For a single image, open the required Google Maps view and use your operating system’s region or full-screen screenshot tool, keeping Google’s logo and attribution visible. For repeatable, automated images, use Google Maps Platform’s Maps Static API, which returns a PNG, JPEG or GIF from an HTTP request. My Maps, Google Earth or Earth Studio are better when annotations or designed graphics matter.
Choose the right capture method
| Need | Best method | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| One image for a presentation or internal note | Normal screenshot | Fastest; attribution and Google’s usage terms still apply. |
| Repeatable images from code | Maps Static API | HTTP-generated GIF, PNG or JPEG with controlled size, zoom, markers and styling. |
| Lines, shapes or custom labels | Google My Maps | Build an annotated map, then follow the product’s export and attribution rules. |
| Presentation-quality geographic artwork | Google Earth or Earth Studio | Useful when the goal is a designed graphic or animation rather than a plain map view. |
Take a clean one-off screenshot
- Set the view. Open Google Maps, search for the place or area, choose the map, satellite or other available layer, and adjust zoom and position.
- Reduce distractions. Close unrelated tabs, collapse side panels where possible, and use the browser’s full-screen mode if it does not hide required attribution. Do not use developer tools or undocumented endpoints to remove Google branding.
- Capture the region. Use your operating system’s built-in region capture or full-screen shortcut. Select only the map area needed, but leave the Google logo, copyright text and other attribution visible.
- Check the result. Confirm that labels are legible, the location is correct and attribution has not been cropped. Save the image in the format your document or presentation requires.
Google’s Geo Guidelines expressly describe capturing a screenshot from Google Maps as an option for adding custom labels or graphics. That permission does not remove the requirement to follow Google’s attribution, branding and additional-terms rules, and it does not turn a screenshot into a license to redistribute map data.
Platform shortcuts
- Windows: use Snipping Tool’s rectangular capture for a selected region, or the full-screen capture shortcut when the entire map is needed.
- macOS: use the screenshot toolbar’s selected-area or full-screen option.
- ChromeOS: use the built-in screen-capture control and choose a region or full screen.
Names and shortcuts can vary by operating-system version. The important result is a normal rendered screenshot with attribution intact.

Google describes the Maps Static API as returning “an image (either GIF, PNG or JPEG) in response to an HTTP request.” Instead of rendering an interactive map in a browser, your application sends URL parameters that define the location, dimensions, zoom, map type, markers, paths and optional styling.
#1 Best Overall
Prerequisites
- A Google Cloud project with the Maps Static API enabled.
- An API key restricted according to Google’s security guidance.
- Billing enabled on that project. The setup guide requires both a key and billing.
- A plan for serving the image directly to the end user rather than treating the generated file as a permanent copy in your own image library.
Request design
Build the request from the parameters documented by Google: a center or location, image size, zoom level, map type, and optional markers, paths and style rules. Put the resulting request in an HTML <img> element or request it from your application. Keep the key out of publicly readable source when your architecture allows; if a browser request is necessary, apply referrer restrictions and Google’s recommended key controls.
Example HTML integration
After creating a properly authorized Static API request in Google Cloud, use its complete URL as the image source:
<img src="YOUR_MAPS_STATIC_API_REQUEST" alt="Map of the selected area">
Replace the placeholder with the URL generated from the official parameter set. Do not invent undocumented parameters, scrape map tiles, or stitch many requests together to create a larger map than the documentation permits.
When My Maps, Earth or Earth Studio is better
If the map itself is only a background for an explanation, My Maps can be more efficient than editing a screenshot. Google specifically notes that My Maps lets you draw lines and shapes on a Google map. Use it to mark routes, boundaries or points of interest, then publish or export only in ways allowed by the product’s terms and attribution requirements.

Google’s brand guidance also identifies exporting an image from Google Earth or Earth Studio, or capturing a Google Maps screenshot, as options for adding custom labels or graphics. Choose Earth when you need a globe or terrain-oriented composition; choose Earth Studio when you need controlled camera movement or an animation. Verify the applicable attribution before publishing.
Attribution, storage and policy limits
Keep attribution visible
Google Maps JavaScript results displayed without a map require the Google logo and proper attribution. More generally, a screenshot or generated image should retain the branding and copyright notices shown with the map. Cropping them out for a cleaner design can create a compliance problem.
Do not re-host Static API copies
Google’s Maps Platform FAQ says: “You may not store and serve copies of images generated using the Maps Static API from your website.” Design pages so the image is served directly through the permitted Google request rather than downloading a generated image once and distributing that file indefinitely.

Avoid unofficial extraction
The Maps API terms prohibit access through undocumented interfaces, server-side modification of map tiles and stitching multiple static images into a map larger than the documented limits. They also restrict exporting or saving map content outside the service unless expressly permitted. A browser screenshot is not a workaround for those restrictions.

Publishing a map in an application
Applications using the Maps JavaScript API need publicly accessible terms of use and a privacy policy incorporating Google’s terms and privacy policy. Google’s current additional terms allow viewing and annotating maps, creating KML files and map layers, and publicly displaying content with proper attribution online, in video and in print, subject to those terms.

ScreenshotNeo can capture the rendered Google Maps URL with one request. Before the capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the outcome with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for options such as full-page capture, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, wait conditions, hidden selectors, custom cookies or headers, geolocation, timezone, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs and bulk capture. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot includes controls or a side panel
Resize the browser, collapse the panel before capture, or use a CSS-selected element and a custom viewport in ScreenshotNeo. A normal screenshot cannot reliably remove controls without editing the image, and editing must not remove attribution.

The map is blank or unfinished
Wait for tiles and labels to finish loading before a manual capture. For automation, wait for a selector, a delay or network idle; investigate bot checks, consent dialogs and failed requests. ScreenshotNeo reports whether the page was cleanly captured and does not bill blank or failed loads.
Static API requests fail
Check that the API is enabled in the correct Cloud project, billing is active, the key is valid and restrictions permit the request. Confirm required location and size parameters, then review the response for a malformed request or quota error.

- Use a manual screenshot when this is a single, human-reviewed image.
- Use Maps Static API when software must generate predictable images repeatedly.
- Use My Maps, Earth or Earth Studio when annotation, export or presentation design is central.
- Keep Google attribution visible and follow the terms for the API or product you use.
- Never rely on undocumented tile access, unauthorized stitching or permanent re-hosting of Static API images.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove the Google logo from a map screenshot?
No. Keep the logo, copyright notices and other required attribution visible; a cleaner crop is not a license to remove branding.

Can I save a Maps Static API image on my server?
Google’s FAQ says you may not store and serve copies of generated Static API images from your website.
Is a screenshot the same as a downloadable map dataset?
No. It is a rendered image. It does not grant permission to extract, redistribute or repurpose the underlying map data.
Which option works without JavaScript?
Maps Static API is designed for an HTTP image request, so a page can display the returned image without running Maps JavaScript.
