The cleanest official way to create a high-resolution Google Maps image without browser chrome or the consumer Maps interface is the Google Maps Static API. It returns a map image from an HTTPS request, so you control the center, zoom, map type, dimensions, markers and paths instead of photographing a browser window. At the documented standard maximum, request size=640x640&scale=2 to receive a 1280×1280-pixel image covering the same geographic area.
If you need a live, pannable map rather than a still image, build it with the Maps JavaScript API and set disableDefaultUI: true. That removes the API’s default control buttons, but it does not disable mouse gestures or keyboard shortcuts. Capturing the ordinary Google Maps website is a different problem: its search panel and controls are part of a changing consumer interface, and no stable, documented switch is established here for removing them.
Decide what “without UI” means
People use this phrase for three different outputs:
- A still image with no browser chrome: use the Static Maps API. The response is an image file, not a screenshot of a tab.
- A custom interactive map without default buttons: use the Maps JavaScript API and configure its controls.
- A picture of the consumer Google Maps website with panels hidden: use a normal browser only if you accept that the interface and any available hide options can change. This article does not present an undocumented shortcut as reliable.
Choose the first option when you need a report graphic, thumbnail, print asset or automated map export. Choose the second when users must pan, zoom or interact with your own application.

Option 1: Generate a high-resolution still with Maps Static API
Prerequisites
- A Google Cloud project with the Maps Static API enabled.
- An API key restricted according to your deployment needs.
- Billing enabled on the Google Maps Platform account. The API requires both authentication and billing setup.
- An HTTPS request. Google’s Static Maps guidance recommends HTTPS when a request uses an API key or user data.
Build the request
A Static Maps request specifies a location and rendering options in the URL. The essential parameters are:
| Parameter | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
center |
Address, place name or latitude/longitude at the image center. | center=40.7484,-73.9857 |
zoom |
Integer zoom level. Higher values show a smaller geographic area; available detail varies by place and map type. | zoom=15 |
size |
Requested image dimensions, up to the documented standard 640×640 request pixels. | size=640x640 |
scale |
Pixel density multiplier. 2 doubles each output dimension without changing geographic coverage. |
scale=2 |
maptype |
Basemap style. | roadmap, satellite, hybrid or terrain |
markers |
Adds one or more location markers. | markers=color:red|40.7484,-73.9857 |
path |
Draws a line or route through coordinates. | path=color:0x0000ff|40.74,-73.99|40.75,-73.98 |
key |
Your Google Maps Platform API key. | key=YOUR_API_KEY |
For the largest ordinary output, use size=640x640&scale=2. The request covers the area selected by the 640×640 map, while the returned file is 1280×1280 pixels. Google notes that larger images may be possible through support, potentially up to 2048×2048; do not assume that size is generally available or enabled for every project.
Example request
https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=40.7484,-73.9857&zoom=15&size=640x640&scale=2&maptype=roadmap&markers=color:red%7C40.7484,-73.9857&key=YOUR_API_KEY
Open the URL over HTTPS from a permitted environment or download it with your HTTP client. URL-encode addresses, marker labels and path data. Keep the key out of public source code when your architecture allows it, and apply API-key restrictions in Google Cloud.

Choose framing and map detail
- Start with a latitude/longitude center for repeatable output. A street address is convenient but can resolve differently if geocoding changes.
- Set an integer
zoomthat shows the needed context. Zoom level does not guarantee identical building or street detail everywhere; data availability differs by location and map type. - Select
roadmapfor labels and roads, satellitefor aerial imagery, hybridfor imagery with labels, orterrainfor physical relief. - Add markers or paths only when they clarify the image. Multiple markers and long paths make labels harder to read at the same scale.
- Use
scale=2for a denser pixel output. It improves pixel dimensions for export or display, but it does not reveal geographic detail that was not rendered at the selected zoom.
Printing and enlarging
A 1280×1280 image is suitable for many digital documents and moderate-size prints. Enlarging it in an editor creates more output pixels but does not create new map-source detail. If a publication requires a larger physical image, first request the highest documented size, then assess whether the geographic coverage is still appropriate; do not claim that interpolation makes the map higher resolution.
Option 2: Remove controls from a custom interactive map
When your product owns the map page, initialize the Maps JavaScript API with disableDefaultUI: true in MapOptions:
const map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map"), {
center: { lat: 40.7484, lng: -73.9857 },
zoom: 15,
mapTypeId: "roadmap",
disableDefaultUI: true
});
This setting hides the API’s default control buttons. It does not turn off dragging, scroll-wheel zooming, double-click zoom, or keyboard shortcuts. Configure those behaviors separately when your user experience or capture workflow requires a non-interactive map. It also does not automatically remove your own overlays, custom controls, browser chrome or every element layered over the map.

