To capture a screenshot of a running Flutter app with MCP, configure an MCP-compatible client to run the official dart mcp-server, enable Flutter Driver in your app, and launch the app in debug mode with --dart-define=ENABLE_FLUTTER_DRIVER=true. Then ask your assistant to connect to the running app and take the screenshot. The official workflow supports mobile and desktop targets; Flutter web needs a browser-driving MCP instead.

What the Flutter MCP screenshot workflow does

The official Dart and Flutter MCP server connects an AI assistant to Dart and Flutter tooling over standard input and output (stdio). It is not a standalone screenshot utility: it discovers a running app through Dart Tooling Daemon (DTD), then uses Flutter Driver commands to interact with the app. The same connection can support actions such as tapping, scrolling, entering text, hot reload, and runtime inspection. See Flutter’s Dart and Flutter MCP server guide and its overview of Flutter AI tools.

The documented screenshot-and-interaction path is for a running app with the Flutter Driver extension enabled. For Flutter web, that extension is unsupported, so use a browser-driving MCP for browser screenshots and taps. The official server is experimental; client configuration and available commands can change, so check the current Flutter guide if a setup detail differs in your environment.

Requirements and setup

  • Dart 3.9 or later. Flutter’s setup guide states this requirement for the documented server.
  • An MCP client that supports stdio. Flutter says full features require Tools and Resources support; Roots support improves the development experience.
  • A Flutter app that can run in debug mode on a mobile or desktop target, with the Flutter Driver extension added as shown below.

Install or update the Dart and Flutter SDK using the appropriate method for your platform, then verify the SDK available to your terminal with dart --version. If your client starts the server in a different environment from your terminal, make sure that environment can find the same Dart executable.

Configure an MCP client

Add the server command to the MCP client’s configuration. Flutter’s guide uses dart mcp-server and shows configuration examples in files such as .agents/mcp_config.json and .vscode/mcp.json. The exact wrapper and JSON structure depend on the client, so use its current format and Flutter’s examples rather than assuming every client reads the same file.

{
  "servers": {
    "dart": {
      "command": "dart",
      "args": ["mcp-server"]
    }
  }
}

This illustrates the command and argument; preserve the surrounding schema expected by your client. Save the configuration and restart or reload the MCP client so it starts the server. If the client offers a tool list or connection status, confirm that the Dart server is connected before continuing.

Enable Flutter Driver conditionally

Add the Flutter Driver package from the Flutter SDK to the app:

flutter pub add "flutter_driver:{sdk: flutter}"

In the app entry point, enable the driver extension only when a Dart define requests it:

import 'package:flutter_driver/driver_extension.dart';

void main() {
  if (const bool.fromEnvironment('ENABLE_FLUTTER_DRIVER')) {
    enableFlutterDriverExtension();
  }
  runApp(const MyApp());
}

Keep the conditional in place rather than enabling the extension for every build. This lets the MCP-oriented debug launch opt in, while ordinary launches do not automatically enable the driver extension.

Launch the app and take a screenshot

  1. Find the target device. Run flutter devices and copy the device ID for your emulator, simulator, or connected device.
  2. Launch with the driver define. Replace <device-id> with the ID from the device list:
flutter run -d <device-id> --dart-define=ENABLE_FLUTTER_DRIVER=true
  1. Wait for the app to finish starting. Leave the debug process running; the MCP server needs a live app to discover through DTD.
  2. Ask the assistant to connect and capture. For example: “Connect to my running Flutter app and take a screenshot.” To combine capture with an interaction, ask: “Connect to my running Flutter app, take a screenshot, then tap ‘Sign In’.”

The assistant can also perform supported UI actions before or after a capture. Be explicit about order when the screenshot must show a particular state: ask it to navigate or tap first, then capture. Flutter documents the MCP workflow as capable of taking screenshots, tapping buttons, entering text, scrolling, and hot reloading a running app.

Typing, app state, and screenshot expectations

Keyboard input has a trade-off

Enabling the Flutter Driver extension disables real keyboard input by default. The documented manual-typing option is to pass enableTextEntryEmulation: false when enabling the extension. That changes the interaction trade-off: the agent’s enterText command stops working. Choose the setting based on whether a session needs agent-driven text entry or manual keyboard input; do not expect both behaviors at once.

