To capture a webpage from top to bottom, open your browser’s developer tools and use its full-page screenshot command—not the ordinary screenshot command, which captures only the visible viewport. In Chrome and Microsoft Edge, open Device Mode’s More options menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot. In Firefox, enable its screenshot toolbar button first, or run :screenshot --fullpage in the Web Console. “Inspect Element” opens developer tools; taking the screenshot is a separate action.

Choose the capture that matches what you need

Browser developer tools can produce different kinds of captures. Pick the scope before you start: a viewport capture is a picture of what is currently on screen, while a full-page capture includes content beyond the visible area. A single-element capture is limited to one selected page element. These are separate actions, not different names for the same command.

Google and Microsoft document the distinction between the two Device Mode commands: Chrome DevTools Device Mode screenshot instructions and Microsoft Edge DevTools Device Mode screenshot instructions. Mozilla’s documentation covers Firefox’s full-page and element options in Taking screenshots — Firefox DevTools.

Capture a full-page screenshot in Chrome

  1. Open the page. Navigate to the webpage you want to save.
  2. Open DevTools. Right-click the page and choose Inspect, or open developer tools using Chrome’s developer-tools shortcut or browser menu. The right-click target does not have to be a specific element.
  3. Enable Device Mode if needed. The full-size screenshot action documented by Google is in the Device Mode toolbar’s More options menu.
  4. Choose the full-page action. Open More options in the Device Mode toolbar, then select Capture a full size screenshot.
  5. Check the saved image. Open the resulting file and inspect the bottom of the page as well as the top. If the image stops around the visible screen, you likely selected Capture screenshot, the viewport-only command, instead.

The essential distinction is the command label. Capture screenshot captures the visible viewport; Capture a full size screenshot is the full-page command. The two options are in the same Device Mode menu according to Google’s instructions. “Inspect” opens the tools; it does not itself capture the page.

Capture a full-page screenshot in Firefox

Firefox offers a dedicated toolbar button, but Mozilla says it is off by default. Enable it once in Developer Tools settings before using that route.

  1. Open Developer Tools. Open the browser’s developer tools, then open their Settings.
  2. Enable the button. Find Available Toolbox Buttons and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  3. Return to the page. Click the screenshot button in the Developer Tools toolbar to capture the current page.
  4. Find the file. Mozilla says this toolbar capture is saved in the browser’s Downloads directory.

For a console-based route, open the Web Console and enter :screenshot --fullpage. Mozilla documents additional controls for delay, device pixel ratio, clipboard, filename, and choosing one element with a CSS selector; consult its screenshot documentation for the exact options. That command’s --fullpage flag is what distinguishes it from a capture of only the visible viewport.

Capture just one Firefox element

If you want one component rather than the entire page, open the Inspector’s HTML pane, open the context menu for the node, and select Screenshot Node. Mozilla documents this as an element screenshot, not a full-page screenshot. To inspect how the element relates to the page, use the Inspector; to capture the whole page, use the full-page button or console command instead.

Use the same full-size route in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the target webpage and Edge DevTools.
  2. Enable Device Mode if it is not already active.
  3. In Device Mode, open More options.
  4. Select Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page.

Edge’s Capture screenshot option is viewport-only; it does not include content outside the visible area. Choose the full-size command when you need the page from top to bottom, as described in Microsoft’s Edge DevTools documentation.

What “Inspect Element” does—and does not do

“Inspect Element” is the common name for opening browser developer tools at a particular page element. In Firefox, for example, right-clicking an element and choosing Inspect Element opens the Inspector. The Inspector lets you examine the page’s HTML; a screenshot command is a separate step. The same distinction applies when you use Inspect to open Chrome DevTools: opening the tools is not the same as asking them to capture an image. See Mozilla’s instructions for opening the Inspector.

For a full-page image, select the browser’s full-page or full-size action explicitly. For an image of one component, use an element-specific screenshot action where the browser documents one. If you simply need to show what was visible at a particular moment, the viewport command is the appropriate, smaller-scope choice.

Why a capture may show only part of the page

  • The image ends at the screen boundary. The most likely cause is choosing the viewport command, Capture screenshot, rather than Capture a full size screenshot. This follows from the documented difference between those commands in Chrome and Edge. Repeat the capture with the full-size option.
  • The Firefox screenshot button is missing. It is disabled by default according to Mozilla. In Developer Tools settings, enable it under Available Toolbox Buttons.
  • You got an element image rather than a page image. Firefox’s Screenshot Node action captures the selected element. Use the full-page button or :screenshot --fullpage for the entire page.
  • You opened the Inspector but no image was made. Inspecting opens developer tools; it is not the screenshot action. Go to Device Mode’s More options in Chrome or Edge, or use Firefox’s screenshot button or Web Console command.
  • The file is hard to find. For Firefox’s toolbar capture, Mozilla identifies the browser’s Downloads directory as the save location. The Chrome and Edge instructions cited here specify the capture command but do not establish a universal save location, so check the browser’s download or save behavior rather than assuming the Firefox path applies.

When browser DevTools are the right method

Built-in developer tools are a sensible choice when you need an occasional image of a page in the browser you are already using. They require no special hardware or purchase according to the cited browser workflows. Select a viewport screenshot when only the visible screen matters, a full-page capture when the page continues below it, and a node capture when the target is one Firefox element.

If you need repeatable captures in an application, a command-line workflow or a service API may fit better than manually opening DevTools each time. A browser route is still useful for a one-off check; an API call lets a script request a screenshot from a URL. A service can also expose output formats or capture controls that are different from the browser’s documented commands.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request endpoint can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or return a PDF. For a quick test, replace YOUR_API_KEY with an API key and set the target URL.

cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

ScreenshotNeo includes controls such as full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, PDF paper and page settings, HTML/CSS input, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, hide selectors, wait conditions, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI spec. The parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease switching. All features are on every plan.

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing gives two months free. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000.