For a still image from this custom map, prefer the Static Maps API when its rendering options meet your needs. A browser screenshot records only what was rendered in the viewport; it cannot add detail beyond that rendering.

Keep Google Maps attribution visible and legible in Maps Platform API applications. Do not remove, alter, hide or obscure included attribution. Attribution requirements depend on the specific Maps Platform content and use; the guidance here is not a complete legal determination for every consumer-site screenshot, editorial reuse or commercial publication. If you capture the ordinary Google Maps website manually, review the terms and permissions that apply to your context before redistributing the image.

The API returns an error or a blank image
- Check the key and API enablement: confirm the Maps Static API is enabled in the same Google Cloud project that owns the key.
- Check billing: an unlinked or inactive billing account can prevent image delivery even when the URL is syntactically correct.
- Inspect restrictions: HTTP referrer restrictions suit browser calls; server-side jobs generally need compatible IP or application restrictions. A restriction that does not match the request origin can look like an invalid-key failure.
- Validate encoding: encode spaces, pipes and special characters in addresses, marker labels and paths. Print the final URL your client sends.
- Use HTTPS: mixed-content blocking or policy restrictions can stop an HTTP request from an HTTPS page.
The image is sharp but shows too little area
Reduce the zoom level or move the center. scale=2 increases pixels, not geographic coverage. If you need both broad coverage and readable labels, create several adjacent images rather than shrinking one map until labels become illegible.

The map looks different from the consumer website
The Static API and Maps JavaScript API are developer products with their own rendering, parameters and attribution. They are not a promise to reproduce every layer, panel or visual treatment of the consumer Google Maps site.
Controls remain on a JavaScript map
Ensure disableDefaultUI is inside the map options object used during construction. Remove or style controls that your own code adds, and configure gesture or keyboard settings separately; disabling the default UI does not disable those inputs.
A browser capture includes a cookie banner or chat bubble
Those elements are part of the rendered page. Hide them with your own CSS or JavaScript only when you control the page and have permission to modify it. For automated captures of permitted URLs, ScreenshotNeo can accept consent banners and remove known popups and chat widgets before taking the shot.
Choosing the right method
| Need | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One clean, repeatable still image | Maps Static API | Requires a Google key and billing; standard request is limited to 640×640 before scaling. |
| 1280×1280 output at unchanged coverage | Static API with size=640x640&scale=2 |
More pixels do not add geographic detail. |
| Pan, zoom and custom application behavior | Maps JavaScript API with disableDefaultUI: true |
You must manage gestures, keyboard behavior and your own overlays. |
| Screenshot of a permitted web page, with automated cleanup | ScreenshotNeo | It captures rendered pages; it does not replace Google’s map-data licensing or attribution rules. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a larger-than-1280-pixel Google map from the Static API automatically?
The documented standard maximum is a 640×640 request with scale 2, producing 1280×1280 pixels. Google advises contacting Maps Platform support about larger images, potentially up to 2048×2048; availability is not guaranteed.
Does disabling the JavaScript API UI hide the browser address bar and tabs?
No. disableDefaultUI: true applies to the map’s default control buttons only. Browser chrome and controls created by your own page remain.
Will a higher zoom always show more building detail?
No. Detail varies by location and map type. Zoom changes the scale of the map, but source coverage is not identical everywhere.
