For a one-off capture, Chrome DevTools can save the entire page without installing anything. Open Device Mode, choose Capture a full size screenshot, and Chrome includes content below the visible viewport. A full-page extension is more convenient for repeated captures or when you need annotation, redaction, or PDF export, but review its current Chrome Web Store permissions and privacy details first.
Use Chrome DevTools first
Chrome documents this workflow in Device Mode and says the full-size command captures content outside the visible viewport. The current menu labels are documented at Chrome DevTools: Device Mode.
- Open the page you want to capture in Chrome.
- Open DevTools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux, or Cmd+Option+I on macOS.
- Turn on Device Mode by clicking the phone-and-tablet icon in the DevTools toolbar, if it is not already enabled.
- Open the DevTools More options menu (the three-dot button).
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves an image containing the page from the top of the viewport to the bottom.
The Command Menu is another way to find screenshot commands: press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+P on Mac, then type “screenshot.” Google’s Command Menu documentation specifically covers area capture; use the Device Mode menu for the full-size-page command (Command Menu documentation).
If the result is not the whole page
- Confirm Device Mode is enabled and select Capture a full size screenshot, not an area or viewport command.
- Wait for visible content and images to finish loading before capturing. Pages that load content only after scrolling can still behave differently from a simple static page.
- For a very long page, check the saved image dimensions and file size before sharing; an image can be unwieldy even when the capture is complete.
Chrome introduced this capability in its Chrome 59 DevTools release notes, last updated April 12, 2017. That release note is historical context, not a statement about the current Chrome version: “Take a screenshot of the entire page, from the top of the viewport to the bottom.” (Chrome 59 DevTools notes)

When a full-page Chrome extension is the better fit
Install an extension when you capture pages repeatedly or want tools bundled into the capture flow. Current Web Store listings describe different combinations of scrolling capture, annotation, redaction, and image or PDF export. Those descriptions are publisher claims; they are not independent performance tests.
Examples to evaluate
- GoFullPage describes a scroll-and-capture workflow and notes that very long pages may be split into multiple images.
- Full Page Screen Capture is another Web Store listing to compare for its currently stated capture and export options.
- FullPage Capture is a further listing with its own stated feature set and permissions.
The vendor behind Full Page Capture describes capturing articles, dashboards, and bug-report pages and says a custom keyboard shortcut can be assigned in extension settings (vendor overview; how it works). Treat these as vendor descriptions, not guarantees that every extension will handle lazy-loaded content, sticky headers, overlays, or exceptionally long pages perfectly.
Choose between DevTools and an extension
| Need | DevTools | Extension |
|---|---|---|
| One-off full-page image | No installation; use Device Mode’s Capture a full size screenshot. | Extra installation and permissions are unnecessary unless its workflow helps. |
| Frequent captures | Repeat the DevTools steps each time. | Often quicker to launch; compare whether the listing supports a custom shortcut. |
| Annotation or redaction | Not part of the documented full-size command. | Some listings advertise annotation or redaction; verify the current listing. |
| Image or PDF export | The documented command is a screenshot workflow. | Some listings advertise image/PDF export; check format limits and terms. |
| Privacy and permissions | No extension is added to the browser. | Review publisher identity, requested permissions, and current privacy information before installing. |
Review an extension before installing it
- Open the extension’s current Chrome Web Store page rather than relying on an old recommendation.
- Check the publisher identity, permissions, update history, stated data practices, and supported export formats.
- Decide whether the page may contain confidential information. A capture tool that can read page content deserves the same scrutiny as any other browser extension.
- Test the exact page types you care about—long articles, dashboards, lazy-loaded images, and pages with sticky elements—before making it part of a production workflow.
- Remove the extension if you no longer need its access.
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the documented API parameters and options when you need automation rather than an interactive Chrome capture: full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, device presets or custom viewports, dark mode, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs.

Choose DevTools when you need a clean, single full-page image with no additional software. Choose an extension when repeated captures or built-in editing and export save time, after checking its current permissions and privacy information. Choose an automated API when captures must run from code, an agent, or a repeatable pipeline.
