or unsaved-state indicators that do not support the explanation. If a diagnostic or selection is important, explain its role in adjacent text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Readers cannot copy or run the code

Add a text code block next to the screenshot and ensure the two versions match. Do not rely on OCR or on a particular image format to deliver runnable code.

The crop hides context or cuts off a necessary detail

Reframe the image to include the relevant line, label, and enough of the editor to orient the reader. If the screenshot needs too much context to remain legible, use a second image or explain the surrounding workflow in text.

An extension’s controls or output differ from instructions

Consult the current Visual Studio Marketplace listing and the extension’s own interface. Feature descriptions and export behavior are vendor-provided and may change; do not assume a past workflow or format remains available.

FAQ

Should I use a screenshot for a Python traceback?

Usually not if readers need to inspect or copy the traceback. Put it in a text block; add an image only when the surrounding application state is important to the explanation.

Is SVG automatically accessible because it can contain text?

No. The Code Screenshot listing describes its SVG export as keeping code as real text, but the documentation should still include a dependable text version and suitable context.
