To capture more than the primary display with Java’s Robot, calculate the virtual desktop bounds by unioning the bounds of every screen’s GraphicsConfiguration, then pass that rectangle to createScreenCapture. This also includes monitors positioned left or above the primary display, where screen coordinates can be negative.
Capture the whole virtual desktop
Robot captures the screen rectangle you give it; constructing a default Robot does not by itself mean “capture every monitor.” Build the rectangle from the actual graphics configurations instead of assuming the desktop starts at (0, 0). Oracle documents this union-of-bounds approach as the way to determine the virtual device bounds.
The following complete example checks for a headless environment, unions all configuration bounds, captures that rectangle, and writes a PNG. Pass an output path as the first command-line argument, or it writes desktop.png in the current working directory.
import java.awt.AWTException;
import java.awt.GraphicsConfiguration;
import java.awt.GraphicsDevice;
import java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment;
import java.awt.Rectangle;
import java.awt.Robot;
import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;
import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
public class CaptureDesktop {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException, AWTException {
GraphicsEnvironment ge = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment();
if (ge.isHeadless()) {
throw new IllegalStateException("Screen capture requires a graphical desktop");
}
Rectangle virtualBounds = new Rectangle();
for (GraphicsDevice device : ge.getScreenDevices()) {
for (GraphicsConfiguration config : device.getConfigurations()) {
virtualBounds = virtualBounds.union(config.getBounds());
}
}
if (virtualBounds.width <= 0 || virtualBounds.height <= 0) {
throw new IllegalStateException("No usable screen bounds were found");
}
Robot robot = new Robot();
BufferedImage image = robot.createScreenCapture(virtualBounds);
File output = new File(args.length > 0 ? args[0] : "desktop.png");
if (!ImageIO.write(image, "png", output)) {
throw new IOException("No PNG writer is available");
}
System.out.printf("Saved %s (%d x %d)%n", output.getAbsolutePath(),
image.getWidth(), image.getHeight());
}
}
Compile and run it in a graphical desktop session:
javac CaptureDesktop.java
java CaptureDesktop desktop.png
The output image is the rectangular union, not a collage. If monitors are arranged with gaps or nonrectangular geometry, those gaps remain part of the bounding rectangle. The capture API operates on screen coordinates, so monitor positions and the rectangle dimensions determine what is requested.

Why a monitor beyond the primary screen gets missed
A monitor to the left of the primary display may have a negative X coordinate; one above it may have a negative Y coordinate. A rectangle fixed at (0, 0) cannot represent those areas. The union operation preserves the minimum and maximum extents across configurations, producing the rectangle needed for the complete desktop.
Do not assume all platforms arrange displays in the same coordinate model. Oracle notes that screens may share a coordinate system to form a combined virtual screen, or use separate coordinate systems as independent screens. Inspect GraphicsConfiguration.getBounds() at runtime on the target system.
Capture one particular display
When the task is limited to one monitor, select its GraphicsDevice, use the matching bounds, and construct a device-specific Robot. This avoids capturing the other displays.

GraphicsEnvironment ge = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment();
GraphicsDevice device = ge.getScreenDevices()[0]; // choose the desired device
GraphicsConfiguration config = device.getDefaultConfiguration();
Rectangle bounds = config.getBounds();
Robot robot = new Robot(device);
BufferedImage image = robot.createScreenCapture(bounds);
ImageIO.write(image, "png", new File("monitor.png"));
The array index is only an example: do not assume device zero is the display you want. Enumerate devices and print each device’s ID string and configuration bounds, then select according to the environment or user choice. If a device has multiple configurations, inspect them and use the configuration whose bounds describe the target area.
Handle HiDPI scaling and native-resolution output
On scaled displays, logical user-space dimensions and native device-pixel dimensions may differ. Java provides createMultiResolutionScreenCapture(Rectangle) for this case. It returns a MultiResolutionImage with a base user-size image and, where available, a device-resolution variant. Select the native-size variant when retaining device-pixel detail matters.
import java.awt.Image;
import java.awt.image.MultiResolutionImage;
MultiResolutionImage capture = robot.createMultiResolutionScreenCapture(bounds);
for (Image variant : capture.getResolutionVariants()) {
System.out.printf("Variant: %d x %d%n", variant.getWidth(null), variant.getHeight(null));
}
Image nativeOrLargest = capture.getResolutionVariants().stream()
.max(java.util.Comparator.comparingLong(
image -> (long) image.getWidth(null) * image.getHeight(null)))
.orElseThrow();
The largest returned variant is a practical selection when the goal is maximum available pixel detail, but inspect the variants rather than assuming a particular count or scale factor. An ordinary non-scaled display may yield only one variant. Convert the chosen Image to a BufferedImage if you need to save it through ImageIO.

Coordinate, permission, and threading limits
- Headless execution:
Robot()andRobot(GraphicsDevice)throwAWTExceptionif the graphics environment is headless or the platform cannot provide low-level input control. A server process without a graphical desktop cannot capture a desktop that does not exist. - Screen-reading permission:
createScreenCapturemay throwSecurityExceptionif permission is denied. Some modern desktop environments require explicit screen-recording approval; grant it to the Java runtime or application and restart if the environment requires that. - Cursor: Robot’s screen-capture image does not include the mouse pointer, as Oracle’s API documentation specifies. If the cursor must appear, this API alone does not satisfy that requirement.
- Event dispatch thread: Avoid lengthy capture, image conversion, or file writing on Swing’s AWT event-dispatch thread. Run work in a background task so the UI remains responsive.
- Invalid geometry: A zero or negative width or height is not a valid capture rectangle. Validate the computed bounds and handle
IllegalArgumentException.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom or exception | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Only the primary screen appears | The capture rectangle was hard-coded from (0, 0) or sized for one display. |
Enumerate every device configuration and union all bounds. Print the rectangle’s x, y, width, and height before capture. |
| Left or upper monitor is clipped | The code discarded negative screen coordinates. | Use the full union rectangle, including its negative x or y origin; do not reset the origin to zero. |
AWTException during Robot construction |
The environment is headless or does not support the required low-level desktop control. | Check GraphicsEnvironment.isHeadless() and run the program inside a supported graphical desktop session. |
SecurityException while capturing |
Desktop screen-reading permission is denied. | Review the operating system’s screen-recording/privacy permission for the Java runtime or application. |
IllegalArgumentException for the rectangle |
The rectangle has zero or negative dimensions or otherwise invalid geometry. | Verify that devices/configurations were found and that the union has positive width and height. |
| Image lacks expected detail on a scaled display | The selected image is the user-size variant rather than a native-resolution variant. | Use createMultiResolutionScreenCapture, inspect getResolutionVariants(), and select the desired resolution. |
| No mouse pointer in PNG | Robot capture excludes the cursor. | Do not treat this as a failed capture; use a different capture approach if cursor inclusion is essential. |
| Output file absent or not PNG | Write failed, the path is unexpected, or no writer accepted the format. | Use an explicit output path, check write permissions, and test the boolean result from ImageIO.write. |
Reliability and practical deployment
Screen capture is a snapshot of a live desktop, not a reliable substitute for rendering a web page on a server. The machine must have an active graphical environment, usable screen bounds, and any required user-granted permissions. For scheduled or automated desktop jobs, log the detected device bounds and the final captured image dimensions; that makes layout changes and empty captures easier to diagnose.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a multi-monitor desktop, the resulting image can be large because it spans the entire union rectangle, including any empty space between displays. If the task only needs one window or one display, capture the smallest relevant rectangle to reduce memory use and output size. Do not perform capture and file I/O on a UI thread.
