Fill out the form in the browser, confirm the values you need are visible, then capture the form element, the current viewport, or the full page. Choose the smallest capture area that preserves the evidence you need, and inspect the saved image before sharing it: screenshots record rendered pixels, not a verified copy of the form’s underlying data.
Choose what the screenshot needs to show
Playwright supports screenshots of a selected element, the current viewport, and the full scrollable page. Those scopes solve different problems, so decide what the image must prove before you capture it. Playwright’s screenshot documentation describes these capture types.

If the image will be used as documentation or evidence, include enough context to identify what the form is without exposing unrelated personal information. A tight crop is easier to review, but a full-page capture may be more useful when the form is long or its instructions matter.
Fill, verify, capture, and review
The dependable workflow is to use the website’s intended form controls, confirm the intended values are visibly present, capture the appropriate scope, and inspect the output. This is practical guidance, not a guarantee that every site renders every kind of form control identically. A custom widget, delayed update, or validation message can affect what appears in the screenshot.

- Open the page and populate the fields. Use the site’s normal workflow. If the form has multiple steps, navigate to the state you need to document.
- Verify the rendered state. Check each relevant field on the page, not just the values you intended to enter. Wait for updates, validation, autocomplete, or other dynamic content to settle.
- Select the capture scope. Target the form alone, the visible viewport, or the full scrollable page according to the context required.
- Save and inspect the image. Look for missing values, clipped controls, obscuring overlays, and unnecessary sensitive information before using or sharing it.
For a repeatable capture with Playwright
Playwright is useful when you need to repeat the same browser workflow rather than capture the page manually. The following Node.js example opens a page, fills two fields using labels, waits for the form to be visible, and saves a screenshot of the form. Replace the example URL and labels with the ones on the site you control or are authorized to use. Playwright’s Page API documentation describes screenshot options, including hiding the text caret.

})();Install Playwright in a Node.js project and install its browser before running the script: npm install playwright, then npx playwright install chromium. Save the example as capture-form.js and run node capture-form.js. The script uses accessible labels; if a field has no label, use a stable locator appropriate to that page, such as a role and name or a site-specific selector. Avoid relying on a fragile position-based selector when the page structure may change.
Capture the viewport or whole page instead
Keep the same navigation and field-filling steps, then replace the element screenshot line with one of these alternatives. A viewport screenshot is the default page screenshot; fullPage requests the whole page:

A full-page screenshot is not a substitute for checking the saved output: a page can change while being captured, and custom form components may not behave like ordinary text inputs.
Manual and browser-protocol alternatives
If you do not need repeatable automation, you can fill the form and use your operating system’s screenshot controls, then crop the result if needed. This is quick for a one-off image, but it depends on the page being in the desired state and the capture area being framed correctly.
Chrome also documents getDisplayMedia() for letting a user select a screen or a portion of a screen to capture as a media stream. That is a screen-sharing capture feature, not the same thing as a browser automation API that saves a page screenshot. See Chrome for Developers’ screen-sharing controls documentation. For automated page capture, the Chrome DevTools Protocol documents a page screenshot command in its Page domain.

Protect form data before sharing an image
A screenshot can expose everything rendered inside the capture area, including names, email addresses, account identifiers, addresses, or other values. Decide what is safe to disclose before making the image. If a field should not appear in the shared copy, use a non-sensitive test value or make a separate redacted copy and verify the redaction covers the value completely. Do not assume the screenshot tool has removed a field just because the text caret is hidden.
Playwright documents a screenshot option to hide the text caret, but that is a visual caret setting, not evidence that field contents are redacted. See the Page API documentation. A caret-hiding option does not erase entered text. Keep an unredacted image only where it is appropriate, and share the minimum information needed for the task.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
- The image shows an empty field. The field may not have been filled, may be a custom control, or may have updated after the capture. Verify the visible state immediately before capture; for automation, confirm the locator targets the actual input and wait for the expected value or state.
- The screenshot misses the form or captures the wrong element. Check that the selected locator matches the intended form and that it is visible. If the page has multiple forms, use a more specific locator instead of the first generic match.
- Part of the page is absent. A viewport capture includes only what is visible in that viewport. Use a full-page capture for below-the-fold content, or capture the form element directly when it is the only required evidence.
- The result includes a banner or popup. Close or handle the overlay through the site’s normal workflow if appropriate, then verify the page is unobstructed before capture. An overlay may block fields or cover context.
- The script cannot find a field by label. The page may not expose an accessible label, or the label text may differ. Inspect the page’s actual controls and choose a stable locator; do not guess a selector and assume it identifies the intended field.
- The saved image is stale or incomplete. Dynamic pages may update after navigation. Wait for the relevant form or content to appear and settle, then capture and inspect the file rather than relying only on a successful script exit.
- The screenshot still contains sensitive data. Hiding the caret does not redact values. Re-capture with safe test data or create and verify a redacted sharing copy.

For recurring captures, browser automation makes the steps repeatable, but scripts still depend on the page’s current controls, network behavior, and layout. Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot prove that a form was submitted?
No. It shows a rendered page state. A confirmation screen may document what appeared after submission, but the image alone does not establish that a backend accepted or stored the submission.