Capture the state you actually need

A screenshot reflects the running app’s visible state when the capture occurs. For a reproducible result, start from a known app state, perform navigation in a stated order, and wait for the screen content to settle before asking for the capture. If the result looks wrong, separate the task into smaller instructions—connect, navigate, confirm the target screen, capture—rather than asking for several actions in one ambiguous sentence.

The official guide establishes that the assistant can request screenshots and interact with the live app; it does not specify a universal image save location or a particular output-file naming scheme across MCP clients. Check the response and client interface for how your chosen client presents or stores the returned screenshot.

Flutter web requires a browser-driving MCP

Flutter Driver’s extension is not supported on web builds. Consequently, the official find-by-widget screenshot and tap commands described for mobile and desktop are unavailable for Flutter web. Flutter recommends pairing the Dart MCP server with a browser-driving MCP and prefers starting the web app with flutter run -d web-server, so the browser being driven is the one connected to DTD. Follow the current Flutter web instructions for the browser and client-specific connection steps.

Think of this as two cooperating connections: Dart MCP connects the assistant to Flutter tooling and the running app, while the browser-driving MCP operates the actual browser page. If a web app appears in tooling but screenshot or tap commands fail, check that the request is using browser automation for the web page rather than Flutter Driver finder commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to use integration-test screenshots instead

A live MCP session is useful when an assistant needs to inspect or manipulate a running app interactively. If the goal is repeatable screenshot artifacts from automated tests—especially in a test or CI workflow—Flutter’s integration-test API is a separate route and does not require an MCP client.

The integration-test API defines ScreenshotCallback as receiving a screenshot name and the PNG byte buffer produced by takeScreenshot. Use that callback to handle test-generated image bytes in your own test workflow. It is a test-artifact path, not a way for an assistant to drive a live app through the official MCP server. See Flutter’s ScreenshotCallback API documentation.

Other Flutter MCP implementations

The official Dart and Flutter server is the appropriate starting point for the documented workflow because it is Flutter’s own server and connects an assistant to broader Dart and Flutter tools as well as live-app interaction. Community alternatives exist, but their scope and maintenance are different.

  • mcp_toolkit is an unofficial package exposing VM Service extensions for app errors, view details, screenshots, semantic snapshots, and gestures.
  • mcp_flutter is another server whose README lists commands including get_screenshots, capture_ui_snapshot, and hot_reload_and_capture; its documented startup path runs a Flutter app in debug mode before starting the server.

These alternatives are not interchangeable guarantees: verify each project’s current setup and supported behavior before adopting it. If you need the official Flutter tooling connection, use dart mcp-server; if you need a package-specific extension or command set, assess the unofficial project’s documentation and maintenance status directly.

Troubleshooting

  • The client cannot start the server. Confirm Dart 3.9 or later is installed and that the client process can resolve dart. Try dart mcp-server in a terminal to expose a missing SDK or path issue, then correct the client command or environment and restart it.
  • The server connects but does not find the app. Confirm the app is still running under flutter run, was launched in debug mode, and used --dart-define=ENABLE_FLUTTER_DRIVER=true. Check that the driver extension is conditionally enabled in the app entry point, then restart the app with the define.
  • The app is found but screenshot or tap commands fail on web. Flutter Driver does not support web builds. Start the app with flutter run -d web-server and use a browser-driving MCP for browser screenshots and interactions, following Flutter’s current web setup guidance.
  • The agent cannot enter text. Check whether the driver extension is configured with enableTextEntryEmulation: false. That setting enables manual typing but disables the agent’s enterText command; choose the input mode needed for the session.
  • The screenshot shows the wrong screen or an incomplete transition. Ask the assistant to perform navigation first and capture only after the intended state is visible. For repeatable artifacts, use an integration-test screenshot callback instead of relying on a live interactive session.
  • The configured server exposes fewer features than expected. Verify that the client supports MCP Tools and Resources; Flutter notes that full features require them. Roots support improves the development experience but is not described as a universal prerequisite.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot of a website rather than a running Flutter app’s native widget tree, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API returns an image or PDF; it is not a replacement for Flutter Driver’s live-app controls.
